You may have heard it from one or two that have been able to claim one or two or the above, but not since Blizzard made WoW has there been a company with the ability to really do it (and in my opinion, Bioware has much more potential to succeed than Blizzard did, but the market's a different place now, so we will see).

Bioware is no longer the Bioware of old. EA execs now make the decisions. Just look at WAR. Mythic would've never created this dumbed down WOW game. EA Mythic would, though, just like EA Bioware is going to make another dumbed down game.

I don't buy this at all. Their track record has been pretty good. And their current project, Dragon Age looks amazing. I think SW TOR will be a good MMO.

    WAR

SWG (I'm going to fix this for you)  SWG NGE
    LOTRO
All these mmo's have been made with a huge budget  + one of them has a huge I.P and a big publisher . I am speaking about WAR.
It is laughable to say it is gonna be a WOW killer. Many have said that,  all failed.
There are so many more elements that defind if you can be successful or not.
EA and LA only see $$ . There can be elements that can go wrong like time and how they build there game. It is not only money that makes a good game.

The reason I fixed SWG for you is it came out before WoW.  The biggest North American MMO subscription wise was still EQ1 (yes the asian based companies had MMO's with larger sub bases).  SWG was in the second position at the time.

After WoW came out and got the big sub numbers.. then it was deemed SWG was a failure.

So on that part I kind of see a lack of logic.. you couldn't create a WoW killer when... WoW didn't exist.  The NGE was an attempt at turning an existing game into an aborted version of WoW (I'd agree with that).

IP... The main thing most people seem to miss (especially these companies that dream up what their sub numbers will be based on IP) is what the IP was.

What was Star Wars... oh ya movies and books.  Oh and a bunch of really crappy computer games that didn't do well.  Except for a few of them (xwing/tie fighter, kotor and the other one I can never remember.. but there was a bin full of failed RTS (mostly) star wars games).

Lotro again was a book... then a really bad cartoon.. then a movie.  With a few computer games that didn't do that well.

AoC again... books.. comics.. eventually a movie

WAR table top game system... etc etc

What was warcraft.. oh ya a computer game series.

Its much easier to flip an IP that is already established in electronic media..  Most of my relatives that I saw Star Wars with (that would be what we call ep4 now) are in their 70's and never have owned a computer.  They loved the movies at the time.

    So ya IP isn't everything.

Plus now everyone thinks a popular IP should have 5 to 10 million subs.. and if it doesn't it failed.  (at least execs at the corps are thinking that way).

That doesn't mean a thing. Age of conan had plenty of hype in the mmorpg genre. What did it become of?  I.P does not mean automatic a big success. You think companies think that they should have this or that. What do u know of that?

An intelligent company doesn't automatic says WOW killer or that it will be a huge succes. They can guess but it's still a guess and theres still risk.

Everyone knows LOTRO. Oh it's a book. Oh yeah books..... Just look at the harry potter books. Books are books yeah but they can be really populair.  The movies where a great success and i don't think movie games fail directly , they still attract a huge group. Even if the game is shitty , the game can still sell.

The problem with the Star wars franschise is that it's getting old. How much people who watched the films play games?  If they do play games, how much are willing to spend 15 bucks a month for an mmo?  Sorry but it's not that easy to get millions of subs. WOW is not just blizzard and I.P , it is much more. You think you get millions by having a huge I.P That sir, is a joke and a fantasy story. There is MUCH more to come if you want a really successful product.

The problem is you have 2 idiotic companies with a wrong mindset. They think that it works but watch and see. They really expect more then 10 million. I laugh at that mate.

Even paul barnett isn't stupid to say. I even start to think EA thought with buying Mythic that they could have more subs then WOW or even close but guess what. None have come close.

Blizzard is popular in asia. Star wars????????

Bioware, no matter how goodf there game is , is not simple a game that will have millions of subs. It can but i doubt. It will mostly be a niche and i mean a niche 100-1 million subscribers. Which is still a giant success and the STANDARD NORM of the mmorpg genre BUT it is a niche compared to WOW.

Metacritic scores mean very little because most "professional" video game reviewers are idiots.

The only thing that needs to said on Metacritic is that they have Age of Conan at 80%.

Bioware's past achievements also amounts to nothing because even though the game will be made by Bioware it will be controlled by EA and Lucas Arts. Two of the greediest and dumbest companies possible.

There will be a lot of subscribers that is for sure(it is a Star Wars game after all and they sell no matter what the quality is) but "killing WoW" is the impossible dream.

People, seriously, EA and LA are not going to ruin Bioware's vision. For one thing, Bioware has already proven that they can work with LA and make a successful game. EA has also proven that they still have good games in them (Dead Space is supposed to be great, Spore, Crysis).

Also I'd like to address: "What was Star Wars... oh ya movies and books. Oh and a bunch of really crappy computer games that didn't do well. Except for a few of them (xwing/tie fighter, kotor and the other one I can never remember.. but there was a bin full of failed RTS (mostly) star wars games)."

A bunch of really crappy computer games? I'm sorry, but right away we have Xwing v. Tie, KoTOR (1 and arguably 2) , and I'm not sure what "other one" you're referring to, but there have been dozens of great star wars games. It is probably actually the single most entrenched in electronic media of all the IPs out there. The whole Jedi Knight series, Battlefront was a great shooter, the classic SNES games, I could go on. Star Wars and gaming are practically two married concepts.

It's not "was made" till it's retail.

It's just a natural progression. When SWG was licensed they said Lucasarts worked with them to pick the timeline because more games on different timelines where planned.

    No big deal...

    This was always the vision.

    What did you expect?

"The hammer of the gods will drive our ships to new lands,
To fight the horde, singing and crying: Valhalla, I am coming!
On we sweep with threshing oar, our only goal will be the western shore."

Sad to say WoW is Destroying the MMO gaming industry as its now some crappy benchmark that people hold store with, when what they should be looking at is that they have a good game and they don't need to Dumb it down to pull people from the WoW crowed, as part time WoW player myself the game has become the Fisher Price of MMO's, lets not cater to the building block crowed and make a game for the over 4's
