Wow it's amazing how differently the commenters view the game on that site compared to this one... They are all saying "please be  single player game, I won't play if it's an MMO" and "I hope this is on consoles, if it's PC only I'll pass" which is the exact opposite of almost anything you would see here. Odd.

Tried: LotR, CoH, AoC, WAR, Jumpgate Classic
    Played: SWG, Guild Wars, WoW
    Playing: Eve Online, Counter-strike
    Loved: Star Wars Galaxies
Waiting for: Earthrise, Guild Wars 2, anything sandbox.

Well, this is a site of the MMO Community. Naturally you'll see more people inclined towards MMO's here.

The bulk of gamers I know will not touch an mmo because they have a fundamental problem with monthly fees for a game they own.  Also, there is the perception that mmo's take too much time, are addictive, and will ultimately suck up all your free time.

It is a bit shitty that you have to pay for a game you own..now that i think of it..  you buy the game and can only play it for 30 days unless you pay more money at the end of each month..us gamers will swallow anything.

Yeah...because maintaining an extensive server-farm, servicing it, upgrading it, maintaining the staff for that, maintaining the staff to continue development, continue updates, maintain the community boards, staff the servers with GM's and so and and so forth costs a company nothing. Of course, they should offer this for free. *nod sagely*

What's worse is that these MMO game developers are betting on the fact that players will get obsessed or addicted to their games so they will keep paying the monthly fee. I think that's why most gamers prefer non-MMOs.

In the case of SWG, we'd have been better off if after early 2004 or so they'd fired all the Devs and only paid for the servers...

Well, actually all those points are true in my opinion.

But I have tried too many MMOs without monthly fees that failed miserably in the "FUN" department, so I guess the saying "you get what you pay for" applies in this instance.

MMOs don't take that much time, it depends on how much time you decide to invest, some MMOs are addictive, and the one's that we enjoy will suck up free time.

Or they could start making games that are worth the monthly fee instead of skimming the cash they got for development and buying ferrari's .

It's usually cheaper than going to the movies once a month, and far more entertainment for your buck.

It is your decission whether or not you buy the game and pay the monthly fees.

If I were you I would stick with Guildwars,  the free2play games and Diablo I-II, there you won't have monthly fees and you would be much happier.

True, as opposed to the perception that single player or console games are designed for those who enjoy their entertainment dumbed down, need instant gratification, are willing to shell out more money for new games as they fly through the current ones (as opposed to paying that hefty monthly fee), are addictive and will ultimately suck up all of your free time.  ;)

If you feel a game is not worth your money...then why pay for it? If you feel a game is worth paying for, you pay. If you pay for a game you think is not worth paying for....well duh.

That has been EXACTLY what the gaming public have done with each new MMO since the release of WOW, with rare exceptions.  The NGE got dropped like a bad habit by more than half it's players almost immediately after it's release, and most of the other half in the 3 years since.

LOTRO has been a mild success, while everything else have had inital "bubbles" of many players at the launch most of which leave shortly afterwards when they discover that the "new" game is nothing more than the latest half-arsed spin on a WoW clone and go back to WOW.

Fact of the matter is that no MMO that sets out to be a clone of WOW is going to get very far, and I believe the last 3 years has proven that.  Only something new and different is going to catch on.

Actually, the single biggest winner in the industry since 2005 besides WOW has been..  EVE Online, a game that couldn't be FURTHER from WOW in every concept and function if it tried to be.  EVE has grown up to near 300K subs, despite being 5+ years old.  They have more US/EU subs these days than any US/EU based MMO except WOW, and it's easily the most hardcore, complicated (yes, you need to do a lot of reading)  MMO there is, it's even more complex than Pre-CU was.
