IRVINE, Calif. - October 28, 2008 - Blizzard Entertainment, Inc. announced today that the subscribership for World of Warcraft®, its award-winning massively multiplayer online role-playing game (MMORPG), now exceeds 11 million players worldwide. This milestone was reached as the beta test for Wrath of the Lich King®, World of Warcraft's second expansion, nears completion. Wrath of the Lich King will launch in several regions around the world starting on November 13.
"It's been very rewarding to see gamers around the world continue to show such strong support for World of Warcraft," said Mike Morhaime, CEO and cofounder of Blizzard Entertainment®. “We remain fully committed to responding to that enthusiasm with a high-quality, constantly evolving game experience.
Since debuting in North America on November 23, 2004, World of Warcraft has become the most popular MMORPG around the world. World of Warcraft was recently launched in Russia and Latin America, and is currently available in eight languages. In addition to North America and Europe, the game is played in mainland China, Korea, Australia, New Zealand, Singapore, Thailand, Malaysia, Chile, Argentina, and the regions of Taiwan, Hong Kong, and Macau.
To keep pace with the continued growth of World of Warcraft as well as development on other Blizzard Entertainment games, the company is currently hiring for numerous open positions. More information on available career opportunities at Blizzard Entertainment can be found at www.blizzard.com/jobs.

and while the WOW devs are trying to figure out how to increase capacity for the expansion and it's growing player base.. both AOC and Warhammer devs are working on server mergers.
To the above poster.. there was also a press release in July that stated 10.7M subscribers... so basically it looks like WOW is adding 100k subscribers per month.
I agree thats a good growth rate - that any dev would be estatic over
but pre2008, WOW had even faster growth rates

One thing you have to take into account is that at some point they are going to hit a wall. There are only so many people who play video games, and only so many of those will ever try a MMO.

Yep WoW is doing ok but slowing down.
I think it is pretty good people find their gaming place in WoW.
However, for me, it will be a long time before I return to WoW, I mean there is WAR, Ryzom and perhaps even some more EvE online, will be years before I ever look back to WoW.

Favorite MMORPG's : DAoC pre ToA-NF, SWG Pre CU-NGE, EVE Online
Grats, Blizz.
Although I'm sure some bitter WoW-hater will make the point that Asia makes up for 10.9 of that 11 Million.
you talk about it like its a good thing...its very bad for industry if theres just one game. if wow had a rival we would see more content and more innovative ideas because the two games would be trying to get one up on the other.
Thats cool, keep in mind blizzard just opened up in two new countries so of course they increased Subscriptions.
I would love to see Blizzards increases over the last year in NA and Euro Alone.
But either way good job, WoW is the Mcdonalds of MMOs, nothing wrong with that its good to have a nice starter MMO for new players and people that never played a MMO before.
Personally I enjoy more advanced MMOs.
PLaying: EvE, Ryzom
Waiting For: Earthrise, Perpetuum
If you enjoy advanced MMO's then you really need to stop playing War and start playing Saga of Ryzom. That way you can stop playing the Mcdondald's of PvP MMO's and get into something with a lot more depth maybe?
"Everything is mine and your woman too"
Well Blizzard may be slowing down but in a year have attracted more subs than any of the new games this year is pretty good as far as I am concerned. They are all trying to hold on to their dwindling populations while WoW is still growing.
Personally I jump around between MMO's but usually end up spending more time in WoW than the others.
Guess someone needs to tell the people they aren't supposed to STAY with the starter MMO.
Ok, I'm confused. Weren't people going around a while back quoting Blizzard as saying they had 13 milion back then and now it's 11 mil?
Wouldn't that be going down in subs instead of up?
To bad WOW is still only ranked 21st on this website. Apparently not everyone agrees its the best its just a easy game with alot of subs.
The Mcdonalds analogy works very well to describe WOW. Billions served but nobodys favorite food.
Playing- Guild Wars 2, SWTOR
SWTOR Referral Link Get a free Server Transfer and lots of other free stuff for your SWTOR account! Works for both new and previous players.
I never saw a press release for 13 mil -- but welcome to look
press releases from 2006 forward

How is it the mcdonalds? Just by numbers?
What MMORPGs are you currently playing.

I often wonder that. If people think WOW is mcdonalds, what do they think their game is.
I would say games like Warhammer and AOC would be a truckstop. Sloppy food, no quality control and they leave a ton of people running to the bathroom.
The former CEO of AOC tried to say his game would be like steak and wow was hamberger.... umm. you see how that turned out for him. He was booted from the company, which is about to go bankrupt.
Well there is no real competion, so i guess it's normal. All the others MMO's on the market just WOW wannabe.
If we are going annually, then the January 2009 numbers may be interesting. Remember todays 11 million announcement reflects the numbers before the expansion pack release.
And regardless, the fact that WoW is still seeing subscriber increases is a huge boon for Blizzard. It means they have an almost guaranteed base of expansion pack purchasers that is at a minimum 80% of the current subscriber numbers. That would put expected retail box sales at almost 10x other recent MMO releases such as WAR, AoC or LotRO.
If you enjoy advanced MMO's then you really need to stop playing War and start playing Saga of Ryzom. That way you can stop playing the Mcdondald's of PvP MMO's and get into something with a lot more depth maybe?
While I agree WAR is the mcdonalds of PVP games I never said it was a bad thing. I'm actually a very casual player of WAR.
If you guys want to take what i wrote as offensive I couldn't careless, The fact is WoW was build as a casual game. 99% of the game is very easy excluding 25 man raid encounters. WoW is a great MMO to break into the genre with.
And to the Quoted poster I do play Ryzom its one of the three games I play along with Eve which is in no way a starter MMO. I play Eve the most atm, WAR is new so I'm testing the Waters, while its a fun game much like WoW I can already tell the game won't last me more than a year due to lack of complexity and difficulty.
I enjoyed my time with WoW , it was just time to move on. I don't think theres anything wrong with out growing a game.
PLaying: EvE, Ryzom

wtf?!
May be in the fantasy mmo market.
What about sci-fi and MMOFPS's...?
People just shouldnt post sometimes...lol
Personally I think WoW is a bandwagon game, but thats my opinion.
