Top 10 MMOGs

I need help.

Ok, I'm looking for MMOGs to play. Ten at most and I can discern them from there. Problem is, I've never played an MMO and I don't really have any experience. They have to be rated "T for Teen" and include the following content or less: Violence, Use of Alcohol or Tobacco Reference

By the way, PLEASE make sure it has none or barely any sexual or suggestive themed content.

Please give me your best opinion for some MMOs!

A little more info to help you:

  1. Sci-Fi and Fantasy genres
  2. Teen rated games
  3. FPS is fine
  4. content meeting the specs above
  5. lastly, it has to be able to run on: 2 GB RAM, GeForce 8600 GT, 2.2 GHz Processor, 320 GB Hard Drive.

Also, some games I was considering were:

  1. Stargate Worlds (most likely)
  2. Star Trek Online (maybe)
  3. EVE Online (need more research)
  4. World of Warcraft (if I'm allowed. please tell me all the info on the ESRB for this game)

Thanks in advance! I go on the internet everyday, so expect replies soon!

EDIT: By the way, upcoming MMOGs will be fine too

you choose either alliance or horde (good/evil).  on alliance you can be human, gnome, dwarf, night elf, alien thingy, and i think thats it.

horde is orc, troll, undead, cow people, blood elf, .... yeah...

you got your basic classes: warrior, mage, priest, paladin, druid, warlock, rogue, hunter bleh bleh bleh

you pick your side and class. customize your character with the most amazing options of like face and hair color. and there are about 4 different faces! WOWIE!

you start out in your little newbie zone and do quests, then those quests take you to another place to do quests. then after doing those quests you go to a new place to do more quests. and every quest is pretty much exactly the same. go collect x amount of these, or go and kill an x amount of these mobs

that or you can always do the old fashioned way of leveling. find a place you can kill at without getting owned and grind your ass off for hours

crafting is pick a archtype and go harvest some thing you need for it and click a button and boom its created, its really challenging

then after you get bored to death of quest grinding you can go and pvp! go to your battlegrounds npc's at your respective city and wait for the game to fill. lower levels its slow but if you quest grind to max level you can get a BG game in seconds. then you can grind those for days for pvp gear.

or if your really bored you can go to a zone like the barrens and talk about chuck norris and super cool things like that!

its pretty much the funnest game that has ever been created.

and if you are poor you can buy gold from the 245 million gold farmers that advertise in and out of game

i think i covered all the bases there for WoW!

    Eat the dead,

WOW hate , and questionable lang. aside. OP was looking for unbiased info! And the comment about being allowed to play from him/her, states you are probably talking to a child! YES I made a silly commet in this post  too, but going all crazy like that was uncalled for. Just take a drink and I will book you on the DR. Phil show as soon as I can! I took this post as very negative but feel free to correct me!

    Gosh - such helpful replies.

MMORPGs don't tend to have a whole lot of sexual content - it's mostly fantasy / cartoon violence (the vast majority are Teen rated).  The only definate exception to that is Age of Conan which is M rated and does contain nudity.

That said - the online component is unrestricted, meaning that your interaction with the other players isn't governed by the ESRB rating in the vast majority.  The conversations and themes on in-game chat can and will range from nothing to very mature.  Many guilds will police themselves on such things - but there's no guarentee.

Provided that processor is a Core2 and not a P4 you're fine with those specs.  You wouldn't be able to play at max settings on some games, but they'll all play and look pretty good.

Since you're new to the genre I'd recommend going with an established game of the mainstream variety.  World of Warcraft is a good choice (the graphics will look a little dated now).  A similar (but newer) game would be Lord of the Rings Online.

EVE is an excellent game, but it has a very steep learning curve and is best suited to a patient player with a fair bit of time to play.  Also helps if you're naturally social and looking to actually play 'with' other people online (as opposed to other games where you can very easily solo through the whole game).  It's hard to recommend a new player to EVE right away without knowing the type of person you are.

The other games you mention aren't going to be out for a bit, and as a new player to the genre it may be a frustrating experience to jump into a game that is just released.  There is a lot of stability and balancing issues to take care of in a new MMO and putting up with them is something of an aquired taste.  You'd probably be better off with a game that's been released for a few months at least.

There's really a lot to cover, keep reading and jump in when you've got a good feeling about a certain game.  Just be aware that there's a lot of people that either fanatically defend or fanatically attack every game on the market.  Pick one you like and make your own opinions.

OP, you're a teenager, and EVE generally doesn't hold people of your age's interest. (a great game for us old folks though)

If this is to be your first MMORPG game, and you don't mind paying for the sub, go with WOW, LotRO or maybe even WAR. (for games that are already out).

Can't tell you about future games, but you have them pretty well covered.

Another great choice for you might be City of Heroes/Villians.

edit: none of the games I listed are rated above Teen, so your parents should approve.

You know very well that was a horrible discription, YAH you got the basics down(somewhat). There where no PRO's or CON's invovled, if I read that I would never even do a trial! Grindfest that it sometimes it can be, 11 million people don't play it for nothing. Inless you are referring to 245million gold farmers

thanks for the info (most of you that is) . . .

anyway, I guess i'll look more into some MMOs. But, don't mind me asking, (please don't get mad) what ten MMOs that are Fantasy and Sci-Fi would you recommend to a n00b like me? By the way, once I play a few of the easier MMOs, I'll be able to play harder ones, sop don't list just easy ones, OK?

blizzard did so well cause every person on b.net who loved starcraft/diablo/warcraft all flocked to wow cause the entire game can be done alone.  and i wouldnt be surprised if a majority of the players that make up their millions of subs are gold farmers.

or people running that program that plays the game for them so they dont actually have to waste their time playing a game. just come back a few days later and have a high level toon. my friend does that cause he is so bored of the game he just wants to do end game bg's

wow is a grindfest. theres nothing else to it

EDIT: By the way, upcoming MMOGs will be fine too

I think, being you totally new t the genre, you can find many good MMOs around, just because everything will be pretty new for you.

Of course, asking in a MMO forum for honest judgements is optimistic. It's normal you get hate/love answers about game A or game B.

Apart of Age of Conan that doesn't fit in your ESRB, most of the MMOs are Teen rated.

In my opinion, if you are really new to the genre,  you can find at least these MMO enjoyable, you can get a lot of fun before they start getting old as for most of us that played a lot.

Lotro, Vanguard, EQ2, WoW, WAR - quest based, linear and class based. In terms of the gameplay they are almost the same, apart of the background, but all offer a good setting is some way.

CoH/CoV - quest based, linear and class based. In erms of gameplay it offers the most casual friendly environment, being able to get fast action easy. It became severely repetitive after a while, but it is a good super heroes based game and very fun the first time you play it.

If you want to try something more open minded (in some way sandbox) games:

EVE Online - Spatial game, not easy to play, pvp centric. Skill based.

Ryzom - Mixed fantasy/Sci-Fi, not usual setting. Skill based. Crafting and harvesting are the best features, if you like something that require to use the mind and not just to push a button.

They are both hard games to play in terms of time investment and gameplay, with EVE probably the hardest.

Of course there are more, but I only mentioned p2p games that I think a newbie can enjoy the most.

I didn't mentioned any FPS because I don't play them.

Most of the p2p MMOs now have free trials so, the best thing to do is to try and see by yourself.

Finally i wish to tell you welcome in the crazy world of MMOs and have fun.

You don't have much to choose from if you want to play a MMOG that's vastly popular at the moment.

It's just World of Warcraft and er... World of Warcraft.

Yeah, World of Warcraft is good, it kept me occupied for over a year and it's rated T for teen.

For me it's the best of the shit.

    Theres no good mmorpgs anymore.

  • BellaHBellaH Member UncommonPosts: 269

For the requirments listed I would suggest sticking with the free to play variety for your first MMORPG, get to know how these types of games operate, and what details you will ussually find. Also most free to play games, like Dream of Mirror online, Flyff, Florensia, NeoSteam, Holic, Angels Online, Trickster and many more, this type of game is usually played by the younger crowd. If your not yet a teen, I would suggest Toon Town, Pirates of the Carabien, Habo Hotel, Club Penguin, and other of this genre, you will find that most of the crowd in these game are kids of that age. Any atleast google these suggested games, and have fun!

  • azgarthazgarth Member UncommonPosts: 188

The most adequate for your age might be Final Fantasy XI. It's interesting and doesn't have real violence or anything that might offend you.

Also, in what concerns WOW, I would like to point out that

HORDE IS NOT=EVIL, and ALLIANCE IS NOT=GOOD

Lore wise they are simply 2 factions at war.

A good MMO to start you out on, is Ultima Online, easy to learn, and is actually the grandfather of all MMOs, the drawback to that game is its old, over 10 years, and showing its age, the developers refuse to bring it up to date. I wwas there for 10 years hehe

Some of the other games I have played, enjoyed but failed to keep my intrestfor more than a few months

World of Warcraft...good graphics but the game gets old very fast plain out right questing to get ahead is kinda boring.

Requiem: Bloodymare, didn't really live up to its name it is a mature rated game but has the feel of a childish game and another hack and slash mmo.

Florensia : this one held my intrest a bit longer as it had a dual fighting system, but in the end it got old, just another quest your heart out game.

I am currently playing Runes of Magic, but Its still being betaed and due to a NDA I can't really talk about anything,

so good luck on finding a MMO

if you are wanting to get on a childish side of MMO you have Hello kitty online or disney has a game called faries I think I will have to ask my daughter when she gets up, she playes both....

  • Aetern-eAetern-e Member UncommonPosts: 77

*sniff* I am fourteen, okay? Am I not allowed to enjoy EVE? Just because I wasn't there when Ultima Online was released, doesn't mean I wouldn't want to.

EVE can be enjoyed by anyone, it's all how much time you're willing to spend.

  • knightauditknightaudit Member UncommonPosts: 389

To answer your question based on the information you have supplied.

World of Warcraft would be a good choice as a starting game. It learning curve as a new person to an MMO is very good. I think you may find a few of the inside jokes to be very funny... such as the one vendor "Harris Pilton" Who sells very expensive items and bags. (I still chuckle on that one)

Another I would suggest is City of Heroes or City of Villians. Can not go wrong with Comic book / Super Hero games and as it is the only one out there right now... Well you get the idea. COH is a very easy game to learn which I feel is great for a first time player.

One game you may want to avoid is Eve. Not that it is not fun, but the whole economy system even gives me a headache. The learning curve is also very steep. It is a fun game, but bring an economist or a business major with you. LOL

    Good Luck out there

The best game ever made is FFXI,but it does not suit you.A game that would suit your needs is any newer game ..why?because the noob zones would be flourishing,so you could grab a guild of friends your level to hang with.

WOW is very solo friendly to any noob, that has no grouping experience and would not like the waiting around for groups in a game like FFXI.EQ2 is EXACTLY like wow, only they removed the death penalty shard, while WOW maintains you going back to get your shard.Neither game is busy in noob zones, even WOW's claims of a bazillion uisers ,does nothing to actually being in the game in the noob zones. You will actually be luckier to see a noob in FFXI than in any WOW noob zone, and that is not saying a lot.I re rolled a noob toon in WOW and spent what 2 weeks playing, and i would say i saw a total of maybe 5 players ,three of witch were high levels passing by,one asked me to join there guild.Yes 5 players in two weeks lol,it shows the WOW base is a bunch of kids racing to high levels to do l33t raiding lol.

Newest games out are Warhammer/AOC and a bunch of F2P games, that would be your best bet IMO.Grab a F2P game and get your feet wet, anything by Aeria games or try Silkroad Online or Atlantica or Ryzom heck there is a ton of F2P games out there. The more you try the more you will learn about different UI's /mechanics,the problem is that besides FFXI,there is NOT one game on the market designed to teach GROUPING.In FFXI grouping is a MUST facet of the game from level 10-75,unlike other games that group to raid or get some special content done.

PLaying SOLO in any game is really not like a MMO anymore, your better off playing a single player or first person shooter like unreal or call of duty or quake.

How many people could honestly rattle off their Top 10 "MMOGs" (sic)? Who has even TRIED more than 10? Or even 5 for that matter? Furthermore, you need to invest VAST amounts of time in each to get an informed opinion on them.

ANYWAY, this one is a no-brainer. I have, indeed, experienced 10 from the list you see on the left side of this panel - and for any beginning player World Of Warcraft is where you should be heading. It's the most straightforward, easy-to-learn, absorbing and addictive of the lot!

Personally, WoW along with the amazing LOTRO fulfils all my MMORPG needs. And I think these are the only two I'll need for a long time. Ok, maybe I'll try the new Star Wars one when it comes out.
