I've had a chance to play WotLK's Beta and I will tell you flat-out that WoW's numbers are only going to skyrocket. They have completely revamped their design philosophy and have actually mapped out the way this expansion will go. The new continent is absolutely beautiful and every inch of it screams 'WE'RE SORRY FOR ALL OF THE HIGH FANTASY IN OUTLANDS, PLEASE FORGIVE US!'. Going back to their D2 roots, Blizzard will tell the story of this expansion in 3 acts, culminating with an encounter at Icecrown Citadel against the dread Lich King. This means that we KNOW who the guy we're after is and won't have a surprise appearance by Kil'jaeden sprung on us all of a sudden...Or another famous lore character. It's easily one of the coolest things I've ever seen done with an expansion and I won't be surprised if nothing can stop the Blizzard juggernaut save for Blizzard themselves. One last sidenote; Blizzard has said that they will release a sort of XBox-like Achievement system that will keep track of player achievements across Starcraft II, Diablo III, and WoW...There's encouragement for playing all 3 games right there and I can assure you that people will be playing all 3; not quitting one for the other.
Agreed. The blogger the OP referenced obviously has no idea what is actually in the X-pac that he is proclaiming to be the death of WoW.
Wrath is unbelievably respectful to lore, and advances it as a coherrant story. New tech is used to enhance this entire experience. The PvE game in Wrath is incredible. The PvP game is tweaked and strengthened, with Lake Wintergrasp being the best of it (and the emphassis on Arenas being the worst).
Overall Wrath will bring back tons of old players, if just to see some of teh stories play out in ways that have never been done before.
What's even more crazy is the huge activity on Azeroth in the last few days with the achievement system in place. Talk about LFG for MC, BWL, AQ20/40, ZG, and others. Good times.
WoW won't really decline until after they've released their new MMO, but that won't be for many years. We don't even have a release date on SC2 or D3. I do think if they raise the level cap again with the expansion after WOTLK, they will have to do something to help new players catch up to speed. The new buddy system seems to be a step in the right direction.
I agree with Ruthgar, the only thing to bring WoW down is another Blizzard mmo. Tho, I will play D3 for sure, I'm still waiting for them to make Diablo a mmo. It won't hapen for a long time, but I'm patience.

I really don't know about this. Think about it. If you decide to make your death knight your 'main', then you are going to have to spend a few weeks leveling in outlands... then a few weeks in the new zones and will be behind the majority of other players. You'll be doing lvl 80 dungeons while other are lfg for heroics and Nax.
The PvP side is even more convincing.. you are basically giving up on Lake Wintergrasp and the new season of Arena if you make a DK your main.
I know a lot of beta testers fell into exactly that mode. Most of us rolled a DK and did the first 3 levels in the new starting area... but once you get to hellfire and think about going through all those old zones again while your main is sitting there at 70 all ready for the new areas... it's really hard to trudge through the old content. I think a lot of people who roll a DK won't get out of hellfire before returning to their main

If only purpose of MMORPGs was to usher in new ways in which am indivdual can interact with virtual enviroments, WoW would be dead years ago, since it isn't, people play it to have fun while bashing in some heads either with friends or with strangers.
It's only same as you make it. If you really try hard enough to miss stuff that is new, you can be 100% right, I just don't know why you would do such a thing. Maybe to prove a point?

My point is that I played one week with the patch echoes of doom and I just though, it's the same again, from when I got TBC, except I'm more experienced with the game. WotLK = restart from when TBC came out.

You DO remember when TBC came out right? Fastest selling PC game of all time? People standing in line for 24 hours straight to get a copy? National TV coverage of the event? THAT TBC? Yeah, it'll be the same alright.
WoW died for me when they announced this expansion. Raid grind till you get the top gear so you can start all over again with the new expansion. What bothered me most was knowing that many players will not get to see all of the end game content of the last expansion before the next one comes out. Only the upper guilds will have gotten to see the content, rest would have to wait till they could get the gear in future instances and go back to the older ones. Same happened for Naxx when BC came out.
oh my lootwhore lost... starting again is one of best thing.. i am raider.. or once was.. pre tbc i saw all.. in tbc i saw half.. another half after 3.0.2 which enable content to be seen by everyone who gets 25 ppl
no Answer is that simple, people that like wow will still like it, no other game is as polished and thats good alot of people from other mmos want the wow community to stick with wow. Unfortunatly TOR might bring a few people from wow. still WoW will be a big hit with Wotlk dont u worry little dudes
wow community > war worst gaming community ever , anyday in a year,
I was checking up on a blog that I recently started to follow and saw an article the author posted on the upcoming World of Warcraft expansion. (Wrath of the Lich King) The blog can be found here: rpgfeed.blogspot.com In the blog he brings up a few key points that will pretty much spell the end of WoW for me. For those too lazy to read it, I will summarize.
First he goes on to say that the game has had a lack of quality content as of late, and is pretty much ruining the WoW lore by killing off key figures. He also gives some examples.
He then goes on to explain how the dev team seems to be loosing direction since the new Inscription profession is a re-tooled Enchanting, and gives an example of how they could have come up with a better profession, the example being a pretty damn cool one.
Finally he mentions the fact that a large influx of Death Knights are going to hit the game as soon as the expansion comes out, and pretty much overwhelm the population.
I don't really do his article justice, but those are some of the key points.
What do you guys think? We will be killing Arthas in WotLK. Who else is after that? I agree with him 100% that I will be done with Warcraft after I finally see Arthas die. Oh well, I guess it's for the best. Maybe I can get back to my real life.
Well personally and about 30 other Ex-WoW players wont be coming back for this expansion for one reason and thats because we dont like starting the game over once every 2 years. We dont enjoy having our gear we worked for for a good year and half to be complettly useless in 1 lvl....

I don't grind my butt off in Raids and Arenas so I don't have this problem. Why does everyone who plays WoW feel the only point of the game is to get the best gear/loot. I couldn't care less what gear I have as long as I'm having fun, which I am.

Not that it makes a difference to you, but the gear reset is not huge, Im in T4 gear and lvl 73 in beta and have only replaced a ring, trinket and polearm. And yes ive been running dungeons and group quests.
Others in T5 gear are not replacing gear till the high 70's.
But WoW has always been this way, you increase in lvl you need higher lvl armour, it always been this way.
I'm a WoW "veteran" myself...although burned out for quite sometime now...
The only game I currently know of, that's comming out and could possibly be a WoW-killer is Darkfall; people just need a new dimension in MMO games, the level-based, grinding approach is aged...
I'm sorry, but in no way will Darkfall be a "wow killer".
Not that I'm saying it will be a bad game or anything, but you got to remember what kind of game WoW is, and what kind of game Darkfall is looking to be.
For one, Darkfall is looking a lot like a Niche game. Only a small minority of players will really get it and get into it.
Another problem with Darkfall is it is basically only heard of in the MMO community.
Maybe a few in the general gaming community, but past that, it's "whats Darkfall?".
While I am sure Darkfall will have it's own playerbase, it won't kill wow.
I won't disagree with the facts you state...as things stand right now.
Darkfall appears to have the same game approach WoW has - in terms of low system requirements, user-friendliness, etc-, the main difference being it is set in a FFA PvP, Full Loot environment.
Once the player balance has been established, however, and the majority of the world is relatively peaceful, I think that two key elements will attract new people like a magnet: the FPS approach to combat (everyone's gonna love that), and the huge game world.

All lies WOW FOREVER.
Look at illidian for the first tiem in a month they could raid last night and most thing blizzard is a god to provid them with that 1 day of play time in the last month.
Too bad killing aree peke was funny stuff.

I disagree with this on alot of diffrent levels. Key figures are dieing off but you have to think with the coming of Warcraft 4 (which was announced at blizzcon) alot of new elements will be gatherd from this and brough over to WoW.
Secondly, I rather like inscription. We have gear enchants, what is the problem with getting spell enchants? Just because it seems re-tooled does not make it a bad idea. This opens up more options and actually makes some useless talents now worthwhile.
And finally, I agree with alot of death knight population. But we have to take into consideration that you have to be 55+. Yes 55 is easy to get, but not everybody has the time to play. And while we are on the Dk topic, people are overrating it. Just because there will be a new class does not mean everybody will quit everything else. I plan to play my main aswell as DK. And alot of people I know actually dont plan to play DK. But all this really cant be accurate till nov 13, now can it?

didn't most of the gear you had at level 5 get replaced by level 20?
Didn't most of the gear you had a level 20 get replaced by level 35?
Didn't most of the gear you had at level 35 get replaced by level 50?
Why does it really matter at the end game, be it level 60, 70 or 80 have to be the end of gear progression? Is it because some people feel like fools for going after gear? It is because you want to remain uber? Be honest. Because gear replacement is what people have been doing since they started the game. So this is an issue a given player might have rather than a game problem.
I personnaly think WOTLK will not have an impact on the popularity of wow. I think it will even increase the popularity. Wow is now a huge game with loooooooots of content and looooots of players. I don't think i gonna return to wow, I'm bussy with other games and with RL, so i'll stay away for atleast another 6 months, so i can see what happens
------------------------------------------------------------------- waiting for ... nothing..
I haven't red all the posts but i think WotLK will be just fine. They added tons of new stuff, just what you expect from an expansion. It feels like players sometimes forget that it IS and expansion. Not a new game.
And the thing about Arthas dieing and how it "destroys" the lore. As Blizzard have said many times. Arthas wasen't going to be one of the main character in the Warcraft lore, people just happend to like him alot. They still have tons of lore in their backpacks and new stronger guys to interduce, that we will learn to like in time.

THAT TBC? Yeah, it'll be the same alright.
oh my lootwhore lost... starting again is one of best thing.. i am raider.. or once was.. pre tbc i saw all.. in tbc i saw half.. another half after 3.0.2 which enable content to be seen by everyone who gets 25 ppl
wow community > war worst gaming community ever , anyday in a year,
Well personally and about 30 other Ex-WoW players wont be coming back for this expansion for one reason and thats because we dont like starting the game over once every 2 years. We dont enjoy having our gear we worked for for a good year and half to be complettly useless in 1 lvl....

This is such a non argument.

Of course that could be sarcasm.
In that case, damn you.
Groovy.
You mean, it will attract you as a magnet, right?
All lies WOW FOREVER.
Look at illidian for the first tiem in a month they could raid last night and most thing blizzard is a god to provid them with that 1 day of play time in the last month.
Too bad killing aree peke was funny stuff.

I'm already attracted

-------------------------------------------------------------------
waiting for ...
