What worries me about TOR: No mention of...

Space flight and combat...

Crafting and trading...

Skills rather than levels...

Player housing and player cities...

Character customisation and clothing...

Landscape size and geography...

Unlockable characters...

These are all major issues. Instead, all the senior executives keep on going about Story, Story, Story! Fine, we get it. Bioware does content. But I am one of the people who think that however good a story is, I am still trapped inside it if there is nothing else to do but follow it - and the many other players who have expressed a preference for sandbox games on these forums seem to agree with me. So, precisely because Bioware didn't mention any of these things, I fear TOR might be a disappointment to those of us hoping for an open-ended game.

There's a transcript of what was said at the event on the SW:TOR forum here that has a few mentions of crafting and the likes.  The "moisture farmer" won't feature in this new game and it seems implied from another line that crafting won't be a major thing, if at all an option...

I'm a fan of Pre-NGE also m8 but SW:TOR isn't SWG m8. It's basically KotOR online, if you've played the first by bioware thats what to expect just online. Other than that it's too early to rule anything out, they've said there will be other classes just not specifics, going by this there is still a long way to go and more details will be released as time goes on.

Patience young one.. we'll have a good game.

Let's hope for a sandbox type of game. The best game will be that one where players can make impact on the world, culture and story. If the players create their own stories by fighting, crafting, creating their own invironment then it will hold the players for very long time.

Story is good, but it's not all. People will like to make their own story by leaving something behind them, that other players will remember ... great fighter, crafter, politician, musician and etc.

I thought I read somewhere either by BW or LA they said paraphrasing "we recognise not everyone wants to be Luke Skywalker."

I also could have sworn they said moisture farmer in list of professions, although they did say they would not have story arcs like other.  Well possible profession.  Politician is there as well.

"The solution is to give each class its own story arc. While it means the writers have to create a lot more content, it also pays tribute to the fact that "not everybody's fantasy was to be Luke." There's plenty of opportunity to tell equally interesting stories for other possible character types like smugglers, bounty hunters, politicians and moisture farmers. Okay, well, maybe not so much with the moisture farmers, but those other possibilities seem like they'd have experiences that are every bit as exciting as you'd get as a Jedi."

    http://pc.ign.com/articles/922/922115p2.html

I read this to mean that if a moisture farmer makes it in they just won't have written story arcs.  But they are still possible by them mentioning them.

I guess again we will have to wait til they official announce professions.  I am sure much more is to come soon.  I wouldn't be surprised if this is a just test the reactions before we tell them everything phase.

The game looks like a class based for what they said in the conference.
    Player housing and player cities...
    Nothing said at all.
    Character customisation and clothing...
It was said in the press conference, customization is important. Is one of the few things they really talked about, not too much anyway.
    Landscape size and geography...
    Nothing said.

Too few information. It looks like they almost started development. And yeah, the game doesnt look as a sandbox. It doesnt is bad or good for me, but I fear a lot of players will feel disapointed when the game launches.

they said these things on that chatlog 1up or someone did.

  • Well, wait and see.  The story system intrigues me to be sure, it's definitely what will set this one apart from all other MMO's, but yes, I do want to see more details of the professions, combat system, social systems, player housing, crafting, etc.

They have to know that there will at least have to be something offered there, because anyone coming from SWG to a new Star Wars MMO is going to EXPECT to find those things and will be disappointed if they aren't.

  • SendenSenden Member UncommonPosts: 602

Tbh, anyone who is naive enough to believe this will be SWG done right was always going to be in for a shock. Why would bioware want to try and create a niche game when they have the resources and creative expertise to potentially take on WoW?

However, I think bioware have potentially already made a huge mistake by waffling on about all the great features which make it sound like a single player game. It's obvious that they are marketing it for the general audience as opposed to the mmo fans... it could work but it could also backfire and they could try too much and fail.  I mean come on... if they didn't actually say it was it was an MMO, you'd have never known.

I don't mind if it's not a sandbox game but if they want me to show an interest in it, they had better not make it KOTR online because that simply won't work in an mmo. I also can't see how npcs will work... I mean if you go around with a group of npcs to quest and stuff, I fail to see the point of even making it an online game.

Which brings me to my next point.. the whole "feel like a hero" thing just doesn't work in an mmo. If I want to feel like a hero in a game, I will play single player games. The entire point of an mmo is to shy away the be a hero thing  and make you feel like you're just another person amongst many.. to me that is and always will the reason I play mmos for that different type of immersive experience.  I think WAR got it right for me... you really felt like just another soldier in the war.

Still, i'm going to follow this game with much anticipation but with almost equal amounts of skepticism. If anyone from Bioware reads these forums, I seriously suggest hiring a new spokesperson because the person who was doing the announcement is clearly clueless of what mmos are all about imo. However if they adhere to at least some of the basics of what made SWG great for it's fanbase (the sandboxish feel to it, the player cities, the GCW and crafting) while shaking up the mmo genre a little bit (think WoW,) then I really do think we'll have a WoW beater.

If I had to guess regarding all the relevent info...

They are going to see what pops up in the Oforums through this coming weekend.  Spend the next week formulating responses and any critical details they can release.  As of now mods and devs are very quiet over there.

I bet they are taking their time to form responses in a way to not be called liars later on.  I just hope they do not take to much time in providing relevent info.

It will start to alienate people from this as their excitement fades and the worst case scenarios start running unchecked in their minds.  I know this will happen to me if I don't see more info in a week.

I honestly belief crafting/housing and even companion selection won't change that much from how it was done in both KOTOR games. In KOTOR you were able to do all these things in your ship the Ebon Hawk, I still think they will stick with the ship/hub aspect  of the original two games only this time instead of being given your ship as part of the story you would purchase it from a pre defined stock pile of faction based ships.

Hopefully this will finaly kill off SWG, which is a shadow of it's former self.  Bioware hasn't made a bad game yet, so count on it being very good.  The thing I don't like though is the character looks and jumbo lightsabers that look like they came from lego starwars.

SWG was open ended but it was quite a simple game really.  It was just big open and mostly empty terrain that let you drop stuff in it that had no real variation or interaction, most of the content was in crafting and how your character looked :P

Plus half the game never even worked properly.

Just wait for further information, it's too early to get into all those details, I also thought the critical questions such as those in the OP were missed out yesterday but it doesn't mean they aren't there so let's wait.

Just as well they don't give a fuck about SWG or us jaded, misguilded fools that think it's the be all and end all of game design.  We'd be talking about a whole heap of shitty SWG clones, while all the cool kids play WoW.

They're going after WoW with TOR and WAR, no doubt about it, EA will be expecting 5mil subs out of each game, the 150k people that subbed SWG for more than 3 months at a time are as relevent to them as the phonograph is to Sony BMG.

...The spread of secondary and latterly of tertiary education has created a large population of people, often with well developed literary and scholarly tastes, who have been educated far beyond their capacity to undertake analytical thought.

If they were going after the WoW and WAR crowd they'd have made the game medieval not in the StarWars genre. LA and Bioware are making an online version of Knights of the Old Republic, it's that simple, KotOR1 but online..  Those that haven't played it do so, as you'll get to grips with what this game will be like at it's core.

Until further info is released i'll be viewing SW:TOR as KotOR1 played online from what i've read so far. This is a good thing mind you as when playign the original i always thought it would made an outstanding MMORPG, finally the RPG is being brought back to MMOs.

SW:TOR will appeal to a lot of people, it won't appeal to everyone though but thats to be expected with anything.

The bottom line is that to say they're aiming at players of a certain game is false, they're aiming at the fans of the single player games by making the MMO similar at it's core foundations, the people who played the single player games may be in other MMO's today but thats merely coincidence. The single player games of KotOR sold in mass numbers and still continue to sell, this is easilly seen by the prices in stores for them, any other game would be down to £5 brand new but KotOR and KotOR:TSL are still minimum of £10 - £15 each brand new. The sales of the single player games is the reason why they are doing an MMO, they know they'll get many sales from it and if the game is good enough they'll continue to get players paying the Sub fee.

yeah it was clear m8, but it's still looked at by some as targetting those players, i seriously doubt they'll be looking at those numbers you mentioned though, for one thing 5mil from WAR is over 5x the current number playing it  lol..    5mil from WoW is about 60% of it's players (before anyone gets started i'm the one that counts players, not sub numbers, people have multiple accounts in games like WoW and many others)..

Hello. How are you? Please read the lines below:

    Pre-alpha, pre-alpha, pre-alpha.

Seriously, they will reveal details about the game gradually, give Bioware a break, the game has only just been officially announced.

Yeah, need to remember companies involved and the timescales though, particularly with WAR. WAR has shifted 1mil?   I think I'm right in saying that it's only shipped in US and EU regions so far?  In comparrison, after 4 years, WoW has around 5mil subs.  Of course it's all EA and Bliz's word we have to believe so you can make of that what you will but it seems reasonable that WAR has managed to get a playerbase approx. 1/5 that of WoW's in the EU/US regions. Thinking about it like that, it's not too much of a stretch to envisage it doing 5mil subs.  As for LA/BioWare/EA SWTOR, it's anyone's guess right now, WoW numbers are definately going to be in the back of EA's mind on that one though, having just shelled ot $860mil for the company.

Honestly, it doesn't take much reasoning to make it seem feasible, especially when you toss EA into the mix cos we all know, EA =$$$  greedy bastards.  Anyhow as I always say with shit like this, it's internal company politics and we'll never truly know, but it's fun to second guess them.

Unlockable characters would be the worst for it. It was the worst thing for SWG. Though I was always a believe jedi should not be a playable class in the initial timeline they were going for.

And I am just expecting KoToR online and will definitely check it out but I have no expectations of it being anywhere near similar to SWG. LA hopefully learned some things from it but I am pretty sure they will not want to make the same mistakes they did.

    Space flight and combat...

Space Combat was a part of KOTOR (I don't remember if it was part of KOTOR 2 or not). Also the art they've put out has spaceships featured.

I would be surprised if there wasn't any.

    Crafting and trading...

Crafting and Trading are staples of most online games anymore. I would be surprised if this was not included.

    Skills rather than levels...

    You got me here.

    Player housing and player cities...

SWG was unusual (from what I've seen) about the creation of housing and cities. From what I can tell, this remains to be seen.

    Character customisation and clothing...

This is another thing that has become a staple of most games. I would be surprised if it wasn't in their new game.

    Landscape size and geography...

    Unknown.

    Unlockable characters...

I guess I don't mind unlockable characters (which it seems I read somewhere that Bioware alluded to the possibility of unlockable characters. I don't know if they were talking about NPCs or "Alpha" classes.

Alpha classes are nice if they're actually attainable and not the SOE "let's raise the bar every time someone unlocks an alpha"...
