aging mercs?

i heard that mercs can be fired or they can retire due to old age. but how do they age? i just hired an monk last week but it's already as old (27) as my main (29).
and as they age, do their skills decrease in effect or something?

their isnt much known about the age of your mercs except when they become indepedent they will stop sending you items when their 60 years old. (independence can be declare when they are level 100 and have no items on them at all including eqs)
So a mercenary's retirement will depend actually on the level not their age? Hmm... So, it'll be a long time before a mercenary will retire...
it doesnt depend on their level because indepence is a chosen thing. it isnt automaticly given (this is done through a NPC called fugger near lisbon) but other than that i'm not sure if when they hit age 60 their retried or not
