It seems like the world and his wife is lamenting the state of the MMORPG industry at the moment, but if you had to choose ONE reason that stands out amongst all the others as being your pet hate, which would it be?...
I'm very disappointed with WAR. It's a good game but its more of the same. You guys follow?
Check it- WAR is supposed to be EVERYWHERE. But how can this be a war? I mean I've just booted up into the Drawf starting area and I do see Trolls or whatever trying to invade. But its all scripted. The trolls aint gonna ever takeover.
So silly. doesn't matter if I quest or not quest. The mobs will continue on their boring routes like any other MMO
It's just like the starting island in EQ2. You have mobs trying to takeover but they never do. Just a fake war
PVE = pure Fail for me. The PvP seems interesting but a big step backwards. Instanced BGs galore. Grrr....
I can ignore most of the community if I have to as long as the game is good on solo content and/or I have my guild to group with, and the troll/fanboi wars just make me laugh for the most part. I'm torn, however, between lack of innovation and grind as my choice for your poll. They both irritate me. I'd LOVE to find a game without too much of the repetitive sort of grind that sucks all the motivation to play right out of me in a different setting with all sorts of stuff I've not done a million times before. I'm beginning to wonder if that'll happen in my lifetime!
Had to laugh at this. I'm sure they'd love to take risks. But you guys are so mercurial with your tastes that they can make changes and they just won't be the right ones.
I mean, seriously, how many of you actually have invested in a game company? Where's your risk?
What I'm really reading there is that you want them to take a risk but it is some "unknown/undefined" risk that the player does't even know.
It almost seems that what a good amount of players on this site want are the old games, just with updated graphics.
I don't really see that as anything new.
And those old games are there. But the dev's chose to make changes, probably because they wanted to keep those games going.
But EQ is there, UO is there, SWG is there. Not the same but certainly different enough from games like WoW and COX, and LOTRO.
And after the dev's have spent all that money and no one wants to play except a few then what? You will just go on to another game and another studio will go under.
I'm afraid, as Jon said, you will have to look to the indy studios. You may get more bugs and yesteryear's graphics but it's there that you will find games that take risks.
So I guess the question is, for those who are talking about game companies taking risks, what indy games (other than dark fall?) are you looking at?
Like Skyrim? Need more content? Try my Skyrim mod "Godfred's Tomb."
games are too fkn easy, i dont want guides ANYWHERE, i want to have people figure things out themselves. why not have RANDOM quests, and in that way there is no way that someone can go to a web site and just look up said quest name. i dont think global chat is at all immersive, especially when you see the same f-tards saying the same thing all day (not to mention the door it leaves wide open for gold farming).
whats more mmorpg's dont have pvp in the conventional sense, they have build vs build or gear vs. gear maybe even gank vs. gank but really it involves no actual skill or reflexes :::1,2,3,4,1,2,6,1,2,5 (heal),1,2,7,8,1,2::: pwned <- gtfo that isnt skill its called sequencing, come see me in a fps. and then theres little tards that like to try to use lag... its just pathetic. why not have it REALLY involve reflexes? aww would the kiddies and sissies stop playing? good.
partying is kind of stupid in most games too, when you think about the fact that it seems the lowest level most useless bastard in the party always seems to get the good rolls. then theres the idiots that think wiping a party is a "lol" thing. add in the homo that joins a party has them wait 5 min so they can catch up and THEN decides he needs to take a phone call. clans/guilds/fellowships/w/e equally pointless, needy bunch of pansies, or some power tripping nazis either way it amounts to drama, cant stand the beggers really though, atleast i feel like the nazis have earned their stuff. the whole system is trash and needs to be tossed.
why do we not have an official gundam mmorpg? enough damn elves already, screw em! the whole thing is just done to death (im sure it wont cause the next 50 games coming out to grind to a halt). even people who love fantasy are sick of the whole fantasy setting. and the sci fi games that come out are always under developed garbage (sorry i dont see EVE as a game, more of an outer space boredom sim) planetside, tabula rasa, AO while sci fi has the GREATEST potential for mind blowing visuals (white holes, pulsars etc.) they make more games where the most impressive thing is going to be some stupid fire spell.
oh damn...im ranting, my bad. the list does go on. but the lack of innovation has got me playing more offline games lately than online games. atleast that way i know noones cheating.
I personally think its the silly war between fanbois and trolls. Unfortunately i've been drawn into it too but trying to back away.
If you like a game play it and enjoy it. Dont let anyone tell you differently! If you dont like the game simply unsubscribe or not play it!. its that simple. Too many many ppl get bent way out shape.
Played : WOW, LOTRO, COH/COV, EQ2, SWG, and WAR. Playing EVE Online and AOC. Wtg for SW:TOR and WOD
I went with Linear Gameplay, but I could've gone with at least a few off of that list. To be clear, I don't think that linear game play is bad, I just can't stand it personally. IMO, the genre needs a MUCH better balance of linear and non-linear games.

I doubt the people who voted lack of inovation and risks are willing to risk losing more than an hour or two of doing something... much less when compared to risking man decades required for making a 'fully featured' MMORPG(all those hours of everyone on the team added together).
Of course when someone does try something different forumers will invest manyears of flamming complaining about it being different in a matter of weeks(days?, hours?).
I find it amazing that by 2020 first world countries will be competing to get immigrants.

EVE Online has done well. Developers just need to stick to their original vision and don't cave in
please dont mistake it for hype, a few future games do look like they will break the mold.
as much as hellgate sucked/sucks atleast they did try, WAY more innovation than i see from any other game to come out in the past ...what like 5 years?

Well then, there you go. Good answers.
And yes I know that SWG was different after NGE but if I was to log into it would the first thing that came to mind be "It's WoW"?
Or does it in reality still have very unique gameplay elements that would be considered very different.
As far as the investment, I think I will make the assumption, because even though you and I might have game company stock, a lot of people I don't believe would. I think perhaps more would have given to a private game company and would love to hear what they have invested in.
Like Skyrim? Need more content? Try my Skyrim mod "Godfred's Tomb."
I play mmogs for the people i can meet there. How easy is it to talk with people all over the world and do something together? The timezones are not really a huge problem, geological difference is. I got some rl left too, can't really afford travelling to other countries.
And if that community sucks, the best game can't do anything for me. Some game companies think it's better to lock you into regional servers, so i avoid them like the plague. Some games just have horrible communities, like GuildWars. It's actually a good example, because it's a nice PvE/PvP mix. But the community seems to consist largely of 13 year olds..
So, for me, i need an international game that does not lock me into regional servers. There are not an awful lot of those..
my problem is that everything is the same, i dont know if this falls under "no innovations" or "devs are too scared to take risks" .... its just everything is the same.
if there would be MMOFPS's MMO-Worlds, Hardcore MMOs as well as casual MMOs then i think there would be a lot less complaining. Maybe MMO developers should start defining MMO into subclasses.
WoW is not an EQ1 clone, saying it is, is disrespectful to EQ. WoW is a single player game with the MMO part coming in at the end. EQ1 back in the day was a true MMO, you needed other players for nearly anything, you actually had to respect your fellow player instead of being a complete douche or else risk being ostracized or black listed. instead of the idiots breeding from WoW who want to solo everything because thier social skills come down to "omg you all suck!"
thats why i say everything now is a WoW clone, because comparing these games now to EQ1 would be a complete and utter diss to EQ1.
I dont know what the developers are doing? WoW, WAR, AoC, Pirate King, EQ, SWG or whatever just use the same system! There are hundreds of different gameplay systems to choose from.......but they all use just ONE.
Login, do quest, follow arrow, search for loot, find NPC.......would be nice to have a game to play instead of doing that crap all over all day long.
Games played:AC1-Darktide'99-2000-AC2-Darktide/dawnsong2003-2005,Lineage2-2005-2006 and now Darkfall-2009..... In between WoW few months AoC few months and some f2p also all very short few weeks.
Lack of innovation. I dont know what the developers are doing? WoW, WAR, AoC, Pirate King, EQ, SWG or whatever just use the same system! And SW:TOR are doing same formula wow and many others use, but still many will follow it becouse its SW and they think bioware know how to make rpg's so it must be good.
Its maybe not even bioware's fault but EA behind it and money thats involved with this project:(
It will fail offcorse not for the masses they want wow copy, but for true hardcore rpg fan's it will be another garbage mmo:P

I try really hard to imagine that SWTOR wil not be WoW with Star Wars art graphic over it. In my world it will be a fun and amazing innovative Star Wars MMO. I mean, its to be released in 2010 or something.......the devs must have something different for us..right? Its the future for gods sake!
I'll repeat over and over once again what my beef is. Lack of exploration possibilities which comes from lack of content.
There should be hundreds of hours worth of locations to explore much as the single player game Oblivion had such except with the mix of group and solo content of course.
I'm glad Bioware is one of the few companies that realize Exploration is a pillar of MMOs even though The Old Republic will be their first MMO. Their recognition of that pillar gives me hope for MMOs.
I just hope MMO companies can realize some of us are explorers.
Lack of innovation. When I saw this option I didn't even bother to read the rest of them.
I want an MMO that has none of the traditional quest structure. I don't want to go get a random non player character 10 lynx furs. Repeatable quests? Are you kidding me? Now I can do the exact quest over and over. What sort of world has a person who wants a never-ending supply of anything? Provide me with a rich enough, and believable enough environment - one in which the players can create the quests.
I want to be able to actually affect the world around me. The new phasing technology that Blizzard has been working on for Wrath needs to be expanded on and fully incorporated into an MMO.
I'm just sick of static worlds I guess. But it's going to be ten years from now (probably more) before developers and more importantly investors get their heads out of their asses and do any of this.

I'm a proponent of more sandbox style games but I chose lack of innovation.
That is the real problem in my view.
I wouldn't bash linear games quite as much if they actually provided some kind of unique gameplay instead of just copying each other.
I want to play games I haven't played before, not just reskinned copies.
innovation too.
games are too fkn easy, i dont want guides ANYWHERE, i want to have people figure things out themselves. why not have RANDOM quests, and in that way there is no way that someone can go to a web site and just look up said quest name. i dont think global chat is at all immersive, especially when you see the same f-tards saying the same thing all day (not to mention the door it leaves wide open for gold farming).
whats more mmorpg's dont have pvp in the conventional sense, they have build vs build or gear vs. gear maybe even gank vs. gank but really it involves no actual skill or reflexes :::1,2,3,4,1,2,6,1,2,5 (heal),1,2,7,8,1,2::: pwned <- gtfo that isnt skill its called sequencing, come see me in a fps. and then theres little tards that like to try to use lag... its just pathetic. why not have it REALLY involve reflexes? aww would the kiddies and sissies stop playing? good.
