Just out of curiosity,
can you change keyboard bindings in FFXI? I didn't use WASD for like decade , and i am more comfortable with arow key for movement.
Thanks.

I wanted to give this game a go , so set up everything ... and then once I was in the game ( after taking out a mortgage with the playonline crap ) it was so frustrating the control system is appalling , the worst I've ever seen in any Mmo, which is a shame because it looks like it could be fun ( oh and I tried it with a gamepad too even more frustrating ).
I think the arrow keys are standard. Go to the config in game to change them.
@Summitus:
How is the gamepad worse? You've never played a FF game with a controller before on a console? Because that's how it plays. Not to mention, you can customize the buttons to your liking. So, I don't understand how the controller is bad unless you've never played on a console before. It makes things for me, 10x's easier.

It's your guess. FFXI config settings is very LIMITED. Everything is there in Config. People alibi to turn their avatar not by 90 degree was a lie. No matter you choose Full Keyboard or Compact keyboard type, it is always fixed on 90 degree turn left or right. There is another option offered to use by Mouse Movement which is the worst ever in any game design. You hold on Left Click to run.
The game settings by default is full keyboard type, I chosen Compact type for WASD. The default is not arrow keys, it's NUM Arrorws instead. The real arrows keys were used to control camera up and down, left and right. In the Command/Config, it is not possible to assign arrow key to replace WASD.
I have seen a arrow key pad.

Whatever you say. Play in first person or get a controller if you don't want to turn 90 degrees at a time I guess.
I was referring to the number pad keys. That's how pretty much every FF game on the PC used for controls. I forgot about the actual arrow keys because I never use them. So, I wasn't clear on that. If you're going to buy an key pad, might as well get a controller in its place. Plays tons better than a keyboard.

I have never tried to bind the movement keys to the arrows. I am not sure if it is possible. In the standard configuration that is used for the camera and works out really well when you use the keypad to move like the designers intended. Your middle three finders rast on 8, 4, and 6 -- which conicidentally are also arrow keys on most keyboards when numlock is off -- your pinky rests on the Enter key for accepting options in menus and it leaves your thumb on the arrows to move the camera. Heuristically this set-up is ideal for a keyboard only set up and opens up your left had to use your macros which are bound to ctrl 1-10 and alt 1-10.
Unfortunatly I have to agree with Larry about one thing ... moving with the mouse does suck. It was definaly put in later in the game for all those asnine players that can't accept an MMO doesn't use a mouse.
I've played FXII on and off for four years, the controls are imo the best of the genre. The number pad is great and Icon67's description of how your hand falls is exactly how i play... (the ring finger can also move to - for menu^^ )
The only problem with the controls in this game is that after partying for about 5 hours as a WHM the ol' Ctrl+1 claw develops!
I have to admit when coming from games like DAoC and SWG the controls in ffxi really made me angry I never switched to compact because it wasn't until I got used to the controls that I read that I could change it. Now i wish more MMOs had an option for the ffxi controls. I don't even need to use my mouse with the default settings I can just sit back and relax with my wireless keyboard in my lap its great.
The mode i believe is full keyboard and is perfect for myself .You use the keypad arrows,2/4/6/8,but you get the other options right at your finger tips as well.I believe it was #7 offers auto run,so you can type away and let your player run on it's own.The zero or ins,on same keypad offers a nice targetting option.I have not played in a long time but i believe there is also the zoom in and out right there on the same keypad as well.
One thing i always loved about FFXI,was that it is NOT a direct copy of all other games. These Developers like to make things different and usually for a good reason. They also had to design the game to work perfect for a console, unlike 99% of most MMORPG's are used on PC's.
You can bet, that Square's next MMOrpg will be again DIFFERENT and not go out to copy EQ,copied by WOW and now copied by many other games. The beauty of it all is that they make changes to the game without changing the Genre itself.
Never forget 3 mile Island and never trust a government official or company spokesman.
I use a n52, and I play the entire game with my left hand. Then use the mouse to surf the net while playing . I swear people that complain about the control system have never used a computer/console before, b/c you can make the game control however the hell you want it to.
