Atlantica Online. You'll never get bored because you'll never run out of things to do. And they feature a turn based system which is very rare in a MMORPG. You can try that one.
As far as quality and being able to play for a long time I would have to go with Anarchy online. As far a decent free MMO that can be fun for a month or two before you need something new I would have to recommend Flyff or any of those other free games made by that company.
Everyone's definition of fun is different (which is why half the posts on any mmo board critizing a game are futile to read).
While it may not be the most popular, for me, the funnest free mmo is Regnum Online. The game is based on Realm vs. Realm pvp combat, so the fights are always different, ranging from attacks on forts, to massive zerg battles, to solo hunts and ambushes.
I find the game fun because there is so much diversity and variety in what happens. Of course, you may feel differently.
He asked for a popular game not a game that has less than a thousand players on at max, although it's a good game i wouldn't suggest it, try out atlantica

Sorry I didn't reply sooner, but I was banned for a week for writing a post about Regnum in the DAoC forum
I am in the blue realm (Alsius) on the Horus server. My character is Gideon Slack, Nordo Hunter, currently 40th lvl.
One of my most recent discoveries is Wizard101 - it's very different from the mass of free MMOs out there. I'm sure it won't be for everyone, but honestly, I was surprised I didn't find it sooner.
Now, Wizard101 is a little "child-like" in that it's set to be a family game. But once you start playing you get addicted. You can play for free, but after a certain point it really does come in handy to pay for the additional areas and features. My boyfriend and I played for only a couple of days before we subscribed The combat system is new and different, makes it a lot of fun even if your soloing or grouping. Download it and give it a chance, you'll see why it's addictive. The spell effects are a lot of fun, too I love the ghoul.. I call him Cletus.
Another one I like is DOMO (Dream of Mirror Online), that one's a little more well known.
Saga of Ryzom is free now, I'm just not crazy about the new starter arae. I played that for a couple years as a subscriber, before they took away the primary US server. They're merged, now.
Requiem is actually pretty fun and different, too, if you like bloody MMOs That's another one we're currently playing.
I personally was not crazy about the turn-table play of Atlantica.
Rohan is another one that I like
I hope you're able to find something you like! Good luck
I agree. I'm so hooked on Atlantica it's ridiculous. It's a MMO that actually requires strategy and thought in combat. Plus betting on the arena battles is awesome.
Sad that not many people know about this game. It's easily the best MMO I've played so far. There's so much to do it seems I'll never ever get bored of it.

Are you a warlock or warrior?
I'm always on the look out for fun, free games.
