Upgrades for a Fee

MalianeaMalianea Member Posts: 314

I just finished reading: http://www.gamergod.com/article_display.cfm?article_id=103 and it makes me wonder. Is this going to be a growing trend in MMO's? I dislike the thought of there being haves and have nots in these games myself.

It's not anything that will make your character better for one, and two it's an extra 3 bucks? If you feel it's neccesary to have all that, then I doubt an extra $3 a month will stop you.

The choice is entirely up to the user.  I find the standard items/features that come with no additional cost are significant enough that I may not need or want the additional expense.

I think there is a growing trend in the MMO industry, and its competition thats driving it, to offer new and "exciting" features to the user.  Some will be already covered in your monthly subscription, some will not.  This may not be fair to some people and as you have stated there will be "haves and have nots", but what may happen is that future MMO's simply raise there monthly subscription by $3 and offer you the whole package, whether you use it or not.

Personally, I kind of like the options, and if I want them I know its going to cost me $X more, but in the end I think we will all find that we are paying for them.... like it or not, and whether we use them or not.

I would like to think in time a competitive product will eventually offer the same package at a lower cost.  If the game is good and people go there then the marketting will change. Really the power is in our hands if enough people pay the additional expense there is no drive for SOE to change.  People forget that $3 here and $2 there add up and eventually your paying $20 to $25 per month.  Then there will really be have's and have nots.

Actually, the more I think about it, the better I like this idea.  I mean, it's better than them just rolling the $3.00 into the monthly fee and giving you these items for "free".  At least if you have no interest in them, you don't have to pay for them.

yes, all great ideas. you get the basic stuff, and if you want the extra crap you pay for it. doesnt make any sense to add it in the price if you dont want to use the extras. much easier, it makes just about everyone happy, the ones that dont want it dont have to have and the ones that do, only pay .99 for each one...and if you cant afford .99 you probably shouldnt be playing.

Well, i am fine with the old methods, but i am alittle bit curious as what is going to happen to the eq2 fansites that list all the loot, are they going to no longer be allowed?

I couldn't agree with you more. This is just the way I saw it as well. And if they are features you will use its what? The cost of a drink at a coffie house, or just a little more then a gallon of gas (if you live in socal). Its not anything I would feel bad about spended as any of us could easly squonder that much without even trying.

I wonder why people aren't focusing on the entire article here?

Why has no one mentioned the free additional services that EQ has added in?

These services are nice and far beyond the features offered on any other MMORPG out there.

In case you skimmed over this part of the article, EQ is offering the following at no additional cost:

Every guild will receive a free website.

Each Guild site will include for free:

A roster that updates automatically from the game itself including; guild ranking, character name, class, etc. It will be everything a guild could want in a roster.

Each guild will receive a customized domain name; something like Yourguild.EQ2guilds.com.

You will not have to be an artist to spruce up your site ... wait, spruce it up? Yes! It will allow customization and layout options of your choice! You can choose the layout what you want to go where, a number of art features and if you are not good at art yourself, no problem. There is also an art tool built-in with many features, allowing you to make your site perfect for your guild.

Guild leaders have no fear. They thought of you too!

You can give powers to your officers or members, decide who can edit and see what and even assign jobs to teams if you wish. Want one person to update news? Go ahead, assign it. Want one person to moderate? NO problem. It's all part of this new free system.

Players weren't forgotten either. Have your own character generated onto a paper-doll page with your name and information. Even load up an image of you in game doing whatever you wish.

In my opinion SOE deserves more gratitude than gripe for these features and for making available additional enhancements to players! Nice job SOE!
