World of Warcraft: Wintergrasp PvP Region Overview

SzarkSzark News ManagerMember Posts: 4,420

The folks at Blizzard have posted a preview of Wintergrasp, the new Open PvP region coming in the Wrath of the Lich King expansion for World of Warcraft.

Overlooking the frozen plains of the Great Dragonblight and the inhospitable wastes of Borean Tundra lies a region known to the denizens of Northrend as Wintergrasp. Seated atop a high plateau, Wintergrasp has remained undisturbed for ages, its icy winds howling unheard amongst the ancient titan fortifications that dot the landscape. However, the recent arrival of Horde and Alliance forces in Northrend signals the end of Wintergrasp's long and peaceful slumber, for the clash of iron and the sound of battle will soon drown out the ruins' silent song of solitude.

An abundance of elemental materials and its strategically important titan fortifications are making Wintergrasp the focus of a vicious tug-of-war between the Horde and the Alliance. Much is at stake, and both sides are beginning once again to field various kinds of war machines ranging from catapults to steam-powered siege engines. Read on to learn more about the nature and unique challenges of this new field of battle, and arm yourself with knowledge to guide you when Horde and Alliance clash among the ancient ruins of Wintergrasp.

Looks cool, but its to bad (IMO) that WoW PvP is pointless and stupid, and horribly broken for any kind of true competition to happen.

Personally i think it will be fun. The main reason is there something to actually fight for if you read it all the way through. It s not just for honor. Honestly it s better then WAR or AOC rvr/pvp as it stands, we ll have to see how it pans out first.

As long as the reward is better gear and weapons, trust me, alot of players will play. Also dont forget, somethings its just for the fun of a large scale battle.....

Ultimately  there's no games that what a players do will have lasting effect on the world... /sad

....anyone thinking this blows away or even really competes with constant open warfare in WAR (when people show up) are ... quite frankly mistaken.  This is nothing but a 45 min resetting battleground in which you have to be of specific ranks to even USE the siege weapons?! I mean come on...I can by any siege weapon I want and go place it to bombard people as long as i'm in the right tier or higher.   Atleast in WAR i can wander the lakes with a group of friends take a few objectives causing the other realm's more active guilds to take action.

I thought Lake Wintergrasp would finally be a step in the right direction for Siege / Open Warfare in Warcraft but...its just making 45 mins of rinse and repeat with a 2 hour cool down.   In war if you take a keep it could take hours and finally it comes down to attrition or even better you take the keep and have to guard it or use an alliance of guilds to guard it against further attempts to retake it.    Real time battles over 45 min scenarios...ftw in my opinion.

I won t argue you on that, but WARs keep sieges are i all honesty crap. I played DAOC for 5 years and thats how keep takes should have been done. Even NF keeps are better. This new set up and the fact i ve defended a keep with just me and another against 40+ is a joke. If that gets fixed and many design flaws are fixed i ll be back, but until then this is better IMO.

Sure, neither one is perfect (yet), but, WAR seems to be offering a better product for those interested in PvP.   PvP  in WoW, when now compared to WAR, is just too slow (among other things) for me now. I don't see this new addition changing that, just drawing it out over 45 minutes (hey, kinda like old AV).  It's merely a stop-gap reaction to what they perceive as a threat from WAR.  I wonder what Blizzard will steal next from Games Workshop to further line their pockets (they've been doing it for years, why stop now, lol).

BTW, defending a keep against 40+ in WAR is not indicative of purely poor game design ... there are legions of really, really, really bad players playing WAR currently.  Fingers crossed, this expansion from Blizzard will lure some of the them back to WoW   In the meantime, just keep burning them with oil and watching the XP and RP adding up .

It's called EVE Online, where players can actually -control- regions of the game universe and fight for control of these regions constantly.
