I have gone back to UO after several times quiting. I'm still playing it, because it's simply the only fantasy based sandbox/worldly game, even in the sad state it's in. I just can't stand to be herded around by a ring in my nose like these other games do to you.

Sadly EA seem to not want to sink any marketing into the game , in its current state UOKR is 100x better than it first release , bug fixes and patches to make the game better are coming in fast , the next expansion if released as stated last year ( not sure if will) sounds to be real cool gargoyle races , new skills , also sems based on the ULTIMA Stygian Abyss story line..

If you dont play and would like something added or fixed to make you comeback post it here:

UOKR is a strange mixture of great and very ugly. It works good as far as controls and all that, and most of the static art is fantastic, the buidlings and architecture, the trees and ground, etc.

But the characters are extremely ugly and unattractive. Their legs are way too long, the grayness of the avatars and undefined shadowy look just looks terrible. Pictures I see of avatars riding llamas make me laugh with their feet on the ground like a little kid on a horsey on wheels. Many of the items placed on the ground are overly large and ugly too. Some of it looks worse than cartoony in effect. Did they add backpacks in the gump art yet? They seem to be trying to loose the fantastic feel that was UO, what, for the Chinese market? (Yeah, I know they say they are trying to keep that UO feel, but if so they are failing miserably)

The movements too leave allot to be desired. They aren't trying to make the game better, they are trying to slide sideways to a different form. Screw that.

    Once upon a time....

Ya, but I don't think it could be as great as when the servers were loaded with people and death was all around.

But a popular pre-trammel, classic server is what would do it for me.

Me too. That would make things very interesting :) And they should lower the price back down to $9.99 a month.

I loved UO.. played it the longest of any MMO I've played and that's most of them.

Anyway short answer is.. I doubt you would ever see a pre-trammel shard by EA regardless of what resources they put into the game.

Unfortunately the people who just want to pvp for a challenge are transparant compared to those that want to make as many 'care bears' quit as possible.  When the subs started to bleed out you saw the results..

    Stat Loss

    Murder System

    Trammel etc

Of course they did all those things to late or in general "the wrong way" but it was pretty obvious when people started to leave and in great number.. and why they left.

*I* personally miss that PvP becuase it was based  on knowing the game rather than surfing the zerg to earn Iwin buttons (daoc) or getting the uber god mode gear.

Someone who understood the game could take out 20 people who didn't... and I really miss that.

Altho I will admit I used to spend time at west bank stealing from people on the roof myself... I'm sure that didn't help population much either.  /sigh

My guild "The Mafia" started out as a bunch of teenagers in highschool playing a "MMO" for the first time.  Most of us started in beta and loved it since we were fans of the Single Player Ultima series RPG's.  Upon release, we played on Pacific having joined up with LoD (Lords of Death) and eventually split ways and formed The Mafia or [TM].

Nothing will ever beat the Pre-Trammel, Dread Lord/Great Lord days of UO.  We're no longer teenagers as most of us have graduated, become professionals and start families.  However, whenever we get the chance to have a BBQ or a gathering, we'll always reminisce about the days we spent playing UO.

We were hardcore PvP'ers and PKer's.  The thrill of combat, of hunting, of being counter hunted provided such an adrenaline rush that hasn't been matched by any other game to this day.  Although I've never done any myself, a few of the guys who used to experiment with drugs, likened it to "chasing your first high".  Every MMO we played afterward (and we played em all and even 2 of us ended up getting hired by Blizzard as coders/devs) was an attempt to "chase that first high".

Even after the PK days of dreadlords/great lords were over, the guild PvP system was fantastic and managed to reign in some of the PK'ers into more sanctioned warfare.  There was nothing like camping the keep of your rival guild in hopes of stealing his runes/keys.  We miss the epic wars as many of our guilds would fight for "turf".  Our turf was Moonglow, Brit Cemetary and East Brit Bank.  I still fondly remember sending out mass ICQ messages (that's oldschool AIM people) to my guildmates to rally them for some action against our hated rivals (KGB, PoA).  The PvP was fierce.  It was skill based and tactical.  It provided some great risk/reward scenarios.

The freedom, the open endedness, the danger, were all things that made the game so enjoyable.  UO effectively died the day Trammel was released.

I'd give up a kidney to be able to go back in time and convince OSI not to release trammel.  Then again, I wouldn't be a successful lawyer today as a result and would probably be stuck sharing an appartment with a buddy, playing the game 24/7. =P

In any case, UO Pre-Trammel was the best MMO to have ever been released.  I get upset just thinking about how it had to end.

Sorry to interrupt, but are you Ranker the 50 French NO that xfered from Blackbeard to Rackham? With the Society named Mafia, and your name TM_Ranker (Same as your POTBS forum account) it seems so.

Currently restarting World of Warcraft :/

    Pre-AOS for me.

I think they messed with a working formula when they brought out the new skills and diferent magical properties of metals and armor.  Then the loot from Doom.  Ugghhhh

Its funny how happy I was with just the simple things.  I always wanted to have a big house and got an 18*18 when AoS came out but its gone after I wound up not enjoying the game anymore and quitting.  I'd gladly live out of the Inns and friends houses again for pre-AOS.

The thing is UO is outdated with high monthly fees. For a game that is so cheap to run and update it does not need a fee so high. Also it doesn't help the fact that there is 100's of private servers where players go to play for free and get classic if they want.

They need to just make this free to play, it is old and outdated. The game is not something easily learned either by new players and may seem to bulky and as said outdated. They probably don't draw many new customers.

If it was free to play but had ads enabled in game and when you log in then it may help them make more money then what they make now charging old players.

Who let you in the VIP section?

  • obiiobii Member UncommonPosts: 804

    Too expensive...

Hmm maybe because my €13 convert to $20 and I surely will not pay EA that much.

Such an old gamw with such a high fee ... but hey they still have 100.000 accounts, so good for them.

I just looked for a freeshard and will wait and see what EA does.

I'd definitely, definitely return for a pre UO:R shard.

  • pkSlaydepkSlayde Member Posts: 82

Let Them HATE, so long as they FEAR

UO needs to drop crap expansions. Fuck trammel. That shit should never had been made. So yes. We clearly need a pre- EA shard.

I'm sure they have the old scripts hidden somewhere. Quite honestly idiotic that they don't do it. I half play on a T2A freeshard that had 1200 people on nightly back in January-February.. It was a bit mismanaged and a lot of people have left since cause of stupid changes (that ended up being reverted). In Por Ylem (IPY) had the same numbers 3-4 years ago and was a blast.

Just saying, with a company like EA I'm positive they could turn a profit on it. Maybe they're just slowly phasing UO out since it isn't a big moneymaker anymore... Anyways.

    Instahit.

    Order/Chaos.

    Heal through poison.

    Med warriors.

    Townies.

    Tank Mages.

    Good times.

Blah.... hoping that Darkfall comes out finally. Just came across Mortal Online, that may be good too.

get me pre trammel, and updated graphics ( dont gota be SWEET) imo a game that can run on most PCs with low polys is much better than a game thats life like and only 20 people play it...i played back in 97 was my first and best mmo ever.

  • minrathminrath Member Posts: 63

You left out the option of never returning..I myself would never return to uo or any other EA game.Their history is even shadier then sony's, just look at how they abrutly ended motor city online with no warning when they saw it fail due to bad management, and yet they didnt learn anything. They keep putting incompetants in charge of design and everything else, and it has ruined them as a company.

My general idea for reasons players dont like UO is...

    1.Graphics ( outdated)
    2.To items based
    3. lack of classic shard ( time frame  pre Age of Shadows)

    Any thoughts??

Yeah I wont be going back especialy with DarkFall so close. I played for 9 years since launch and I didn't enjoy the creation of Trammel, insurance, Ninja's and samurai, 3rd dawn, Item based combat, KR, the black thorn thing -.- and lastly I didn't like EA. I think KR was the final straw for me though.

But UO will always hold a place in my heart. It was my first MMORPG and my favorite. Since DarkFall has pretty much every thing I liked about UO and none of the things I didn't  and does it all with updated graphics and UI once it launches I found my new home which will be this year.

hmmm...im still considering these. i really cant help trying to return in this game, but i lack of money and time. i enjoy playing other MMO games.

  • TankraideTankraide Member Posts: 27

Yeah gimme Dread Lord (red) Great Lord (blue) and Grey status ( Pre Karma BS ) and a Pre Church Fundamentalist EA Director who never tought UO was a game where i was allowed to murder and steal thousands of people and house because he probably got murdered on his first day playing and let me just play how i want to and im singing in for 25 a month

The problem with the Classic shard is what time period would be best?

Some say pre publish 16 , pre AOS , ect....

Pre AOS for sure, so we could go to back to the old item days of Vanquishing, or Power etc. Much better than the Luck and stats crap plastered over everything now with all the silly colours. The old system was a much better fit for the medieval feel of UO, not to mention it was just more appealing and immersion than the system introduced with AOS.
