Why no perma-death?

MST3K84MST3K84 Member Posts: 69

I say we petition Aventurine to implement perma-death into DF! I can't think of anything more hardcore than the chance of losing not only all of your personal belongings, but the very character you invested so much time in. Granted, I'd spend more than my fair share of time at the character creation screen, but it'd really add to the suspence of the game. It would also require people to rely more on others, and put the multi-player back into MMORPGs. For a game striving for realism and originality (and all things hardcore), amor loss just isn't a sufficient enough penalty for death!

Probably a joke post, but I'll respond. Perma-death, I'd say, is much too hardcore even for most of those who consider themselves "extremely hardcore PvPers". I don't think anyone sane would actually want to play a perma-death MMO for very long if it's got any form of non-consentual PvP in it (or any type of grind, which effectively rules out perma-death for all MMOs).

Joke post or not, it demonstrates perfectly the cult of darkfall. Clinging to a game that will never take off in a vain attempt to seem "hardcore" for some unknown and mysterious reason

Bans a perma, but so are sigs in necro posts.

It's a game in which you will die A LOT. Perma-death would be weaksauce.

    you seem to like bacon.

Anyway. Perma death lol, what a joke, what is 'hardcore' about it. Infact I am struggling to see how you can actually reach 'Hardcore' on a computer game unless we are talking TRON somehow manifesting itself into a real life situation...grow up please.

What would be so great about dying every two seconds to a bunch of kids zerging because they think its hilarious that you are deleted permanently, from which you have to go through the process of creaton of character, establishing links again with friends...who are also now dead...and guild integration....its a stupid thought and only one that a childs imagination could consider a great idea for an MMO....yeah, real hardcore man.....wack....or whatever the appropriate youth lingo is today to fit that sacrcastic end.

EDIT: besides, all the major decisions for this game have been made already.......what is the point of this thread.

Man what a great idea. What about, the person who kill you can play a football with your head and you as a ghost will run around him and his mates trying to catch it..

Love how we cant have one discussion thread on this forum without a troll playing internet badboy to compensate for himself.

    As for the OP's topic...

This has been a debate that has come up many times on the official forums over the years.  The official stance is there will be no Permadeath (hardcore servers as they are also known as).

I could care less, though if they were to develop 1 server which had this ruleset, I would definitely try it out for the extra excitement.

You're completely right. You should go to the official forums right now and make a suggestion about perma-death (preferably in the Advanced Disscussion) and see how everyone will agree with you.

Perma death exists in EVERY MMO. Just delete your character when you die.

What you are really asking for is for you to be able to kill off other peoples characters, not your own.

Because in a game where char level makes a big difference something like that would make a sense i don't see it practicable in DF ..it would just mean you have to create 10 - 15 new chars in a day ...

I'm not advocating hardcore servers for DF, but I will say that if there was a game where it may make sense, it would be DF.

A lack of emphasis on gear in addition to the fact that the developers have explained that a handful of complete new chars who play their class well could take out a player who has been playing awhile.

In a game like WoW, this would be impossible.  Hell a lvl 70 could go AFK for awhile with 20 lvl 1s attacking and would be more than fine.

If the game releases well and the lag is minimal, I wouldnt mind seeing them implement a hardcore server down the road as just something fun.  Im just a fan so im not sure what the costs would be of this, or the time it would take, but it would be interesting to see.  Always liked the hardcore version of Diablo 2, even if it was just to randomly get on and play.

Personally, I dont like perma-death because these are games and not real life.  The game should be fun for me and, as I dont like perma-death, I wont have fun with it.

I would like to see a server with it so all the people that likes it, can play with that rule set.

    Fun is the key.

    One step further..

While playing darkfall you MUST play with a USB wire in your mouth.  If you die, the game sends a jolt of electricity through the wire.  If you die enough, they higher a guy name Moe to come to your house and kill you.. with the last words "Thank for playing"

    Currently playing Real Life..

Perma-death sounds like an excellent idea if this game really is going to be as "hardcore" as the fans think it will be. In fact, anyone who doesn't want perma-death is a carebear.

Tried: LotR, CoH, AoC, WAR, Jumpgate Classic
    Played: SWG, Guild Wars, WoW
    Playing: Eve Online, Counter-strike
    Loved: Star Wars Galaxies
Waiting for: Earthrise, Guild Wars 2, anything sandbox.

yes because creating loads of characters per day is what makes you the HARDCORE! Im with the OP, sign me in!

I just don't see perma death as Hardcore when it comes to a video game. All it is, is a reset button. It is just another method of grind that lazy themepark Devs can use to keep people entertained by making them repeat the same content over and over till they completely lose interest.

For Perma Death to be Hardcore to me, it would need to be setup like this.

    1) The game cost 20/30 bucks (reason explained soon)

    2) No monthly fee (Reason explained soon)

    3) (Reason why lol) You get one char per purchase. You buy the game you get one char slot and only one. If your char dies thats it. You can not make another, he's dead and gone. In order to play the game again you would need to go out and buy a new copy of the game.

To me, that would make perma death Hardcore, make perma death like that and I'd be all for it in any game. As Perma death is at the moment it is merely some lame reset button that some that don't think it through consider hardcore.

I mean as it is now what makes it Hardcore? Lets do a DarkFall comparison shall we....

Darkfall With and Without perma Death.

    1)

With - When you die you lose your items, money, any structures you own ect.

Without - When you die you lose items, and money. Your structures can be destroyed. (Not a huge difference here minus the bank items, but bank box's have limited space so... not much difference)

    2)

With - You have to grind skills in order to safely adventure. Going out into the wilds untrained would be very risky. So YAY! you just forced everyone to grind .....

Without- You are not forced to grind lol, nuff said here.

    3)

With - WOot you are no longer accountable for your actions. I mean to be playable with perma death in you have to make things easier (You may disagree but they will or they would lose money, so they will lol) so now since it is so much easier to play you can just delete your char or let em die and make a new one. This works because you can be as much of an arse as you want in the game. With a new name and new char you aren't accountable.

Without - With only 1 char per server you are accountable for your actions. You piss everyone off they won't simply just shrug it off. People are less likely to delete there char and start over without a perma death in place. I mean why start over when you don't have to. So either play nice or get what you deserve.

Actually I am done lol. Perma Death is about as carebear as someone can get. It's a friggin restart button that lets you avoid the choices you made. The only way I would accept it as hardcore is if it weren't merely a reset button and it actually was perma death. 1 char only, when it dies it is gone and you can not play the game anymore period. No making a new char, no reset button lol.

Your Perma Death however is merely a reset button that Atari Games had. Yeah .... thats hardcore alright lol. I guess next your going to ask for continue's lol.

Other character's as well as my own. I think in a game like Darkfall a server with this ruleset would thrive if the forumfallers are to be believed. Yes, I did create this post half in jest after getting fed up with all the "hardcore" thumping their chests proclaiming their elite status as demi-gods among us regular gamers. Since this game is to be ruled by the community itself, their arrogant attitudes could very well drive players away from the game. I still think it would be interesting to play an MMO like DF with perma-death instituted, however.

  • ghoul31ghoul31 Member Posts: 1,955

Perma Death is carebear. What they need to do is hook  you up to electrodes, so that when you die in the game they electrocute you, and you die in real life.
