The highest reported subscription to FFXI is 500,000 somewhere around Febuary after its launch for the ENG Ps2 version of the game. The CoP expansion is one of the worst mmorpg expansions ever. I couldn't believe waiting 4 months for the expansion at the brink of quiting, buying the expansion and found that they are not even offering 1/100 of what I had expected, only to fix a handful of class balances and thats it. No new spells or job abiliities for most jobs. Ever since the 500,000 subscription report by Square-Enix, there hasn't been any more official announcements for we all know that even japanese players are leaving the game due to the multitude of problems that Square enix ignores. For the past 3 months, many have already left and I would expect around 350,000 now and probably 250,000 by year end when both WoW and EQ 2 releases. Where do I get these numbers? Search around the web for sites that display graphs of different Mmorpg subscription changes over the years. The expansion had only kept a handful of the going-to-quit players from leaving. There are plenty of existing FFXI players in WoW and EQ 2 betas at the moment. I certainly doubt they would choose to stick with FF online..
DO NOT buy this game just because you are a FAN of Final Fantasy. You will be utterly disappointed beyond belief. It is my regret for purchasing this game in the first place and now, I live with the pain of knowing that I had introduced a group of my friends to join me in this poorly designed mmorpg. My relatives gave up playing only after hitting lvl 25, it all seemed nice and beautiful at first, until you realise how boring and repetitive the game truely is.
If you ever wish to play a melee job in this game, expect to wait up to 6 hours for an invite as you sit at the city Jeuno where parties form up, doing nothing. Lots of my linkshell mates had experienced this for weeks to finally decide to just drop this game altogether and play another mmorpg like CoH where they are actually doing something for the amount of gaming time they have. However, if you believe that you are a patient man and could endure such minor matters, you should purchase a Ps2 or Xbox console and play it while you wait for an invite.
World of warcraft and EQ 2 are around the corner. Do yourself a big favour and not get involved in this game. It is already dead with the army of bot users and chinese gil-farmers. The economy is screwed. Most high levels are elitists and would not invite you into party if you do not own uber gears. When I talk about uber gears, I mean those low lvl requirement equipments that cost millions of gil to obtain. That should take around 1 month or more of mindless 10 hr a day farming or 300+ US dollar if you purchase gil from a gil-seller website. Yes purchasing of gil is fairly common now, the game isn't fair anymore for non-gil-buyers.
In conclusion, this game is another failing product of Square-Enix, just like "The Bouncer","Romancing Saga" and a couple of others, NOT ALL games created by Square-Enix is good. Crono trigger and Final Fantasy RPGs are decent, but FF online is a disgrace to the company's name to say the least.

Democracy is the worst form of government, except for everyone else - Winston Churchill
how can anyone actually thinks this game is good? a fantasy mmorpg that incoporates ps2 players has to be poor from the outset.
The only thing going for this game are the graphics. the boring level grind at low levels lack of combat skills having to play till lev 18 before dual class and having to play for 180 hrs before the "special" classes are unlocked is a friggin joke.
I have played just about every major mmorpg and i must say i would rather level gring on daoc then play this utterly boring and retarded game. i cannot believe i was soo stupid to actual pay for the damn thing. gl to all you people who like boring games, as for 1m people playing it i think the split is 900k japanese 99k american the rest eurpean as it seems these are the only people with enough time to waste on this game.
post 50 a whm is a waste of space, all they offer a team is raise 2, rdm easily replaces a whm with mp regen, hp regen, nukes, some combat ability
plz note my comment is made for +50 chars, if u aint got a tank your in real trouble, your healers are just spending too much mp on healing a non tank in tank position
and heh funny imagine this, under 30 it dont matter whos in your team
FFXI is a very good MMORPG, one of the best acctually but there are many things to fix before it will be the ultimate game, I bet those who play it know what it is. I'm just waiting for them to fix it but I don't know if they will do it. But maybe when WoW is released because many FFXI players will play WoW and EQ2 and then SE will have to do something to get the playes continue play FFXI
I currently havea 39 BLM, 26WHM, 25THF, 25NIN, 15WAR, and I have to agree that the slow paced fighting for monsters is usually quite boring. Having been a mage and melee type, leveling is a bit of a long grind (because of the slower battles). Partying is so so important that it is very difficult to go on lvling up unless you have a party (that includes a whm or a really good rdm) unless you are a BST.
However, I do like the environment and the game itself. I play this and I have fun with the parties, seeing great parties and crappy parties. However, it is really fun. The Grind is the real turn off sometimes after a certain level. Especially after 50, your grinding is just worse. I really liked this game in the beginning, but as you keep going, it becomes more tedious at times. Tedious meaning that you ahve to level up just so that you can do a quest without dying or just to do a quest alone.
The game rocks in the beginning. But as you keep going, the amount of satisfaction drops (unless you are willing to lose your life). I for one can't spedn 2-3 hours just to gain 1-2 levels (or less if you have a crappy team or could not find a team).
Yeah, i am not a consistant player, but when i do play, well just suffice it to say, this is THE BEST game i have ever played! But isnt that what this topic is about? i have a lvl 18 WHM and a lvl 9 WAR and im currently using my WHM as a subjob
I've had two characters and I agree with that FFXI is a wonderful and great game but it's hard and takes a long time. SPecielly for me. First I need to get lv 30 War, then lv 15 mnk (as sub)
Then to my main lv 75 DRK and his sub 37 SAM
It takes a lot of time to gain that level, and yes it will be boring but try to not do all the leveling at the same time. Take a break and do soem quests or earn money between the leveling places.

It's not a bug in the software, it's a feature .
