Free Trial: WTF with the patch and reg?!

So I download the 2+ gig free trial clilent, fine.

I install it, OK.

I register, homongous pain in the asz, but OK, I can live with that.

Now... it is patching 18K+ files. The original install was only 19K+ files.

What the hell is that all about? Why even bother download the client if almost EVERY file is patched immediately. This is the stupidest sh*t I have seen in a while.

Oh and now it bombs out 2K files into the process... and my internet connection is very fast, and stable. Oh well I guess it is a free trial.

That is a lot of files. Only guess I have is that the game has been patched significantly since they created the trial client and needs to get everything updated.

It's not unusual, actually. Any time I've downloaded trials, there have been substantial patches that had to be downloaded and applied before I could play.

As for the download timing out, that isn't necessarily SE's fault. A lot can happen between their file servers and your computer to slow or stall it; bottlenecks, dropped connections, etc. Welcome to the internet.

Either way, it's a long patch and it sucks... but it's a one-time thing. Outside of major updates (like one coming in December), the patches are much smaller - usually no more than 5 minutes.

The game patches very, very slow. I had to patch for 9 hours.  Still, it wasnt 9 hours but less because the speed varied from 10 KB/s to 150 KB/s.

And when you install all the expansions you have to patch another 10k+ files. Yay :P

Yeah, the time is very variable.

I'll start off a full patch with it saying 3 hours to download, but it ends up taking maybe 1.5 hours.

I've yet to see a patcher that gets it accurate 100% of the time.

yeah it takes a while to patch and get up and running, but honestly alot of MMO's I've trialed take a long time to set up. Usually you have the long client download, installing it, and then patching it which is usually the longest part. I just finished patching the game acouple days ago and I decided to give FFXI another try. Just be patient, it should not take more then a day to complete. After all what's 1 day if you end up liking this game and playing for years.

I played the game afew years ago but I didn't give it much of a chance and passed judgment on it fairly quickly, but I almost always give MMO's about three chances before I write it off. I've only put in about 10 hours or so but my WHM is level 11 now and I have to say I'm really enjoying it this time through. I've met some great people already and I actually miss the old school days of grinding with out having to do fetch quests.

By the way just to let you and anyone else know. I found IF you install FF11+the expansions, than go into the Playonline viewer to update it takes a lot less time.

I reinstalled last week off of the 07' collection and WoTG. took maybe 12min to install everything from disk and was patched and ready to play in like 4hours.....something fishie is going on if it takes you much longer than that.

Very acceptable time to install and patch in my book.

I remember playing on an old 800mhz processor and dsl back when i first started to play it took forever just download the updates and install them.

Last night i bought the 2008 collection and installed the core game and the expansions. The installation was quick maybe 10 minutes at the most  the update was like 1and a half housr at least thats what it said before i went to bed.  I have a 4mbps connection.

O.o A day? Geeze you'll scare the guy off! lol

It's never taken me more than 5 hours, and that was at its worst. Man.. I think even I'd lose it if it ever took me a day to patch a game.

You don't. PlayOnline is their official "launcher", and there's no way (that I'm aware of) to by-pass it.

Quickest way to get in is by logging in (inputting password, etc), and when you get to the main screen, there should be a little blue crystal on the top left of the menu (the FF crystal basically). Click on that and it brings you straight to the FF menu. Then just click play.

It's a slight annoyance, but you get used to it.

Final Fantasy XI has with out a doubt been a headache when it comes to updates.  I'm not sure why they are but when they send down big updates it is most certainly a pain.  One thing I do not understand of all MMO's is why not update the trial?  Or when you put out games why not print updated installs on occasion.  I have never played a game years after it's release except for FFXI but it only makes sense that when you make a new "Collection" that you update the base/previous games on the disk.  Square-Enix fails to do this and it's just unknown why.  I'm sure others probably do it too.

I clearly remember the headache this game was to install, register, download all the f'ing updates and when you're playing a new game, you want to make this a simple process.  In the end though, it was all worth it.

When I reinstalled from the 2008 edition the patch was no more than an hour - including the scan, download and install of the updates.

I think it depends on how long after it was released that you bought the updated box. The larger FFXI updates do tend to be substantial in size so, it doesn't take more time to update.

As for the trial, it would make sense for them to update the trial client with each major update to reduce the update time... But then, I have no idea what that involves at their end, so I'm hesitant to say there's no excuse for it.

I dunno... Maybe my threshold is higher after all the MMOs I've played and had really horrendous patching cycles for. The absolute worst for me was reinstalling Lineage 2 a couple years back.. The update took over 16 hours. Nothing since then has even come close.

well for me downloading the trial took about 3-4 hours and patching took approximately 8 hours because it was thousands of files that needed to be updated. My brother just got the xbox 360 version and that one takes an hour to install and 5 and a half hours to patch up.

Maybe it's to weed the people out with no patience? Heh.  Installing and updating is your first "NM" of the game.  If you can beat it before you beat your desk, you win the chance to play an amazing game.

Okay... So mileage may vary :)

It's a large game. There are many files to be updated, depending on how many updates have been added since the version someone installs was released.

Thus, it will take more or less time depending on those variables, as well as connection speed, as well as how "clear" the connection is between you and the update servers, plus how heavily slammed the update servers are... and on and on.

Like others have said... Of course it'd be great to not have to wait a long time for a patch, but you do it once after your initial install and then you're done, unless you have to reinstall. The only times you'll have longer patch times (an hour or so) is every few months when SE does a major update.

Personally, I think if a one-time 5 (or 6 or 7) hour patching time is a deal breaker, or otherwise so unbearable for someone to handle for a game that will, ideally, last them for hundreds, or even thousands of hours... Then... I don't know what to say.

When put in perspective, like the registration process, I think it's one of those things that people make a bigger deal of than is warranted.

Not like people are selectively being given huge patch times. I've dealt with it every time I've had to reinstall - which has been many times over the past 5+ years. It would be nice if it was faster, sure. But, it is what it is.

If you don't mind me asking. Why did you reinstall?  I always keep a backup copy of it and the registry key (and thankfully so) and used it before and it works great.  no need to reinstall if you format.

FFXI doesn't quite work the same way with other MMORPG.  Everytime an expansion disc comes out in FFXI.  It means a huge add to the game's available events.  New areas, new jobs, and new mission storyline and quests, etc and more keeps getting added between the expansion with updates every few months that change from very little to adding new skills, events, or content changes and balance tweaks.

Currently with 4 expansion disc I think.  On top of that alot of update files downloaded from PlayOnline Viewer.

This totals up to about 8+ gigabytes on your hardisk, game content is pretty huge.  (Somtimes I think too much content)

I wish they come out with a disc with all the update files, FFXi is not a game I enjoy patching. My internet average at about 4 hour of patching before the game will start on an install.
