2 major gold selling sites stop selling AOC gold

Make of that what you will. Perhaps Funcom has found a reliable way of preventing or banning gold sellers?

Or maybe there's just no money to be made in a game that nobody plays?

Funcom hasn't done shit to prevent gold farming/selling.

yeah 11680 people banned due to gold selling according the WAR site, whatever you think of warhammer mythic have really kicked ass when it comes to gold selling. Mark said he personally and the company as a whole had been offered money by the gold sellers to turn a blind eye but told them where to go. This makes me extreamly suspious of other games like WoW where they are absoltly pathetic with dealing with gold sellers and ban people who post about their innaction on the forums.

I think it's pretty obvious that gold sites dropping AoC do so because the populations are so low as to make it not worth thier while, would probably be just about worth it for them on 4 or 5 servers perhaps.

This is Mark Jacobs post about it gold sellers in WAR from a couple of days after launch.

I hate gold sellers/spammers. No, that’s not strong enough, let me try again. I HATE GOLD SELLERS WITH EVERY FIBER OF MY BEING. Ah, that’s better. Now, why do I hate them you may ask? I hate them for a number of reasons, most of which have been detailed in various interviews I’ve done over the years. And now that they have taken their obnoxiousness to new levels with gold service spamming, I HATE GOLD SPAMMERS EVEN MORE NOW THAN EVER BEFORE. For years, lowlifes like IGE have told us, in defense of their behavior, that they a) are just providing a service; b) don’t interfere with players enjoyment of the game. Well, I can’t argue with (a), they are providing a service, just like maggots I suppose but I’ve always argued that (b) is totally and complete BS. Now, those old arguments aside, I can’t see how this new generation of pond scum (new and improved, with 25% more scummy action!) can argue that their constant spamming of chat channels doesn’t interfere with players enjoyment of the game (I’m waiting for the whole “Oh, you can always just turn off chat” argument). I hated seeing their messages when I played WoW or any other MMO and I’ve been waiting for the day that WAR launched so I could have the absolute pleasure of instituting policies to make their lives more difficult so we could drive them out of WAR.

Since WAR launched we have been banning these jerks like crazy. As of Saturday Night, we had banned about 400 of them. My CSRs have a zero tolerance policy. We don’t wait and let them stay in the game and ban them en-masse, my guys ban their useless, time-consuming butts right away. We have a strike team whose sole job it is to get these guys off our servers as quickly as possible. This weekend, we unveiled a new wrinkle in the fight against them, the public ban message. Players on our Phoenix Throne server have been treated to special messages when a gold seller/spammer is banned. I’ve given them a wide leash to come up with creative messages to tell the entire community who has been banned and we keep it within the Warhammer universe. Messages like “Tchar’zanek has ordered the slaughter of [Spammer] and all others of his kind who weaken the Raven Host by providing wealth and power to the unworthy” have been seen all weekend. We will continue this policy and expand it to the other servers. We are in for a real fight against these bottom feeders and it will be a long and costly battle but it’s one we are going to take to them and this is only the first step. After all, this is WAR…

BTW, for those who might be tempted to think that we are doing this so we could offer our own service or because we do make money off their boxes (traditionally, gold sellers will quickly shift to buddy disks and free trials though to lower their costs) let me tell you this. I’ve been offered “a piece of the action” both personally and corporately in the past if I will either turn a blind eye or help them in their actions. This would have netted me and/or Mythic a very, very tidy sum, far more than we would see from box sales. My answer was and always will remain the same:

    Go to hell.

Look, most people agree to that gold sellers are a pain. Having played my share of MMO's I can reassure you that both Blizz and FC unroot these organisations as efficiently as Mythic. If I can say something seminasty about clever mister Mark Jacobs, he is applying a very old but extremely effective trick to bind his WAR community together. Open the history books and look to what hapens in any dissolving community with extreme polarization is exposed to war against a third party (Germany(Hitler), Italy (Mussolini), Spain (franco regime),etc). Regardless of if the thrid party is the agressor or if the community is agressing, it always bring people together. Mr Mark Jacobs is doing the same thing. He is diverting the MMO community's rage over to the chinese gold spammers. I don't know how well this actually will work, but being a professional I can see that this has tremendous marketing and community potential. Just to let you know Noggy, you are the proof of that Marks strategy works, by posting this message over here now. There is nothing noble in what he is doing, all the other guys are doing that as well but Mark know how to take advantage of this process.

Did you want to discuss the topic in the original post? The post about Funcom potentially having found a reliable way of preventing or banning gold sellers?

To the OP: I know that if Funcom had found an effective way to stop gold selling, they'd be all over it as positive item to communicate to the masses.  I never had an issue with gold, and there weren't too many money sinks at the time, a not so active player economy, it created a surplus for me.

Those may be contributing factors, but purely speculatory on my end.

Up until just last week I was getting messages from gold sellers. Some still make their way in the mail system. Its not completly gone, but I'm know, from previous statements from FC, that they have been mass banning accounts. They just don't feel like they need to state that they are doing because all MMOs do it.

    Interesting!

I never thought Funcom had a hands off approach to gold sellers, but its good to see they've commented on keeping on top of it. I'm curious about the notion of a gold selling site dropping a title however, as my understanding would indicate that if it was lucrative; they'd keep at it regardless of any company's efforts to stop them.

Good info though, thanks for that Xpiher.

Most likely due to the low numbers of players starting out in the game. If a game's not selling there's no reason to continue a leveling or gold service for it.

So I guess you owe me to edit out that off topic reply above. My point is again, I think most devs are doing their best in fighting gold spams and that most of them are quite successfull in doing that. It's just that Mythic is better in communicating what they do on that side, for obvious reasons.

I dont think AoC is doing worse than the 500 people who still play Hellgate and that still has gold spam like no other.

I'll leave it as it is for now. From the second sentence to the second to last sentence the post didn't discuss the original post, didn't follow up MJ's stance on gold selling; but instead went into some Orwellian 1984 references to Hitler, Stalin, their approaches and how MJ does the same.

Did you want to discuss whether Funcom has potentially found a reliable way of preventing or banning gold sellers?

Do as you like then. My reply was to Noggy that clearly ate the Mythic communication bait. I thought I already commented on that I think FC and other devs are doing a moderate job in banning gold spammers even though they are not as vocal about it as MJ.

There is no reliable way of preventing  in such games.

Those guys running WAR are just brave if they really did ban so many accounts.

Don't forget that their PR can tell you pretty much anything even if not true. Just to make you happy.

Also, there is a common misunderstanding that gold comes from gold farmers (most have chinese in mind) only. Most such companies buy gold at low prices from people that either quit or have enough and then sell it at higher prices. They have professional farmers in most successful games only i.e. in games where the demand for gold is really high.

As to gold selling. Everyone has his/hers own oppinion. This topic has been discussed many times on these forums.

Personally I'm not against it. I think it is only natural.

Game clients of such games where gold selling has any reason should have chat filters in their options to prevent unwanted msgs to those that really can't stand them

FC did a really good job getting rid of these gold sellers. However their method was quite different. Instead of doing like WAR and banning gold seller accounts, they decided to get rid of PLAYERS so that gold sellers would lose all their customers. It's quite ingenious really.

I'm sorry it's simply not true, I'm not in anyway a WoW hater, I think it's a fantastic MMO but blizzard put very little if any effort into stoping gold selling or at least they didn't I've not played for quite some time. There were certain places in WoW that always had multiple gold farming botted hunters, when blizzard released the armory you could see these people had never gained any faction further confirming them to be bots, You could report these guys every day and yet they would last on average at least a month before they got banned. I posted a polite post on the blizzard forms detailing where the bots where, how you could intentify them and half jokingly said that if blizzard employeed me I'd get rid of the majority of them in a week. They banned my account. It's clear that companys make alot of money from the gold farmers and in many games I've been suspious that they actually quite like the money they get from them.

Yes I do think good communication works and makes the community like them more and be more sympathic to them and hopefully other developers will learn that great communication is the way to go. Currently I plan to play WAR till the WOW expansion, then play that till christmas time and then hopefully Darkfall will be out, I have no loyalty to WAR I'm just impressd with the way they have acted.

Once a game starts to struggle with population they get very aprensive about banning people, you can see that happened in Vanguard where the biggest cheaters mostly got temp bans if they did anything at all and the same is true in AoC. Early on when they had 800k people playing they were agressive with the cheaters, a few months later with populations wanning dramatically then didn't ban anyone guilty of the gem dupe and they took a month after it became common knowlege to fix it.

I'm generally cynical when it comes to marketing and I'm not easily mislead but you can easily see that mythic are doing the things they talk about in game and they have made it very easy and quick now to report gold sellers.

By the way those comments from him come from his blog and are not posted on the offical WAR site.

    Don't patronize gold sellers.

Don't tolerate those around you who do, if you know they do.

CH, Jedi, Commando, Smuggler, BH, Scout, Doctor, Chef, BE...yeah, lots of SWG time invested.

Yep, this is true. FC just cannot afford to ban anyone at the moment because every ban is less money for them. You could do almost anything in AoC at the moment and not get banned.

Thats because War bans thier asses for gold spaming. Mythic has banned over 10,000 accounts for selling gold.

yeah 11680 people banned due to gold selling according the WAR site, whatever you think of warhammer mythic have really kicked ass when it comes to gold selling.

Another one? Hmmm this one is tough so it either is legit or very well doen.. I guess time will tell if we have another soldier in the battle.

REally, then why did i get a gold tell spam every 4 minutes when war came out and now i may get one every 2-3 days? (I have a ton of play time too)

Why its simple WAR is banning the junk out of them + no trial accounts.

When you get a tell from a golld seller all you do is type /rg and it fills out a report on the last tell you got all by itself . all you do is hit submit, after they they are banned within a day most often.

No farming/gold selling company can keep buying accounts if they are banned so quickly , its simply not profitable.

PS this post is a super troll, or a fanboy actting liek funcom did this right; and i for one am not gonna hate on aoc for no reason.

Maybe, just maybe the community in this game is smart enough to just not buy gold. Maybe with the smaller community (assuming it is smaller) people just understand that.

After all, the most effective way to get rid of gold sellers is for people to just say no.

Thats most definatly not the case, there were plenty of people buying gold especially during the time when people were trying to get their citys to t3. Gold spam and gold spam in game e-mail was really bad in AOC. One of the worst I've experienced, back in june you could get 10 gold tells an hour easy.

Buying gold is less tempting in this game for many though than in something like WoW, here there isn't much use for gold anymore.

I'll admit to buying gold once though I feel I had an excuse, I clicked on a link in the WoW forums to what was meant to be a picture of raid loot, unfortunatly it was a keylogger. I realised my mistake and thought I'd cleaned my computer up but unfortunatly not and I logged in the next day to find the 2000g I was saving up for my epic flying mount had been stolen and everything from my bags and bank sold. There is no way I'd have enjoyed farming that money back, blizzard wouldn't help so I brought the gold. Of course then it was like they had stolen 40 bucks from me rather then 2k gold but that felt less of an issue, I don't think I could have continued to play the game at that point without replaceing what had been taken.

People aren't buying gold from these two sites at least. There's a completely different reason behind that though. Two actually, one there aren't enough people buying the game to begin with, two everyone else is reaching endgame (most likely) either they already bought gold, or they didn't need to. These would be the two most likely reasons those two sellers stopped.
