I feel that this is a very cool feature. All of these flying tools are on rails as far as I know. But they are all steps in the right direction (To implement a new dimention of arial exploration/adventure into mmorpg's). I hope to see more of this in the future, hopefully with true free control of the verticle X/Y Axis.
FINBAR --------------------------------------------- Now Playing: EQ1 (Again) For beta info, or other contact info see the user info section.
The cool thing about the D&L flying mounts, hangliders, parachutes is that you can actually control them yourself. (Not sure about the dragon though) While in WoW and EQ2 you just fly a premade route.
And the snowboarding on your shield is one of the coolest things in any MMORPG
As pretty *cough* as the EQ2 graphics are, from what I see in those movies I would have to say their flight is the worst. It doesn't even look like that creature is even bloody flying! It's wings beat out the same pattern non-stop, it's body remains in the same exact position, regardless of whether it flies up, down, to the left, or right - It's going through the same animation loop the whole freaking flight, and it's disturbing! Hate to say it guys, but the more I see from EQ2, the more unimpressed I am. And all the fanboi's think that this will be the next king of all mmorpg's to come out - are they serious? If that is the future of gaming, I am switching hobbies.
The next best one, I thought, was WoW. The flight looked beautiful and seemed to fit seemlessly with their world. I'm still not a big fan of their chosen style of graphics for a mmorpg, even though it is good visually. Just doesn't sit well with me.
The best one in my opinion was the DnL one. The animation seemed beautiful, smooth, and realistic. Not only that, but you can control where you are flying (as stated by various people who got to fly the dragon at E3). This, combined with the gorgeous aerial views, leaves no doubt in my mind that DnL has the best implementation of flight - period!
Of course, none of these games is complete yet, so it still remains to be seen which one actually does it the best; but I remain confident that my opinions will still stand come release time.
if you're talking about the griffons, then let me say this: I think they're uncontrollable for the most part. It's more so like DAoC's riding-a-horse system where you just hop on it and it takes you to a certain destination. It still is fun, but sometime I'd like to see mounts player-driven.
p.s. I remember that AC2's mounts are player-driven, but I don't really consider them virtual creatures because they're more like a spell or item you use and then it creates a mount under you (you have to craft mounts in that game i think) heh..

Dark and Light's transportation will own EQ2 and WoW's.
First of all it will be the only one where you can actually control some of the flying mounts(hang gliding, etc.). Also it will have snowboarding, which will be great for not only having some fun, but also for quick transportation down hills.
Only problem is DnL won't release for ~6 months after EQ2 and WoW.
WoW's and EQ2's transportation are almost exactly the same.

DnL might have the best flight transportation but WoW is close second. The various places/sites that you can fly over in WoW are simply amazing, even if you're just looking at them. You could fly by a tower and say "HEY! I remember that place from Warcraft 2!"
EQ2's Air transportation is just laughable... and U G L Y!
Looking forward to flying mounts. Really looking forward to controllable mounts. Just hoping that soon we'll see a lot more mounted combat, and the like. That's when it's going to be tons of fun!!
I'm also looking forward to flying mounts, to see the world from high up, soring over mountains and oceans, gliding over forests, fighting over deserts... man thats goto be a feature in every mmorpg, its good to see some are starting
i dont bother reading reviews from Ignorant WoW fanboys like Lugnard, just because i can tell he is in that genre of kids who Blizzard are aiming for as their Target market. As far as i know and i play EQ2 beta, Gripphon rides are something u need to experience urself before making illogical comments which are not backed up with logic what so ever, until than i reccomend u go post in ur WoW forrums Lugnard.
If i see 1 more ignorant post from u i will shut u down hardcore and i will make an ASS out of u infront of all these people.
Flying as a mode of transportation adds a fun element to the game, though its too bad its strictly route flying.
The only problem I have with it was the instability when testing it on WoW. Many times when using a transportation route the game would lock, and when you reentered the game you were back at your starting location. This was annoying as some of the routes took several minutes of flying to arrive at your destination and even more so if members of your party were kept waiting. However - I'm certain the other games will address this problem as in WoW.
im confused didnt FFXI have airships and Didnt L2 have those Dragon things.
those where both cooler than what is comming out in EQ2 or WoW.
i havnt looked into DnL but i dont think im going to cause from what i hear from every one is that it looks kick ass, and im tired of waiting for a game. NO MORE
any way Dont forget the past games just cause they airnt as good in your eyes to these games ok

flying dragons WILL be player controlled, none of this "preset route" poopy...
word is there will be arial combat to go along with it as well... (last i heard)...
only problem is we will have to wait untill C3-C4 before the feature is freakin implemented... i got my money on C3 though, seeing as C1 introduced the hatchlings, C2 introduces the striders, so C3 intorducing the flying ones... it just sounds right...

All of them are nice little additions, but dont really add anything to the gameplay. Good stuff, but im not terribly excited about any of it. Eq2's griffon looks awesome.
You wouldn't believe the sense of freedom you get when you have absolute control of your flight in a game. Not that I have had any experiance with it in a MMOG, but man, never underestimate the value of it.

Yes, but considering Lineage 2 in NA won't have Chronicle 3 for at least another year, it is still a loooong way off. Not to mention you will have to have a level 70 dragon pet(which requires you to be level 70 as well if I'm not mistaken). And can't only like 6 people on a server have flying dragons, or did they change that?
And P.S. - The devs have said that EQ2's griphons aren't near completion.

im pretty sure anybody in a clan which owns a castle can have one... their leader has to make it though (or something like that)...
anyways, C3 isnt TOO long off... more then likely just over half a year away (mid 2005) as they promised AT LEAST 2 chronicles a year, and C2 is supposed to be here sometime before christmas...
anyways, creating one is gonna be hard yes... but that's understandable... not only can you fly practically everywhere and anywhere, but you can also use it in combat... how many other games can say that (besides SWG, but that doesnt count)

DAoC also had flying mounts at least in hib lands. They werent all that impressive but there were great screen shots from the scenery. At the moment that seems to be what all flying mounts are good for is screen shots and EQ2 cant even seem to excel at that. These games are all still in beta though and final graphics tweaking isnt close so maybe the graphics will be greatly improved
Well actually, now that I think of it, Planetside has the best mounts, without a doubt in my mind.
3 or 4 flying mounts, ~20 ground mounts, multiple passengers, you can shoot with them.. anybody who says PS doesn't have the best mounts LIES! (Though I have never played WWII.. that might have good "mounts", too.)
Hmm.. I want to res-subsribe to PS again now.
Supposed to have more mounts this weekend, too.

there is no AIR MOUNT....its a type of public transportation. You cant get a gryphon or anything...just land creatures. The boats, flying animals, and blimps are to get you from city to city.
None of those flying mounts are worth a fresh cow patty.
