To rogues, would this be a viable build?

SlazerSlazer Member Posts: 251

Im thinking of going with this build for retail. It doesnt really specialize in any area, but I think it has some strong points.

Assassination Talents (25 points)

Malice - 5/5 points
Increases your critical strike chance by 5%.

Improved Eviscerate - 3/3 points
Increases the damage done by your Eviscerate ability by 15%.

Improved Slice and Dice - 3/3 points
Increases the duration of your Slice and Dice ability by 45%.

Ruthlessness - 3/3 points
Gives your finishing moves a 60% chance to add a combo point to your target.

Relentless Strikes - 1/1 point
Your finishing moves have a 20% chance per combo point to restore 25 energy.

Lethality - 5/5 points
Increases the damage done by your critical strikes by 50% when using the Sinister Strike, Gouge, Backstab, Ambush, Ghostly Strike, or Hemorrhage abilitiy.

Improved Instant Poison - 5/5 points
Increases the chance to apply Instant Poison to your target by 10%.

Combat Talents (26 points)

Improved Sinister Strike - 2/2 points
Reduces the Energy cost of your Sinister Strike ability by 5 Energy.

Improved Gouge - 3/3 points
Increases the effect duration of your Gouge ability by 1.5 seconds.

Precision - 5/5 points
Increases your chance to hit with melee weapons by 5%.

Improved Backstab - 3/3 points
Increases the critical strike chance of your Backstab ability by 30%.

Improved Evasion - 2/2 points
Increases the effect duration of your Evasion ability by 4 seconds.

Dual Wield Specialization - 5/5 points
Increases the damage done by your offhand weapon by 50%.

Dagger Specialization - 5/5 points
Increases your chance to get a critical strike with Daggers by 5%.

Blade Flurry - 1/1 point
Increases your attack speed by 20%. In addition, attacks strike an additional nearby opponent. Lasts 15 seconds.

Subtlety Talents (0 points)

None

My main idea with this build is increasing my critical strike chance (5 points in Malice, 3 points in Improved Back Stab, and 5 points in Dagger Specialization), increasing attack speed (3 points in Improved Slice and Dice and 1 point in Blade Flurry), and doing damage with poisoin (5 points in Improved Instant Poison). I figure if I use daggers, mixed with Slice and Dice and Blade Flurry, and poisons, I can make up some of the dps I miss out with swords, and with the fast attacking and improved instant poison, I have many more chances to get poison to proc, not to mention bonuse to accuracy with 5 points in precision.

Also threw in Ruthlessness and Relentless strike to help me build back some energy, and save energy by getting a free combo point. I put two points into improved evasion because I need to get to dagger specialization and duel wield specilization.

That looks like a well thought out plan. It would do well in both PvP and PvE.

Another build I might go with is more of a subtelty build.

    Assassination Talents (9 points)

    # Improved Eviscerate - 3/3 points
Increases the damage done by your Eviscerate ability by 15%.

    # Malice - 5/5 points
Increases your critical strike chance by 5%.

    # Murder - 1/2 point
Increases your chance to hit while using your Sap, Ambush, Garrote, or Cheap Shot abilities by 3%.

    Combat Talents (8 points)

    # Improved Sinister Strike - 2/2 points
Reduces the Energy cost of your Sinister Strike ability by 5 Energy.

    # Improved Gouge - 3/3 points
Increases the effect duration of your Gouge ability by 1.5 seconds.

    # Improved Backstab - 3/3 points
Increases the critical strike chance of your Backstab ability by 30%.

    Subtlety Talents (34 points)

    # Rapid Concealment - 5/5 points
Reduces the cooldown of your Stealth ability by 5 seconds.

    # Master of Deception - 5/5 points
Reduces the chance enemies have to detect you while in Stealth mode. More effective than Master of Deception (Rank 4)

    # Opportunity - 5/5 points
Increases the damage dealt when striking from behind with your Backstab, Garrote, or Ambush abilities by 20%.

    # Initiative - 5/5 points
Gives you a 75% chance to add an additional combo point to your target when using your Ambush, Garrote, or Cheap Shot ability.

    # Improved Ambush - 3/3 points
Increases the critical strike chance of your Ambush ability by 40%.

    # Improved Rupture - 3/3 points
Increases the damage of dealt by your Rupture ability by 30%.

    # Improved Sap - 3/3 points
Adds a 90% chance to return to stealth mode after using your Sap ability.

    # Improved Cheap Shot - 2/2 points
Reduces the Energy cost of your Cheap Shot ability by 20.

    # Preparation - 1/1 point
When activated, this ability immediately finishes the cooldown on your other Rogue abilities.

    # Hemorrhage - 1/1 point
An instant strike that damages the opponent and causes the target to hermorrhage, increasing any Physical damage dealt to the target by up to 3. Lasts 30 charges or 15 seconds. Awards 1 combo point.

    # Premeditation - 1/1 point
When used, adds 2 combo points to your target.

This would go along the lines of a classic rogue, hide in the shadows, stealth quickly, and strike from behind as much as possible.

Heh, I could probably go on and on with different talent builds, I should probably just stop messing around with them till open beta and I get a chance to try them out.......

Your second build has a more roleplayesque feel to it. Like you said, it's how one would perceive a classical role. While I'm not sure how effective in PvP it would be, it would be a very nice build to use PvE.

am i the only one getting bad memories of Diablo 2 Character planning....

DUDE ITS NOT OUT YET!! and already your planning your every move, to be the uber!.... christ this is the first real thing that reminds me that WoW is pretty much Diablo 2's successor, and along with all the diablo 2 community the good, the bad, the ugly, and the power gamers.

Dude, before planning just get a feel for the game, test out skills on your own before planning. I find this the best way to play, sure you might not be as powerful as some people but still planning now is kinda a little don't you think?

Not trying to be mean but im already thinking from this thread that there will be THE builds like in diablo 2... Javazon,Hammerdin, Bowazon? anyone?. Where everyone follows a guide to the letter.

*sigh*...... and i thought WoW might be slightly different, but if it brings out after 6 months all that is in the stagnant diablo 2 community then i will prob quit at that point. The game itself is brilliant but if i see people planning paths and looking at 'THE' guides for 'THE' best classes then ill be greatly upset :(.

o yea, im unsure about release but in EU beta we can relearn talents anyways.

So that might help :). Of course talents are nice but the basics such as lvl/items are more powerful.

I also hope they slow lvling as already in EU beta someone is lvl 60 after 2 weeks.

    Wow. Someone needs a hug.

This happens with every game, even moreso if it's a pvp game. Shit, there are guilds formed for games that aren't coming out for two years, or more. This is nothing new, and hell his post is more well written, intelligent, and constructive than 99% of the other posts around here lately.

Lol, lvl 60 in 2 weeks? Shit, I was hoping it would take a hardcore gamer like 3 months... Casual gamer about a year.

    That's really dissapointing to hear...

As for the topic at hand, I've already planned out the order in which I'll choose my talents. I figured nearly everyone would have by now.

I don't know... this looks good but really the spells/strats you use during the game is constantly changing. Especially if you go into a guild where you are trying to be unique!

I already know this (See above). And I am not planning out my moves to be 'uber' (I couldnt give a shit if I was 'teh l33test' out there) I just dont want to be gimped. Since we will be unable to get talent points back, I dont want to make a build that turns out to be sucky when Im level 40+ so no one ever parties with me for raid/high end stuff. And since there is no way in hell I will get to that content in the open beta, I wanted someones input who has had a chance to play that high end content.

I AM NOT looking for the best class, I AM NOT reading all the guides, I AM NOT a powergamer. I just want to ensure that I have a viable character, and I already stated that I should stop and just worry about that after open beta, so that I have fun.

And another reason I am planning is because I had a bad experience with Final Fantasy XI. I changed my job a shit load of times and got bored with the game without ever getting a class past level 35. I just dont want to shoot myself in the foot like I did in FFXI.

I have played the game, I played a Warlock to 17 and Paladin to 15 in the stress test (neither fit what I wanted to play), so I have a general idea of what I want from the game.

While this is true, the talents you choose will force you into using certain skills more than others. Thats another reason why I am planning. Having a particular talent for a particular skill earlier in the game could be good, but at end game content and pvping, the skill/talent combo could be worthless, and I plan on doing a lot of pvp once I hit the level cap. Again, I am not triyng to by uber or l33t, Im just trying to keep myself from being gimped.

Totally agree dude. But i don't know. Tell me would you stick with a few spells/skills and max them out or go for a happy medium for alot of them. Another thing what skills for rogues would prove useful in pvp'ing cuz im planning to do the same thing as u. Go fight once i get the level cap.

  • SilenceRogueSilenceRogue Member Posts: 20
O sorry about that. Should i just create a complete new post if i was going to say something like that?

There are enough "IM PISSED AT BLIZZARD" or "I NEED OPEN BETA NOW" threads around, should be pretty easy to find one. Post those type of posts there.

Im not in the beta so I dont really know about whats skills/talents would help with PvP, which is one of the main reasons why I started this thread.

To your mentioning picking a few spells/skills to max or go for a happy medium for a lot of them, thats what my two builds were pointing too. My first build got an even amount of Assassination and Combat talents, while my second build specialized mainly on Subtelty, with a few talents in Assassination and Combat. From what I have read specializing in any of the three talent trees makes a failry good rogue, but oen can make an interesting rogue build by using talents from all the trees.

I dunno, I hope open beta gives me enough time to get a good amount of talent points to try different builds. If not, I have to rely on experiences from beta testers. It all comes down to what I want to play, but if I can find a beta tester that wants to play the same type of rogue I do, I can learn something I didnt know otherwise, and I might just find out that that style of rogue wasnt what I really wanted to play.

I am trying to peace together a character build in my head right now for my Troll Rogue. Yours are very good and I am trying not to, but I keep looking back at your two set ups for some reference. They are really good, especially the first one for PvP purposes. On paper atleast, I guess you will see in Open/Retail.

As you said, that's what a build is all about. Make sure your character doesn't get so scattered and spread out between his or her skills that they become to weak to do too much of anything at later levels.

Your second build seemed much more focused on what you wanted, yet the first was still very good, even though it seemed a little stretched, it still seemed focused. I don't really know how to explain it...you ever have that type of moment?

Haha, yea, I have those moments.

As to looking at my builds, dont sweat it, I had to look at other people's build to get where mine are.  Acctually a big part of my two builds is just messing around while Im bored, Ive spent several hours at the WoW Vauilt IGN site just on the talent calculator, messing around with different builds.  Sometimes I come up with good ones, others I come up with crap ones.

Guess I will just have to play open beta to get an idea of what my idea of a rogue is.  One of the main things I want to focus on is the Subtelty talents, particularly the one that reduces stealth's cooldown by 5 seconds and the one that decreases your chance of being spotted while stealthed.

Say Slazer, are you going to be an Horde(oh yeah!) or Alliance(booz!) Rogue?

I am going with Horde because I like the surroundings you start in. The desert is so cool in this game. And I love being the under dog.

Unfortuantly (seeing as I seem to have found a fellow Rogue-in-arms) Im going to play alliance.  Mainly because my brother, my friend, and my brother's friends are playing alliance, and the night elf starting area looks tight.

The unfortunate thing about the alliance side is that it will have the less mature player base, and more people.

Lets make sure we end up on the same server though, we can always get some friendly PvP in.  Only problem is we wouldnt really be able to communicate in game, we would have to set up a time/place oustide of WoW.

Unfortunate, though, that we can't team up.

Yea, we cant team up, but we can do one on one duels, or we could meet each other face to face in big raids.  Either way, Im sure we will see each other eventually if we are on the same server.

It would be great to look across a huge battlefield and see a familiar name and be like: "Hey, I know that guy...I think I am gonna kill him, it'll be fun."
Oh and by the way, my ex says "Hi" I am on the phone with her...mixed emotions.
