Sound card question...

BalterBalter Member Posts: 1,015

I am currently using onboard audio and am looking into buying an inexpensive sound card.

My question is will all sound cards allow me to simultaneously have my speakers and headset plugged in? And will they allow me to have them play simultaneously or switch between?

I ask this because my computer is in a desk unit that makes the back inacessible so i can't just manually switch the inputs from headset to speakers. Also my front headphone/mic inputs are broken (unfortunate vacuum accident).

Thanks.

My build: Sapphire Radeon HD 4850, Asus P5GC-MX/1333 Motherboard, 4gb G.SKILL DDR2 667MHz RAM, Core 2 Duo e7200 CPU, 250gb Western Digital SATA Harddrive, Windows Vista Home Basic 64-bit.

I am pretty sure it isn't possible to have both speakers and headset playing at the same time.  When you add in a new sound card, you usually have to turn off the onboard audio or else you will get bugs.  There are usually pins that you connect the front panel audio wires to on the sound card.  So if you did plug it in to the front panel or onto a plug on the speakers, chances are the audio from the speakers will cut out.

I can do this via my x-fi elitepro's hardware, or there is software that will allow you to do this when the speackers are not using the headphone out slot (sometimes shared).

However, a SURE fire way, and cheap too, to do this is 2 sounds cards or a sound card and YOUR ONBOARD SOUND.

Use the sound card to play speaker and the onboard to play the head phones (the most likely problem here is having the same sound come through both of them). However, switchign between them is easy, many applications allow you to choice play back and you can always cange default sound deivce.

Most 1/2 decent sound cards have a i/o plug that can be a few things often mic and or headset.
