DDR3 or DDR2?

cvettecvette Member UncommonPosts: 82

If price is only a small issue (200-300 bucks), is it worth going to DDR3 ram?

thanks

DDR3 is rather pointless i mean it can be better in situations, but the price just doesn't make with worth it (Seeing as ddr2 is massively overclockable).

One thing too note is that new intel i7 chips will be coming out and those are ddr3 only, however, by then ... if your gettign a new system theres no point in waiting or planning on using the memory you buy now 3-4 years in the future. So i'd stick with the DDR2 unless the prices are super close... and they are not.

There is no difference between DDR2 and DDR3 with current FSB limits, infact its a little worse:

Standard Name Memory Clock Cycle Time I/O Bus Clock Data Transfers/Sec Module Name Peak Transfer Rate
    DDR2-800 200 MHz 5 ns 400 MHz 800 Million PC2-6400 6400 MB/s
    DDR3-800 100 MHz 10 ns 400 MHz 800 Million PC3-6400 6400 MB/s
    DDR2-1066 266 MHz 3.75 ns 533 MHz 1066 Million PC2-8600 8533 MB/s
    DDR3-1600 200 MHz 5 ns 800 MHz 1600 Million PC3-12800 12800 MB/s

The advantage of DDR3 is that it consumes less energy then DDR2, it also uses a wider bus to transmit more data.  However, it comes with a much bigger price tag and twice as much time taken to complete a cycle.  You would need double the FSB to match the Cycle Time which motheboard manufactures won't match until next year.

Currently there is no need to pay for the DDR3s, once the FSB of the processors and motherboards get faster it will be the only way but that's still in the future. Maybe for a portable computer where electricity is an issue, but only if you plan to use the battery a lot.

Use the extra bucks to get a better GFX card or if you already budgeted that, a bigger power supply (Youll need at least 650 W for the high end GFX cards today, and 750 if youll plan to use extra harddrives. My GTX 280 runs on 750W with 5 harddrives but not 6).

Extra harddrive space is never wrong either :)
