One of the last MMO's that was a "world"

Like EQ, and UO to others, DAOC had a "world", a place you wanted to escape into and that made sense for the NPC's populating it.  Subsequent games are theme parks or arenas or, worse, linear storyline progression plots.

But DAOC did have a "world" and climate and day and night.  Escaping into the Camelot world was like diving into Norrath or Middle Earth; the enivornment seemed more that just a playing field for a game.

I have not played DAOC for years, but I remember it fondly.

Hopefully, some new MMO will come out that will offer us a "world".

Heh, I remember the first time I picked up DAoC and made my first character.  It was Midgard and I made a dwarf with the intent of making him a berserker.  I walked out of Vasudeheim (for those of you who might know it) and saw some wildlings, spiders, snakes, wolves of 2 different colors and I just stood there with the hills on one side covered with trees and the lake on the other.  I then noticed the small island that was crammed with wolves of 3 or 4 different levels and was a bit afraid of going there because some of them conned red to me.

At some point I stopped looking around and noticed others milling around and killing things and walked up to him and asked him what he was upto.  He told me he had a quest to kill 3 wildlings and bring back their ears and figured there was some reward.  I then proceded to kill a few things just to get a feel for everything before I too went over and got the quest.  I found that same person later on and we grouped up and continued to kill other monsters around... man those are some nostalgic moments.

Saddly I don't think anybody is interested in making anything like that, at least not for a few years.  It's just not what the majority of the playerbase wants.  I'd go back to DAoC but it's population is dismal at best.  Maybe... if they ever decide to make the Origins server I'll come back....

No required quests! And if I decide I want to be an assassin-cartographer-dancer-pastry chef who lives only to stalk and kill interior decorators, then that's who I want to be, even if it takes me four years to max all the skills and everyone else thinks I'm freaking nuts. -Madimorga-

Shadowbane is now empty, but it got probably 3 more years added to its life by going FreeToPlay. DAOC would probably get that and more, it is still a great game(besides the slow combat and bad UI).

Extremism in the defense of Liberty is no vice.

I don't mind combat speed, it beats people runing around in circles (gets me dizzy). I agree that UI is way overdue for rebuilding.

OT : Any chance they will make Origins happen , or it's dead in the watter already?
