"To date, 68 per cent of the players who listed Age of Conan as their reason for cancellation and 46 per cent of the players who listed Warhammer as their reason for cancellation have reactivated their subscriptions to World of Warcraft." Blizzard's CEO, Mike Morhaime
"Even though the quarter was book-ended by competitors in the MMO space, the World of Warcraft subscriber base continues to grow.
War details, guess War may not break 1M paying subscribers; even though 1.5M copies were shipped to retailers and not counting direct download.

I bet more have returned than that because when I quit mmorpgs I never give a reason and if it makes me then I just pick something random so I know alot of other people will do the same too,
I think 90% of all WOW players will return at some point.
That is kinda what I think. The majority of players don't say they are quitting to go to another game. The ones that usually do that are the ones who are trying to make a statement to Blizzard " I quit, Warhammer rules"... and those are the ones that now are coming back with their tails between their legs.
It would be pretty funny if Blizzard gave an ingame item to players who go out of their way to say what game they are quitting WOW for, and then come back within a month.
Ironically, if you read the AOC forums, you see some of the same thing happening there. People are actually posting that they are coming back to AOC from warhammer.
IM not surprised about the AoC numbers
the WAR numbers are probably right too
However, how many of those who resubbed will leave to return to AoC or WAR...probably a decent number. There was a reason all those players left in the first place. I expect WAR and WoW to do nicely over the next year. AoC, I dont know its fate
MMORPG Characters immortalized!
LLyncu: Star Wars Galaxies (Chimaera)
Xiode: Age of Conan (Mannanan)
When you try to cancel your subscription, you are asked for a reason. You have to put a reason, even if it's anything. So from all the players that, when they quit, put in either WAR or AoC as the reason they quit, well, that's where they get the numbers.
--------------------------------------------------------------------
WoW: 70 NE Rogue(Akama)
FFXI: 75DRK/37WAR/18SAM/12THF(Fenrir)
Currently playing: Warhammer Online(or at least trying to).
What they DONT tell you is how many people are subscribed to both, and play both, like myself. Blizzard has a habit, especially it's simple minded item-fed fanbois, to think linear and that you can only play one MMO.
{ Mod Edit }
War has went over 800K in subscribers .. so where are they all coming from ? (not saying they are coming from WOW) but the point is this.... they are still doing well, growing etc .. so who cares who goes back to WOW or another game, many are playing more than one game also.
War will surive as will WOW, LOTR and many others .. saying that 70% or any other % for that matter have gone back to a game doesn't really tell you anything. Doesnt tell you if they are still playing WAR or not. So as long as WAR is growing in population who cares who goes back to another game ?
I quit WoW to play WAR, I put slow release of content as my reason.
Quoting crap like this is like people using Xfire as a reliable source of data.
Well you are looking at the figure's as a postive,me I see them as a negative, those players quit for a reason and went back for the lack of a game,Now the way I see it those player numbers you boast about will stick around for the expac but then give them time and then bored of that.
Dont get me wrong here I like the number's for mmo player's but I think they only play and go back to WoW as a lack of anything else to do...now how long will that last?
Every game you cheer that fails,I lose faith in the mmo genre.....is a shame really.
If someone had came up to me in 1980 when I was on my Atari 2600 and said we will be playing games with thousands of people at the same time.I guess my response would have been,"but I only have 2 joysticks"
http://www.mmorpg.com/discussion2.cfm/thread/235780/page/8
Those percentages will be higher after WOTLK.
These newer MMORPGs are shiny and new, but nothing more than a passing fancy. People have had time to get "bored of WoW", they've had 4 years to grow tired of it, but they keep coming back. Guess they'd rather be bored in WoW than entertained in AoC or WAR
I guess it's kind of ironic. When I was deeply infatuated with EQ, I thought there would be no way that WoW could possibly be a better game. Now it turns out that WoW is not only the better game, but better than all of it's would-be successors so far as well.
It's very dissapointing. I don't have any particular allegiance to WoW, I have an allegiance to wanting to play good games. And if given a choice to play a game that was nearly as good I would play it for the change. But games like AoC and WAR don't even come close, especially not in terms of longevity. Once the sparkle of a new game and new community wears off, you really start to appreciate the depth that WoW has. (I hear furious shaking of heads in the background)
Not that I expect anyone around here to agree with me on this, of course. But then, this is a minority, hardcore, opinionated, vocal, and mostly irrelevant community that is thinks that WoW is overrated. I wish it were overrated, then I would have more choices of games to play. Sadly, WoW is where it's at, and where it's been for the past 4 years.
I don't have anyhting against non-WoW games though, don't get me wrong. Well that's it for me tonight, I'm off to laugh at the dwindling WAR subscriber numbers! Toodles!
Still waiting for your Holy Grail MMORPG? Interesting...
In all honesty I don't think Conan and Warhammer caused very many active WoW subscribers to quit. I think the bulk of those people had already long since quit WoW and were trying other games until the 2 promised land games came out.
This press release is a little misleading IMHO, but it is still interesting.
Not to be a troll but seriously WAR is growing?
I quit WoW for War and quit War to go back to my first MMO FFXI. Ive searched and played many games but still I always come back to that game. Its just the best game for me, there is just no other mmo out there like it.
Im sure a lot of people are doing the same thing I am, they are searching for something better than WoW, and some may find while others will not. I just didn't feel there was enough teamwork envolved in WoW.
i think there's a saying... 99% of statistics are full of shit... or something along those lines...
-----------------------------
IVE PLAYED WOW AND LIKED IT SO IM A FANBOI PLZ FLAME MY THREADS CUZ I MIGHT MENTION WOW
I recon, percantages on the internet is like looking into a deep well at night time and saying how deep it is.
What do you mean:
"There's lies, damn lies, and statistics?"
Or
"65% of statistics are made up on the spot?" (har har)
I don't think there was one that explicitly said that statistics are shit. I don't think either of those apply to this situation. The figures would be easy to interpret and there would be little room for manipulation of the data.
Of course, not everyone who quit WoW and are now playing AoC or WAR actually put playing those games as the reason for leaving. But for the people THAT DID, that percentage of those people have come back. It's important you interpret that information correctly.
Yeah, it doesn't include people that want to play both games, but does this make the statistics less meaningful? That's what statistics are, after all, giving meaning to raw data.
Still waiting for your Holy Grail MMORPG? Interesting...
They are both good games. However, WoW is less reliant on a healthy server population than WAR. In WAR, if you don't have people to play with, the fun factor takes a noze dive. In WoW, even in low populated servers there are plenty of things to do. The problems start in WoW low populated servers if you want to start a raid progression guild. Then it's very hard to find decent people to recruit.
Remember me saying 6 weeks ago ...
"Every copy sold of War is free publicity for WotLK."
Meaning: if you want to play a new MMORPG and that new experience is not even half the experience you have in Wow than of course you return to wacth the NEW episode of your better experience.
I knew this the moment I played WAR (or Conan for that matter). I thought THIS is never ever going to stick to PvP fans of WOW.
And yes I am talking PvP here (not even talking about the lacking populations, lacking PVE raid content).
Now the only thing needed was a new world PvP system, like in Lake Winter with far more siege options than War and you'll be certain most will come back..
If you are used to a Ferrari, an old East German Trabant with a broken engine is not going anywhere except to blinded fans.
----
And lets be reasonable: almost 50% returning from War after ... being published for ... 6 weeks. That's saying most didn't even feel the need to level up past Tier 3.
And this for the guys stating right in the face of Blizzard they left for War, so the return rate is even far more, because face it: those guys came back within weeks with their pants down.
Just like I said: War is boring after 7 days of playing.
Every copy sold of War is free publicity for WotLK.
No they are NOT.
You see WAR servers were full/full for the vast majority in its first 2 weeks. Because they had 500K at launch and 250K new users in 3 weeks time.
That was launch hype. Then came play value ....
In October the massive exit began and the servers became empty with 50% on low/low. So they needed to empty the low/low servers to save the medium ones. A nice word is "server merges" after 5 weeks.
if the game was as good as Wow, the people wouldn't be leaving the servers after 3 weeks and even before the free time was over. Now that the game falls short in staying with the better sold games category, the new blood dries up and War follows the same way as all those other "Wow killers".
When are you going to see through the play value of new MMO's?
As for low populated Wow servers, you haven't been playing lately ...:))).
I sub both, so I get all the tasty features.
Really, two diff games. Plus I hate raids.
And boring after 7 days? You my friend have never tried levelling a retri Paladin through STV for the second time.
Sorry for the short post, I have work now.
PvP is in it's own league in WAR and I fear that WoW will never catch up. WoW has other strengths, open world PvP is not one of them. From my point of view WAR is suffering from bad marketing decisions (that kept the server population artificially low to present big server numbers). WoW is a great game with plenty of things to occupy you for years. I don't think they'll ever capture however the feel of open world PvP on the healthy populated WAR servers and that's because of the obsession with arena play and the e-sport nonsense.
Edit: Back when WoW launched it had to compete with EQ2. And EQ2 was hardly the game it grew up to be. So the environment (and perhaps the potential for growth) was completely different back then.
Again someone who wants to post and didn't even play a Retri pala in these last 2 weeks ))
yes Borehammer is boring and www.xfire.com proves it just HOW boring it is for the most players.
These last two weeks are an anomaly, as it were the last two weeks pre-TBC launch. I hope that the retadins are raid viable at level 80, since I have friends that play them and were waiting years (some of them are playing from launch) for some good news in this department.
Very immature and funny claim from Blizzard CEO.
When I played WoW, like when it was launched, I had a huge guild. Tons of friends. About 40-50 that I know.
We all quit WoW 3 months after TBC because of grindfest , faction crap and pure boredom. The guild disbanded obviously. None, and I am pretty sure of this fact, none of us ever returned back to WoW or thought about returning back to WoW.
I am sure that pretty much sums it. WoW has 2.5m NA and 2 million European subscribers, the rest is from Asia for a total of 11 million.
I think that in the last 4 years after WoW's release, a minimum of 30-40 million has played WoW at least once. So 60-80% of the players who quit WoW NEVER return back to WoW.
Sure there are like 400-500k people who loves to hop from MMO to MMO and eventually back to WoW. But the majority never returns back to WoW.

yes Borehammer is boring and www.xfire.com proves it just HOW boring it is for the most players.
Warhammer was fun for about a month here, It was really fun at first I give them that but the game just lacked depth in every aspect . I played WoW two months before I played WAR and 12 months of fand on over a 2 year time span. Both of those games just din't do it for me.
This is hilarious, there is another post about un professional CEO's and here we have the richest CEO/game going and there using lame tactics like this?
Why would Blizzard announce this?Do they need money? NO.
DO they need subscriptions?NO.
Perhaps they are rubbing it in?telling us there game is the greatest and all other games are so bad players will return to wow? That is pretty lame when comes from a developer who is raping the public off of a COPIED game from EQ.If this guys wants to BRAG i would love a personal interview with him.I would LOVE to ask him why Vivendi wanted to sell his gaming division if it was predicted to be such a great success?oh maybe no one had any confidence in blizzard?I would love to ask him why there game looks so much like EVERQUEST,pretty much EXACTLY the same game? Why couldn't Blizzard with all there money/manpower create there OWN game? instead of copying EQ?I would love to ask there CEO why they embed everyone's game with an illegal program? And yes i consider it illegal if i do not approve of it on my machine,i would suspect others feel the same.Just because you agree to there TOS,does not mean you ACTUALLY do agree to it,people just click for the purpose of playing, the LAWS need changing there bigtime.
Better yet i would just love to hear his response as to WHY he posted this? How often do we EVER hear WOW talk about how great there game is?never it is ALWAYS talk about SUBSCRIPTIONS.They want people to believe there game is the best because they have the subscriptions lol. Most developers try to explain there game or there content when encouraging people to play there product ,not BLizzard they stick to superficial B/s,a reason i can't stand Blizzard.
"PLAY OUR GAME EVERYONE ELSE IS" how lame is that?
Never forget 3 mile Island and never trust a government official or company spokesman.
