I went to gamestop yesterday to see if there was anything worth playing that I haven't already played. There was an older guy by the PC games wearing a shirt with the Failcom logo on it lol was funny as hell. Went over to em and asked if he played AoC. He said "Yeah, I played that POS". I asked what he thought about the new game director. Oddly enough he hadn't heard about it. Niether did the kid working there at the moment.
Funny part was I saw someone with a Failcom shirt in gamestop lol
Sad part was it seems some people that gave up on AoC aren't even following it anymore.
So it made me wonder if Funcom has any commercials or anything planned to let people know that Gaute's out and Chris is in. Seems a lot of my friends that use to play didn't even know. Just a thought.
Comments
whats exactly has chris done that gaute hadnt? How has the game "improved"? And I dont mean TALK about FUTURE plans I mean improved NOW. Im truly curious.
I dont think letting people know that Gaute is out and Morris is in, means anything or would mean anything.
What Funcom has to do is scrap their original game plan for game mechanics and introduce bold new mechanics that actually work. They need to fire their entire marketing staff, pour that money into development, then keep patching, patching hard and long, until they have the game they promised, then keep improving, adding new things weekly or at least monthly, then let word of mouth spread, but right now no news is the best news for funcom outside of their forums.
They just need to shut up about whats coming and deliver it. That is the only thing that matters when it comes to end product, customers and producers. Those that actually deliver what they produce get the money, because they have value. Those that put a lot of effort in but don't deliver get tossed to the wayside.
Funcom needs to get smart to that.
Patch 2.0. Which basically have changed everything on so many levels that I woun't attempt to explain. You should read about it so you can join in on the discussions about the game too.

I think most of 2.0 was probably done before GG left.
The only thing the new guy has done so far is talk more honestly about the state of the game and not keep refering to 'the great launch' every other sentence. He also is the first to talk about server mergers, the thing the games needs most, but has since backtracked a bit on that issue.
I don't think they're delaying patches as a "hype" tactic. They have nothing to gain from holding back on fixes and improvements to the game, if anything they would be working as hard as they could to get those improvements out to stop the bleeding of subscriptions and to interest new players (or returning old ones) before the WotLK expansion rears it's head.
Instead I think they're focusing on only releasing these patches when they're sure the stuff they're supposed to fix has actually been fixed. Previously they released patches hazzardously without giving their QA team (or Testlive users) the necessary time to actually test the changes, resulting in patches that broke as much as they fixed, but now they seem to do.
Patch 2.0 was heads and tails beyond any of their previous patches (possible exception being the "miracle patch" just before launch which actually made it possible to play) when it comes to quality, hopefully the same can be said about patch 3 when that hits live after this weekend.
I think the simple solution to server transfers would be to quit your guild and abandon the Keep. The question is how many people would be willing to do that?
Waiting for the next thing

Patch 2.0 did NOT change the game on many levels. In fact, it changed almost nothing at the foundational level of the game. It did improve stability, add a very small amount of content, and added half of the PvP "system" (a rep grind), among a few other tweaks. Nothing earthshaking at all, and I'm saddened every time someone tries to pass it off as something more to the gaming community.
More than that, that patch came out at almost the exact same time that Gaute Godager left, and Craig Morrison came in. I'm assuming that means that the entire patch was developed under Godager, not Morrison.
So far, nothing of substance has been released on Morrison's watch, though he has attemped some better communication, which was sorely needed. He's also made a lot more promises on the future direction of the game.
Until the next set of content moves from testlive to the live servers, given FC's trademarking of the phrase "coming soon", it's all an unrealized future.
Hell hath no fury like an MMORPG player scorned.
I would call it healthy.
He who fights with monsters might take care lest he thereby become a monster. And if you gaze for long into an abyss, the abyss gazes also into you.

The point of that statement was to say those they are trying to bring back havent a clue about what FC is doing to bring them back lol. So is it all for naught or do they have some campaing planned to inform those that do not visit the official forums or here about the changes made and being made.
I truly hope you weren't serious in that post. You obviously have no idea what it is like to create big improvements in a game. Hell I am not even following AOC or interested in it but you cracked me up.
For the record its Craig, not Chris The new G.D has done numerous magazine and online website interviews over the past few weeks.
The game does not need a commerical for the sole fact of changing of game directors, its happens all the time in the industry.
In the short term future the game will speak for itself, they have said a welcome back but "free" will most likely happen when they feel right.
Now you told your friends they know and can check it out if they wish, word of mouth is better and FC hope proof will be in the pudding when they send out the invite back emails with free time.
Being patient and doing the necessary updates is the right way to go and unlike some people in this thread who think they are the game director and pose a couple of questions which don't happen their whole world collapses. Such a shame. (not you mr Ghost)

Thanks as always Avery, I will have to remember that lol Craig* not chris lol. But yeah sounds good and you are correct word of mouth is pretty much the best form of advertising now days. So all in all that answers what I asked so thank you again.
Word-of-mouth is not enough to save AoC. They need MARKETING and lots of it. People got burned once by FC, you really think the masses will come back because of some positive word-of-mouth? Please..
People do this mistake all the time in business. They concentrate on the product and think people will come buy it without any marketing. They don't. Once you disappoint your customers, like FC did, it's really difficult to get them back.
Their best chance is tons of marketing and a trial. Not some weak forum word-of-mouth. Most people never visit these forums and couldn't care less what fanbois and trolls have to say.
Actually word of mouth is considerd one of the best forms of Advertising. Comercials are rarely watched on TV or listend to on the radio. Bill Boards are widely ignored. Obscure spokespeople are rarely believable to most. The best form of Advertising a company/Product could ever have is someone you know telling you about it and talking about it positively.
i think some people ignore the fact that it will still be a funcom game. you dont get raped and beaten (or the other way around for some of the kinkier guys) by someone and then hear they went to rehad and decide everything is fkn cool. they crapped in the face of THOUSANDS of gamers, they are 100% right not to care what happens with that "POS".
the smart people knew not to care about the "POS" to begin with, so few these days are impervious to hype.
Yeah, I know. I'm studying MBA in Marketing.
You fail to see my point. I didn't say word-of-mouth sucks. On the contrary, it's probably the most important aspect of marketing in the world of MMO's.
I'm just saying in FC's situation it's not enough. They had their chance but they blew it. Gamers listened their lies and hype once, you think they will listen the same stories again from current players and re-subscribe? Doesn't matter if it's true or not this time, people have already moved on. FC needs to do some serious, agressive marketing if they want to survive. And I'm not talking about TV ads.
How good was their marketing to begin with? got you to play didn't it? Also has still got you interested. With regards to TV ad's they never had any, apart from a couple of stints on gametrailers tv on Spike and some on Space channel from some conventions months before launch plus the G4 stuff. Those weren't even paid for either. Your not going to see Ad's for North American from Finland or potential ad's from all the different language territories that AoC supports, let alone the whole PC Gamer N.A. AoC magazine for Fall '08 special.
By their own admission, they will do something when they feel the time is right to introduce more people back both new and old. Garriot once said that per mmo game they lose 90k customers per 9 months but at the same time new people are in to replace the old ones. EQ 2 had many players at one time which dropped right down only to grow again to previous levels without any major marketing.
FC looks to have now taken a more honest approach, in doing so it will raise the curiousity of players such as yourself (thats 3 new people I've seen from Oulu past 10 days now) even though you feel they "blew it". When it all comes to head and they think they have a product which is more inviting then it will be word of mouth which will either drive it forward or break it more, aggressive marketing is such a small percentage in this factor. Lookl at all the dislike for AoC ads on this site posts the past months.
As previously said when they are more confident in addressing issues and rounding their product more they will let us know and when that time comes it's the words that come from the experiences that will give the most accurate portrayal and watching for increase in playerbase.
Im guessing for some people like the gamestop guy and yourself it all depends on when you played and for how long in conjunction with your likes or dislikes in game and whats happened their. The core game will be the same but cleaned up properly just like we saw with AO.
Thats all a matter of perspective isn't it When you "unfortunately" roll on a not so populated server such as you have one can see where the bitterness comes from. It's not fair and i do get your point in that regard/. To say its all over the place is misinformed.
Pres Bush also served two terms in office.
When your running around on the test server you can see where the GD is coming from. There is plenty of literature out there that covers 75% of your concerns if its not good enough for you why tollerate it? cancel your sub and if you are interested still in the future check it out again.
State of the game article asking guilds should be out early next week. its not all roses but its not what you make it out to be.
First of all thanks for your comments, i did do a little edit whilst you was replying to the post.
I have to say that Funcom offer a duplicator too for the test server, its a quick download and clones your AoC folder for the test server all that is left is the patches to it, which right now would be about an hours worth at a 5mb connection -ish. They offer the server not out of neccessity, they are not charging you for it. Its the same as other games such as WoW in this area. You want to see how the patches play on your character copy it over and test it out. Its really simple and gives you a least a couple of months ahead insight into whats coming. There is no 11 GB DL. My Live server file is 22.9gb and test server 24gb just. The cloning took a little while but it does it itself.
The new article which should be out soon has a Q&A with a guild from tyranny whose thoughts contradict your own somewhat.
You see we can only speak about each of our experiences with the game - hence the gamespot guys with Failcom tops on. Its all about your own perspective and to some degree (but not all) its limited down to your choice of server, the community and population on there specific.
My guild launched with over 400 members, it went down to 300, then up 50 then down to 200 then up 100. It mirrors about 4 other guild on my main server. Guild management tools are needed your right, but it is and shown to be mangeable ok in a not so perfect way. When you can only field so many in a siege you have to think a little to the direction you go. in beta you really think there were half a million people? I think your perspective is slanted in order to conform to your own ideals and support them which are only half truths and exagerration.
Why would one torrelate such behaviour from an mmo company for 5 whole months? For someone who continued to pay for that long there must be something good there surely?
As players we decide if the company is worth paying depending on your feelings. If you feel its not worth playing and have to come here to tell us why to somehow make things ok, then tell us why you subbed for nearly half a year. The smart man would have the foresight to put the "service on hold" for a while and keep tabs on it - aka Mack. For some of us the progression of patches has been good on the whole, honest from FC in terms of rolling them out (the average being bi-weekly from the day it went like that to present has been just that) in terms of content and fixes, fixes come first then content. DX 10 was said before launch would be showing of end of August at shows and it did, did it not, one would assume its still away off based on the logic there. As the major things got fixed up till mid August, more resources could be put into content side of things - such as 41 plus voice over additions (one big gripe from players who just played one month) Beefed up Black Castle, Pyramid of Ancients and Tarantia Sewers plus Raids. August also saw the month for me when Sieges were bearable. Moving on there were more quests added in to the level area where people said it was short. Finally leading up to one half of PvP patch that went in with rest to follow which has had the same timeframe for fixes as 2.0. Plus a Whole new Zone. Then Dx10 will come along with half a dozen new dungeons before xmas and even more content.
So for people who walk around at gamespot with failcom logo's on not knowing the past from the future or even the present - its a shame as specifically their issues could of been resolved.
I do have to ask though - why the second account?
I'll save the rest of comments for forth coming article.

I rolled on Haunman. That server died. I watched the population go, I noticed it, I measured it then I looked for a new place for my guild to go because I knew it was going to flop. I checked out Tyranny but I didn't leave because it was populated.
I loved PVP, I loved populated action. I didn't leave because of that at all. I left because Funcom is charging me money but not giving me the ability to run a guild without it being self destructed. I left because they kept promising things, and not delivering. They kept delivering what they did, but at a pace way to slow.
Funcom isn't landing on the fucking moon, AOC should be finishable in less than a decade, but their pace is way to slow for a monthly fee to be tacked onto gameplay. Simple as that. They also refuse to listen to, or welcome commentary from their playerbase.
I'm not running around the test server. Neither is 75% of the player base. 500,000 subscribers expected the game to be tested adaquately before launch. There was a fucking beta what were they doing then? How about when the fact that the game has been in development since like 2004, 05, 06, 07 half of 2008? You are telling me they didn't know they needed to fix what they are testing now on testlive before launch? I have 1 TB or storage but I'm not going to spend half of the day downloading 11 gigabytes to sit next to the 30 gigabytes I've already got devoted to AOC. Forget that. I'm all for improving the game but they are unwilling to read the suggestion forum where all 100 of my suggestions are. If they were unwilling to read my support@aoc emails forget that. Why should I pay, to test their game? You see there is a fundamental misunderstanding at funcom of what they are. They are supposed to be a software developer. Not a marketing firm. They need to do testing sure, but they are charging their own consumers to give feedback, and for what, so they will ignore it? Are we at war with Funcom? Maybe we should be.
If it is intolerable enough why not cancel? I did. But that doesn't take away my right to talk about the game, unless it involves talking about it on the AOC forums, because they won't allow me to offer any more feedback or suggestions or input at all.
Even if I was going to do it after I quit the overwhelming majority of commentary would be negative because their execution has been dismal, disasapointing, and disastrous for them, for us, for the game, hell for MMO's in general. Funcom gives MMO's a bad name.
It isn't roses at all. There is nothing rosy about the game its past or future. Avery you can stay but I left after my guild mostly quit due to population declines. I had a guild go from 650 active characters to just under 200 characters total. Less than 100 active. Other guilds quit completely and went to WAR or just quit. The way you frame it, that never happened? Funcom never failed to deliver?
All in all what can they do at this point? They messed up, we know it they know it and it atleast seems like there trying to fix it. It may be slower than we like but atleast they are atempting it. If you can't handle it the way things are and do not like the way things are going there really is only one thing you can do quit and move on, check back in a few months and see if anything has changed to your liking.
As far as Avery goes I read the post you replied to and I don't see where you get that he framed it in a way that says it never happend. That Funcom Never deliverd. He actualy is one of the few that enjoys the game that will atempt to remain objective. So take what he says as you will be he isn't the viral marketeer you just tried to make him out to be.
As for the rest of the post, Dude it is just a game, a form of entertainment. They aren't going to refund your money so there really isn't a point to getting that worked up. My advice is to try and remain objective yourself, while AoC has a realy bad start the future does look a bit better. What ever happens we will have to wait and see. But it really has upset in the least then just put it out of your head and check back in a few months or just give up on it all together. When your entertainment starts raising your blood pressure then theres a problem lol. Not picking on you just trying to add a bit of humor.

We are all fellow games and there is nothing wrong in sharing opinons. It's my opinon in that in order to know where you are going to have to know where you have come from. With this in mind I would also like to expand a little by agreeing that the start of AoC was not what I expected it to be - far from it - but I do have the capacity to acknowledge that something is being done about it more so now that at any time - even if it is at a slowe pace that one would like - its the goal that is important and being on the right track and thats what I feel FC is now on.
Pointing out a few differences by word of mouth (from the past) and current situation to those that felt the game was such an upset to their life that they had to get jerseys made up in gamespot could quite possibly raise an eyebrow and an "oh really" comment.
They screwed up and now they are trying to make right the wrong's. I have even related the fact they should be more honest moving forward which got the "we are in agreement" response.
Yes, FC screwed up and yes they are slowly attempting to fix their problem. However, with that said, I don't believe players should "Pay" a monthly fee in order to help beta-test this game.
Will I come back eventually and see for myself the eventual improvements to AOC? Yes, of course I will but only at a time when the game is in a fun, playable state(in my opinion) and only when FC decides to give all the players who have quit the game, a free play period of 1 or 2 months.
Oh, and Avery, earlier you stated that Pres. Bush had 2 terms in office as to the reason that Bush has a better satisfaction rating than FC. Well, FC also has had 2 terms in office. The first term was with AC and AoC is their second term.
IMO, AoC is fighting a battle against the clock. Providing that FC is indeed now subsidized by their government and that cash flow really isnt an factor at this time, AoC also has to contend with other MMOs being released. Also, what makes a player dedicated to a MMO? That answer is a bonding with their character as well as solid ingame friendships. Each of these requires a significant amount of time ingame. If a player decides to resubscribe to AoC after FC states that the game is now in proper working order and has plenty of content, it will still take a few months for each player to become bonded with their ingame character as well as their circle of ingame friends. If, at this time, new MMOs are being released, it will be very difficult to retain these players who resubscribed, as they will most likely head to the newly released MMOs.
Like someone else posted, if a company loses a customer than it is hard as hell to get them back and even then the customer loyality is never as great as it could have been.

While I am far from being an AoC hater, I must admit the idea of someone sporting a Failcom jersey around made me chuckle. That's some serious anti-company sentiment right there, so whatever floats their respective boats.
For me, I came into the office one day and saw a few Failcom logos as screensavers/wallpapers when passing through the sales department. That can't top the jersey's however, that's dedication.
and a lot of free time...
Found this from a thread further down. I guess that's the shirt in question?

At the end of the day, it's still Funcom. They still charge money for free trials, and they still let volunteer monkeys run roughshod over their forums, among other failed policies (the words "questioning moderation" come to mind).
Gameplay wasn't the reason I quit AoC. I quit AoC because the company at large did not comprehend MMOs or customer service in general.

They should sell those online.
While I am not much anti FC as I was when I canceld I have thought about getting one myself, simply for the fact I think it's funny like I did with the Make 7...........Up yours shirts. Would be a great buisness decision at this point if FC started selling Funcom Shirts and Failcom shirts on there main site. One it would show a bit of humor by the company and a bit of humility and two they could cash in on it lol.
The thing FC need s to fix and fix right is make the game truly playable for players that meet and exceed the Requirements and recommended ones to play the game. Thats what made me leave the game no matter how many setting i tweaked and retweaked with every patch it would become unplayable. If they were to fix those issues AOC would have very high sub numbers and then there would have not been a metion of server merges this early in the games life.
