Best CPU for gaming?
I am building a new mmo gaming computer and I just do not know what CPU I should get. I do not want to penny pinch on a CPU, but I do not want to waste money on a CPU.
My delima is that I dont know if I should get a quad core or duo core. Does any MMO out today or the foreseable future make use of quad cores? If the answer is no, then I dont want to waste money on a quad core. With that said what is the best CPU out their that I should buy for MMO games? Oh it must be an Intel to, I am not an AMD kind of guy.

Get an E8400. It is the best gaming cpu.

how is buying a quad wasting money?
i got a 6600 (i know its a tad long in the tooth) but it seems to run fine and at under $150 (aus) it packs alot of punch for its price.
up to you really though. I like quad core as i can run my games, browse webpages and listen to music without any problems at all.
MMO wish list:
-Changeable worlds
-Solid non level based game
-Sharks with lasers attached to their heads
i know you said it has to be an intel but my personal recommendation is an AMD Athlon 64 X2 6000+
Plays every game i own and am interested in as well as blowing the recommended specs away for some "to be released" games.. I'd strongly suggest Windows XP for gamers also.
As a side note ignore most online surveys, personal experience and usage is the only way to see whats best for you and your needs.

Personal uage and experience as a computer repair technician m8, i've personally owned 4 Intel machines and 2 AMD machines, The intels died on me where as the only reason i've had 2 AMDs is because i upgraded from a 5200+ to the 6000+
A friend of mine has been looking into building a new computer and was thinking of the Intel Core 2 Duo E8400 @ 3.0ghz, when he finished building the computer it's specifications were superior to mine on paper, using same benchmark program he got better scores than me yet in actual games he often experiences loss of performance. He chose the parts he used because of recommendations from websites and online statistics and has become disappointed with it. I'm not saying INTEL are not good for certain things but my experience over the past 7 years is that AMD are better for gaming rigs.
I would go for the E8500, a 3,16 mhz core2 duo. I run a quad myself but in gaming it doesn't make that big difference since almost no games supposrt quad yet.
The Quad is useful if you run a lot of different programs on the same time or compile stuff. For pure gaming you can just save the money and put them on memory or the GFX card instead.

Also you probably do like me and gets stuff of a good brand (have a japanese A-Bit motherboard and Samsung memorys), I do know people who gotten performance drop because inferior motherboards.
Intels biggest + is that they don't get so hot and therefore are easy to clock. My 2,4 quad runs at 2,97 and it's top temperature is 42C with the original fan.
I bought an E8500 a couple of months ago and it works great. I haven't overclocked it yet I want to give it 6 months to bed in before I do anything. Also using a HD4870, vist ultimate 64 and 8gb DDR2. The vista drivers for the HD4870 still need work, they're fine for gaming but if I leave my PC idle for an hour ot more my system crashes and I get bsod.
core2duo is fine for gaming.. you'd be wasting processor speed in buying the quad core.. i'd say go for e8400 and up..
I'd get the Q6600. Sure.. it's a quad and most games can't use all of the cores.. but.. so? Future proofing!!
But.. if you didn't want to pony up the extra 30 bucks.. I'd get the E8400.

always choose intel.. good overclocking capabilities
core2duo is more than ok!! you can even overclock it, way fast already
if you want good overclocking, cheap price, and very good chips, go for the AMD Black edition cpus
E8400 best best.
Q6600 if ya want a quad. (I did this becuase i multi box like its my job) But the 8400 give you much better preformence on most games.
