having fun as a newb?- mission running sucks!

Swiftblade13Swiftblade13 Member Posts: 638

Hello all,

I've played Eve a little in the past... I fly t1 cruisers (thorax) and I have toyed around a little in 0.0 with an alliance etc.

I decided I want to return to Eve, but I dont want to get into the mission grind for cash.  What are some fun ways to make money (I'm no market tycoon!) or other suggestions to help me have fun as a newbie?  I'm open to just about anything.... pirating appeals to me as does legitimate warfare.   I've tried stealing minerals but it takes hours to find one can to rob... not nearly efficient enough.  I know I can have fun with PvP etc.... but having fun always costs money... then im stuck grinding stupid missions and salvaging again!!!!

I think a big part of this is going to be finding a fun corp to join.. if you know of any let me know =)

    I'm not sure either

What I though as a newbie- well I was just happy to find a good pvp MMO at the time. So I was happy to be a vulture in 0.0. I just flew around in my destroyer and salvaged rat husks and took the loot. Heck, even though now I'm far from a noob, I still loot other people's wrecks (but now I ask first haha)

To earn my first 100 mil what I did was get my Vexor, put on some attack drones, parked it in high sec and mine. When those random NPC mine haulers popup, kill them. They usually have loot worth like 50 mil. They drop implants and othjer stuff. Darn near best loot in the game for such little work.

Just to make sure I wasn't nutz I told my newbie buddy to try that and he got a 75 mil implant drop

A few months ago I tried it again and got a 40 mil ISK faction drop

random NPC mine haulers?  I've spent a fair amount of time mining (probably 15 hours) and the only NPC's I ever saw spawn were rats...  How rarely do the haulers spawn?

    They don't spawn in highsec.

Also, Eve is not a PvE game. There is PvE content, but i'd never play Eve to see its PvE, to be honest.

Join a 0.0 alliance that actively supports newbies, get into a battlecruiser, and make a few bucks killing spawns in 0.0. Then you should get something else to make money with..trading, industry, exploration, something.

He's got the right idea.  You'll spend months pissing away time and money in pve.  0.0 is the only way to play.

Everquest 1, Star wars galaxies, City of heroes/villains, Eve, Lord of the rings, Age of Conan

I wouldn't say it's the only way to play, but tbh. the anonymity of highsec missionrunners grinding the same missions over and over scares the shit out of me. It's like hitting rats with sticks all over again.

PvE is absolutely not the selling point of Eve, it's rather a nice bonus to have when you run low on cash. Those iskies have to come from somewhere, no?

I can tell you for the most part that a lot of "PVE carebears" are in fact alts or mains of PvP pilots who are generating ISK in a safe manner by mission running. A Level 4 mission by a L4 Q18 agent in 0.6 space surrounded by more 0.5-0.6 space can generate a ton of ISK/LP with the right social skills. Then you factor in salvage and lp rewards and you can make a ton of ISK by running missions. Frankly ratting in 0.0 space ( save for the odd elite Rat spawn ) can be boring as hell.

At least with mission running you break up the monotony of killing rats by salvaging and changing fits. I would love to run missions in 0.0 space if only my alliance's outpost had the ability to hire a agent (or even Large POS's with the right structure module) to do so. Frankly though since I don't have the exploration skills I rather mission run in Empire. Sad but true, 0.0 space outside of PvP is flat out boring. So since I can generate a crap load of ISK doing level 4 missions with the right agent I stay in Empire unless I want to clone jump to 0.0 space for some PvP action.

Games I've played/tried out:WAR, LOTRO, Tabula Rasa, AoC, EQ1, EQ2, WoW, Vangaurd, FFXI, D&DO, Lineage 2, Saga Of Ryzom, EvE Online, DAoC, Guild Wars,Star Wars Galaxies, Hell Gate London, Auto Assault, Grando Espada ( AKA SoTNW ), Archlord, CoV/H, Star Trek Online, APB, Champions Online, FFXIV, Rift Online, GW2.

    Game(s) I Am Currently Playing:

    GW2 (+LoL and BF3)

Trust me, L4 missions gets no better. The only people that like them are 90% the ones that AFK them with a Domi drone boat setup

Ratting in 0.0 at least when a pirate pops into the system you can dock at yer POS / Station and switch into your pvp frig and have some fun

To be honest I AFK the rats in 0.0 but the fun part for me was breaking down the loot into the minerals and reshape it into items I could sell for a nice markup in low / nullsec

The miner spawns I speak of btw is the ones in 0.5 that sometimes drop great loot and you can AFK that. Just park your ship and leave your drones out. Not sure if the miner spawns higher then 0.5 drop decent loot. Last time I did it I think I got that faction item and before that a snake implant

Ok one mission running is the most entertianing of the ways to make money other than like pirating.

The missions do not get any better from L1-4.

They do spawn in highsec, they're just really, really, really rare.

I found a low-grade snake once from a faction spawn in a highsec belt, I found a Gist A-Type 1MN MWD worth 120 mil at the time in an anomoly site, and I've gotten best-named MLUs (twice) from hauler spawns, which for some reason go for huge amounts of ISK even though the T2 MLUs are better and aren't that hard to train for.

Of course that's all over the course of a year and a half so it's not exactly common, but you can find good loot on occassion.

Ways for newbs to make money...

    - 0.0 Ratting. 1 mil bounties each isn't bad at all

    - Lowsec, 0.0 Mining. With a hulk and decent skills you can make a good bit

    - Trading/Industry. Not for newbiews, but maybe a goal to head for

    - Missions. You say they're boring, I don't think they're too bad.

    - Contracts. Many are scams, but there's plenty of good courier ones. You just deliver a package and make some ISK. I've seen some pay 5 mil for as little as 4 high sec jumps.

lmao yes 1, and 2 are both things a  4-6 month old newb can do np. Before that be prepared to play the time game and sink your cash into the skill training system so your cash translates into the required skills necessary for said endevors.   If you get into a player corp in 00 you might be able to acomplish these things but be prepared to surrender your freedom to the "call to arms call" every time some fleet commander somewhere halfway across the world needs you.

Missions are a grind and repeat --  the same dam things over an dover.

Perhaps contracts - if you want to play contracts on line.

    lol

I like running lvl 4 missions in high sec and I use Hyperion BS for them as it is more fun when you stand to loose your ship if you are not careful and I am trying out different fighting setups all the time. I run missions for all main factions so I can choose different missions and have more fun that way. The pay is good and I also loot and salvage and either refine cheap modules and ammo or sell the more expensive ones on the market.

If you want to join 0.0 corp then be ready to loose your independence as you need to be ready to jump into your pvp ship whenever some battle commander calls for pilots to engage some enemy of your corp and usually that is everyone that is not in your corp. For young pilots it is given that you will loose your ship and modules very often in 0.0 so it will become expensive for you and as you wanted to get ISK not loose it then I think you should stick to high sec a bit longer to gather more ISK.

Two weeks for enough skills for an okay fit bc/cruiser and enough dps to break the tank of low bs spawns. If you wait a bit, you can often even use a frigate for ratting in 0.0, depending on spawns.

I was talking of haulerspawns, which i have never seen in highsec. Factionspawns on the other hand are there, i had a few in exploration.

Don't listen to those guys about fleet commander calling you to half a galxy away. They're mistake- doesn't have to be yours. Only once did I belong to an Alliance like that

You can find 0.0 Alliances that are pretty casual. You pay your little rent and they do the fightin'. And then you can assist if you want. myself, I do small roaming gang pvp, gate camps to secure our space, and scouting. That is my contribution to keeping the space secure.

I still fly interceptors which can be replaced in like 1 hour of ratting or few mins of trading [edit- it doesnt take a whole hour of ratting to replace a t2 frig. Hard to pinpoint how long it should take. Maybe only 10-20 mins depending on bounties etc]

Also, you do not need to be a Veteran to be a half decent Trader. I do trading on my 0 SKill SP alt. 0 skills. I think I only gave her 1 mil begining capital. My alt has bout 7 mil in her wallet and thats after I took my cut on my main. No where near a Billion/Trillion ISK, but can easily replace t2 frigates. And thats why I lfy

I've never ever lost a covert ops frig. PVP can be cheap but it gets costly if you want to fly T2 Cruisers and from there on up. Or if you put rigs, etc on the t2 frigs.

Now fleet battles might get costly but I dont do those.

Good alliances run ship replacement programs.
