I played Warhammer Online in the beta and decided to go back to WoW instead, because the games were so similar and I had already invested so much time into WoW. Now I'm getting burnt out because I went to a low Population WoW server and can't do anything anyways.
I'm thinking of buying Warhammer Online on friday and I wanted to know if it was worth it? I'd like some constructive criticism, with pros and cons, not complaining.
If you could also suggest a good high population server and side, I'd appreciate it. I played both in beta, my favorites were the Human Witch Hunter and the Dark Elf Wizard... thanks in advance.
If you're reading this, you probably need to get some sun.

Quit WOW and don't buy Warhammer!

If you like PVP then yes its worth buying.
If you think it looks interesting give it a go, chances are you will enjoy it. If you don't want to take a chance, keep playing WoW and don't transfer (transfers are a waste of cash). Just a small piece of advice, don't judge the state of Warhammer by the nonsense you read on these forums.
STOP WHINING!
Sorry if my english is bad.
I played war in close and open beta. I would say it didn't change much. If you really really like PvPing get war other than that don't wast your money on war. I would give war another 2 or 3 months before trying it out or untill they add /dance emote in the game lol. Yeah its missing alot of fun stuff that bring life to the game. I hope that helps.
oh and don't transfer your character on wow just make a new character on another server. they have that triple exp thing going and everyone is pretty much starting all over when the new expantion pack comes out.
If you loved TBC and want more of exactly the same, you'll love WotLK and should buy it. If you thought TBC was "meh", you'll feel exactly the same way about WotLK.
If you love PvP, you should buy WAR instead. Though have a little patience until 1.1 is released in December, where they do some stuff to get more people out in to the world PvP content - at the moment Scenarios (instanced PvP) is played more as people are trying to play the game as if it was WoW, and because it's more rewarding XP-wise (although they've been increasing open world XP by quite a bit by now, though it's still not quite there I believe).
At the moment i'd say WAR just doesn't have any long lasting appeal so with wotlk just around the corner i'd say your better off staying there for now and then coming and cheaking WAR out after you get bored with wotlk in 4-5 months time which will give mythic time to fix some of the blunders they've made.
What is broken in WAR is exactly the unfinished smooth PvP fights. Smooth fights you are used to in GW and Wow.
It's RvR has much promise but it is clear that today at least this promise can't be delivered.
People need to distinguish between PvP tactical fights and strategy RvR.
Like I said earlier the idea of War's RvR is a perfect 10 (but not yet good implemented for various reasons).
The thing that killed War for me is the lack of smooth controls of your character. Some call it clunky or unresponsiveness. Some say it is stiff and slow. Some say it is good.
I say it hampers your control so much it is a no go for the real PvP player, the real person versus player hardcore, like I am. Skill and control primes everything.
If I want to beat up on some guys, I NEED to have full control of my avatar. Too often I am fighting the control limits of my War Avatar instead of fighting the other guy. This was mentioned by the way in an excellent review by the Dutch PC Game Magazine which gave the overall game 80%.
It is just sad to see a PvP focused game with such bad and slacky controls in its figths. To me it is the most important reason people don't hang in there.
Perhaps those guys coming from DAoC (older) or LOTRO (PVE so combat control is less important) can live with the uncontrolled combat feelings, I am sure the guys coming from GW and Wow see the difference in PvP animation and controls. Also autofacing ??? in a PvP "skill" based game ?
And yes, Xfire is a very good tool to see the players leave the game. But I don't think it has anything to do with PVE or RvR. It has to do with lack of character control and character build in the PvP itself.
WAR is great ff you love doing the same scenario over and over again, because that is currently the only way to grind your way to level 40, they greatly increased the xp needed to level up after the beta.
The open world is empty even on the more populated servers, few bother with the open rvr, and it's very hard to find groups for the public quests. Class balance is shot to hell, the game looks no better than it did in the beta, and it seems to grow more and more unstable with every patch, CTDs are very common.
My advice would be to wait and see if 1.1 is a miracle patch before buying this game, and think twice even then. There is no interesting pve content what so ever in WAR, and the rvr gets old really fast.
WAR has EVERY feature better than WoW: graphics, music, pve, pvp, balance, variety of classes, support, community etc. you name it. plus it has some stuff wow does not have: PQ, tome and a few more
its like WoW2, which is sad to many players, but you will like it certainly.
Playing: Rohan
Played (from best to worst): Shadowbane, Guild Wars, Shayia, Age of Conan, Warhammer, Runes of Magic, Rappelz, Archlord, Knight online, King of Kings, Kal online, Last chaos
It is a great game.. And it will be even better.
It is all about PvP (RvR)... WAR is something like Counter Strike - WoW mix from my point of view.. So if you like to play 80 % of your time against players - go for it!
You are constantly playing scenarios, and if you have nice guild ( i do), you take enemy keep's - and that can be epic sometimes... HUGE BATTLES (on my server)!
If you ask me - this game is 10x better than WoW, and im veteran WoW player , so i know what im talking..
BUT, in the end its only your opinion that mather - you will pay and play it..
GL
First of all - I still LOVE WARHAMMER, does this make me a fanboy since I still play, I guess it does.
Anyways..
If you still got the WoW itch, then don't even try the game (in my opinion). If you still play WoW regularly, then stick to WoW. Most mmo players had very high expectations for WAR only to go back to WoW and critize WAR PvE system.
To be honest and I am not speaking of the vast majority here, if you like PvP and RvR constantly, then give the game a shot. Unfortunately there is more of a playerbase for PvE content than there is for PvP content. Alot of players want to be immersed in a mmo and feel like they are part of a living a breathing world.
IMO - WoW has no immersion for a MMO, just a quick fix on leveling to capp and joining raids. Despite it being fun when the itch calls, it still lacks a sense of immersion, maybe its because of the pastel colors and toon online type graphics. Bet still a fun game, when the time calls for it.
IMO - WAR feels more to me like a Team Fortress in a constant MMO world (because of the scenario grinding... As stated, this is my opinion and doesnt reflect what other player think). The more time I spend though adventuring in this game for its PvE content, the more I am loving the game. I managed to get over 1000 unlocks in my ToK (and feel like I have accomplished goals other than running Scenarios 24/7 a week like some). Now the RvR battlekeep are fun as hell and look for this all the time when I log onto the game.
IMO - MMO's like Everquest Series always felt to me like a true immersion mmo (getting lost in a online world), even though they are not as popular as they once were, but it still holds a dedicated playerbase for so many years and it shows you that you dont have to have 10 million subs for a mmo to be successful still.
To the OP:
That is an interesting question, and one best answered by you. Personally I realized it was time to quit WOW , as I did EQ, DAOC, SWG, etc etc, when it became more about the time investment and less about the fun I was having. When I looked up and realized I was logging in to do daily quests and raid I knew it was time to hit the door.
WAR is fun. That was the first thing I really noticed about the game It is not gear centric or class centric. It provides many flavors of RVR with the different servers. It has an atmosphere where you can play by yourself , with friends or with newly found friends.
Personally I have fun playing different classes, exploring, RVR and questing. So for me this game has been good enough to shell out money on a new PC. But everyone gets different things out of a game. If any of the things I mentioned sounds good then by all means pick up the game and try it. Most you are out is 50 bucks or so and you get a month of trying something new. Not a horrible expense unless you are a starving college student.
Here's my advice...Dont' Grind Actually Play the game you dont' have to wait to lvl 40 to RvR in the Lakes. You don't have to wait to lvl 40 to get good gear, to get good renown, to take keeps, to use siege weapons, and you especially shouldn't wait until level 40 if you want of the gear sets. None of which is available in the scenarios. There problem solved! Mysteries revealed.
Oh and btw we'll just have to agree to disagree on paragraph 2. Its all server dependant on groups and open rvr and personal opeinion on the graphics since i've seen a major improvement in graphics since beta and I've yet to feel any of this unstability problem that people with insufficient machines are having.
How about making another toon aon a heavier populated server and actually having fun with a good guild leveling instead of grinding up?
I would wait to get Warhammer, when the other classes are launched in December.
i have to disagree with people comparing game to counter strike or other fps
scenarios, like in wow do not depend on skill. numbers and gear are more important
if anybody wants cs in fantasy, i recommend guildwars, where teams are always equal and have best stuff to choose for battle. still, even in guildwars its hard to defeat 2 enemies solo (but possible)
darkfall is coming. this will be true fantasy cs, where skilled player will be able to defeat 3-4 nubz solo
Playing: Rohan
Played (from best to worst): Shadowbane, Guild Wars, Shayia, Age of Conan, Warhammer, Runes of Magic, Rappelz, Archlord, Knight online, King of Kings, Kal online, Last chaos
If you like PvP...go play GW/EVE/L2 or wait until Darkfall. If you will buy it anyway...well, you have been warned.
all those games have flaws aswell.. GW = cant jump, EVE = plays itself, L2 = asian game.. says it all.
so the best bet is wait for darkfail, and cry
Want to play: Lego Universe
Buy Warhammer and make a toon on AZAZEL.
Over 200+ PVPing in RVR every night.
Tactics are being used now. Dragonwake is the usual battle zone. Guilds are not just taking BO's but they are taking choke point and the high ground. I've been jumped by a warband of destro hiding behind trees and rocks along the main road to COF. Also seen destro use flanking manuvers in large scale PVP.
Great PVP. Spent 7 hours last night just in RVR.
YES BUY IT, GO TO GAMERANKINGS, READ THE REVIEW IT GOT STELLAR REVIEWS. a lot of bitter, haters on this board. get advice from the professionals, who don't hate and look at the game as a whole.
I want to thank everyone who posted. It's friday and I thought I'd tell you what I ended up doing.
I'm still enjoying WoW... I realized alot of my misery comes from being on a server with a low population, so I decided to pay $25 to transfer my level 67 to another server and wait for the expansion. The recomendations to wait until December weighed heavily on my decision and even though there were alot of positive posts, I decided that I didn't want to move to Warhammer while it seemed to still be under construction.
I don't want the same thing to happen with warhammer, that happened with Age of Conan, which was I quit and hated it so much I never went back (and still don't have the slightest desire to).
I will buy Warhammer eventually because I'm an old fan of Warhammer, but I'm going to wait til I get the impression that it's a finished product.
If you're reading this, you probably need to get some sun.
Beta was better than release. Do not buy this game. Get Fable 2 or Fallout or something.
i think you misunderstood. warhammer is not broken like aoc was. it is simply dead, due to too much player spread (too many servers). therefore, you cant do public quests, pvp or even many solo quest, which require you to kill enemy players. to me this is frustrating, but warhammer has no bugs that would spoil your game experience. game is pretty polished
and speaking of aoc, you would better take a closer look at that game again. i read its completely different now, in positive way.
