BioWare's Halloweeners Mock Their Own Giant Lightsabers [Picture]

Star Wars: The Old Republic developers BioWare Austin seem to be well aware of just how out of proportion those in-game lightsabers are, going by the Jedi costumes at the developers Halloween bash. This midichlorian-packed match up should look familiar to those of us following the LucasArts-BioWare MMO, if a bit exaggerated. We're pretty sure dude on the left is supposed to be a Sith, by the way, and not FBI special agent Johnny Utah from Point Break.

Why do I write, create, fantasize, dream and daydream about other worlds? Because I hate what humanity does with this one.

BOYCOTTING EA / ORIGIN going forward.

Yeh it's funny until you find out that Lucas Arts wanted them and the game ends up shipping with comic book characters and giant lightsabers.

LOL well atleast they acknowledge the fact right?  What worries me though is that in that recent article they said they actually wanted the lightsabers to be bigger than how they were in the movies.  I just hope they get this "cartoon" style out of their heads and start producing Star Wars lol.  I'm not too worried, however, as Bioware is a great gaming company and has the resources to pull this mission off succesfully.

Yeah I remember something about the size representing 'epicness'.  I hope it was a sick joke... because the game will look like Carrot Tops Gag Bag otherwise.

I doubt the size thing will stick around... visuals of the game are by far the biggest 'critique' so far but there's plety of time to work that out, and it's usually among the last things to get a huge load of info.  The 'guts' of the game along with the foundation are what need to be set up most importantly.  Graphical tweaking will come along just fine, I'm certain of it.

DO we even need to question this? People stop overreacting please (directed to about everyone)

Don't WORRY about anything at such an early state. If it's BETA you can be worried but for now, chill :P

This picture makes me laugh each time I see it.

    Thanks for sharing this.

It gives me hope that they will change the proportions of the weapons although I read that it will only be slightly as they want the weapons to feel and look 'oversized'.

It's hard to tell from a few screenshots just how this will come across during actual gameplay.

It looks very wrong right now, but it could be one of those things that you quickly get used to, we'll just have to wait and see.

The size of the lightsaber in the picture is fine, as it will not be something like car keys that you set down and then can't fine later.  And when you see it from a couple miles away, you will be like....OH DAMN, THERE'S A JEDI!!!

My only critique would be that it appears to be too smooth, and during a strenuous, prolonged battle it might slip out of the combatants hand.  Wrapping the handle with sandpaper or large rubber bands could increase the traction of grip.

To be fair, we're talking about trained force users here. They can sheathe their lightsabers without touching them, I'm sure they doin't have to worry about having a grip on their weapons.

Art assets are the by far the biggest, most expensive component of MMOG development if what I've read is true.  Once an art direction is chosen it's unlikely to be changed drastically once resources are committed and work begun. It's exactly the kind of high level decision you would expect to come from LA.

They look to be going for a noticibly stylized look with a soft color palatte.  I just hope I can get past that and get into the content.

Uhm, no one is in distress about it. You should focus more on your reading comprehension young padawan.

Not only does this show Bioware to be a company with a sense of humor but that they're actually paying attention to what the community is saying and *understanding* it.

Too often you see Developers who claim to be following the community but are completely disconnected from what the community is saying.

Although this was just for fun, it shows a bit about Bioware that makes me look forward to their game.

Thanks but it's all good. Though there's far too much "ZOMG ZABORS LOOKS LIKE SHIET!! GRAFS SUXX" stuff going an at such an early state. Which is ridiculous. People need to chill out about such stuff.

I agree one hundred percent, it really makes them seem down to earth, regular people like the rest of us - that actually listen to what fans are saying.

I can see your epitaph now, on the day you expire. It will read "Wasted Potential".

Lol good stuff. So far the most encouraging thing about this project is the developers are already listening to the consumer and making changes accordingly something that murdered SWG 3 years ago.

Far too much? Comon....all the fans want a Star Wars game....not some cheap cartoony knock off. Compare what is being released to screen shots of the console versions of KOTOR. A huge difference. When players/fans start settling for less and say "its ok its only beta" you are going to get a crappy game. I mean Lucas made that Clone Wars cartoon network show and this game is looking like that!!! Everyone thought SWG is going to die when this title comes out but I think the way its going is this TOR is going to save SWG.
