Mount and Blade?

Has anyone ever heard of the RPG called Mount and Blade?

And does anyone know if it's worth a try or not?

There is a demo for it here on fileplanet

    www.fileplanet.com/search.aspx

I personally didn't like it although it is more of a realistic game I liked how you shoot arrows where you want to as a FPS or TPS. But you can do that in Oblivion and I liked that game much better.   But my opinion is only from playing a bit of the demo. Games either impress me right away or they don't. If they don't at first then most likely they won't later on in the game.

But try out the demo and see how it goes, its about 300mb

For sure give it a try. I did, and ended up buying the game.

Check out the forums as well: http://www.taleworlds.com/

A few folks make mods for it as well you can find there.

How realistic is this game? If that's one of its advantages, what are the details? Does that mean realistic graphics, realistic game mechanics, what?

The FPS and TPS options for firing a bow and arrow sound good.

Basically when you are fighting and running around in keeps or city's it is FPS / TPS but when you are  on the maijn map you look down on top of a little horse running around.

The main feature i liked in it was the mounted combat was way cool to play and the Arena battles, you can joust, shoot bows and all kinds of neat shit. The realistic approach come's from it being strictly medieval no fantasy so think knights, archers, jouster's, henchmen, peasants e.t.c.

I used to play it a lot.  Now I run it about once a week just to screw around.  It's a neat concept.  The mounted combat is great.  If you're using a melee weapon while riding it adds the speed of the horse to your swing allowing you to do greater damage.  You can also charge people with the horse and knock them down and trample them.

The combat is pretty good.  It focuses on active input so you have to pay attention and parry in the direction of the incoming attacks.  The weapons have swing speed and do various kinds of swings depending on what you're using.

My only gripe with this game is that it was not multiplayer in any way.  Many times I'd think "wow, this would be great with a buddy or 2" and hope that one day something like this would make its way into a more mainstream game.

No required quests! And if I decide I want to be an assassin-cartographer-dancer-pastry chef who lives only to stalk and kill interior decorators, then that's who I want to be, even if it takes me four years to max all the skills and everyone else thinks I'm freaking nuts. -Madimorga-

Best combat system I've encountered in any game, ever.

M&B's principle advantage is it's combat system, probably the most realistic I have seen in the medieval weapons category.  It is also easily moddable, someone for instance replaced all the characters with Star Wars Jedi and infantry.

That however is where the great stuff ends, the remainder of the game is fairly mundane, from graphics to economic systems to leveling.

Bear in mind though, I stopped playing it while it was still in Beta, they may have improved some features since.

The game is awesome.   It is as realistic as you want it to be.  That is you can ramp up your difficulty level to "realistic levels" for you and your troops or play as a more epic hero able to take much damage before falling.  The game is in a class of its own.  The focus is on horsed combat, but you can also choose to fight unhorsed.  You can fight with a variety of different weapons including various ranged weaponry.  There are also castle and town siege warfare and numerous quests.  I think the true genius of the game is that it is highly moddable.  In the past they've had some fantastic mods.  Unfortunately all the beta versions are not backwards compatible so you'll have to download older version to play some of the mods.  The good news is they're are out of their beta phase so I expect their modding community to be more stable from now on.  There are a couple I can't wait to play once they port them up to the newest version.
