Which Race?

shai-lashai-la Member Posts: 6

Hi folks,

Used to play EvE two years ago and quit after playing for a year, nothing to do with the game, RL was just cutting in to much. Have decided to return and was wondering which race to start as a lot has changed since my time.

Used to fly minmater, and am now thinking of flying Gallentte purely since I loved the drones but wondered if you could advise if another race would be more fun for pvp/mission running

Ship wise i would go for Gallente especially if you are interested in PvP. When it comes to bloodlines id go for any of them as they are all pretty much the same in the end.

With Gallente There drones are still pretty good and with the new utility drones they are even better but we also ahve the Blasters which are a great wepon to use in both PvP and PvE, of course you do need to get close but when your skills get pretty good in that area of gunnery that dont matter so much as you can do a lot of damage fast.

Another great example of Moore's Law. Give people access to that much space (developers and users alike) and they'll find uses for it that you can never imagine. "640K ought to be enough for anybody" - Bill Gates 1981

Go for the race you like most look-wise, weapon-wise. At the moment, most people would tell you that Gallente has some problems in pvp but when I started they told me that Amarr had problems, now everyone says Amarr is FoTM. Balance in EvE is an everchanging thing at the mercy of developers. At the end of the day though, no FC will reject you to join a gang because of the race you fly. As long as you have a good group of friends that you enjoy playing with, you'll have fun.

As to the race of your character, this wiki page helped me when I started:

    wiki.goonfleet.com/index.php

I'd say, Caldari Achura and Amarr Khanids are the best bloodlines stat-wise. Don't forget, you can train any race with your character, so your starting race does not have any effect on your performance in pvp.

Whatever you pick, if you plan to train for combat, make sure to keep your perception and intelligence higher than the other attributes and charisma lowest.

If you are set on picking Gallente as your race, I'd say Jin-Mei is the best bloodline for combat. Stay away from Intaki.....you don't want 3 base perception

    Character wise:

Make sure you like the looks and background of the char/race, looking like dogbarf does not make up for slightly higher stats imo. Also make sure your stats are evenly spread while keeping charisma low and somewhat focussing on perception. It's almost impossible to make a Gallente or Amarr character with proper stats, So you're best off so either make a Caldari (Achura has the best stats but I couldn't play them) or Minmatar char. What's wrong with your old char btw, if you played that for a while it'll have decent training.

    Ship wise:

There's a lot of changes coming and it'll be a while before the storm will have settled and we can see how it really affects things. For missions Gallente droneboats still are very good and will remain so, for PVP it all depends on what type of PVP. For fleets Amarr is very good, same for gatecamps and stuff like that. Small remote repping gangs do well with Dominixes as usual. I do see some hope for the Tempest with the changes at hand although it will always be low on DPS and tank.

Solo/small gang it's a tossup between Gallente and Minmatar, Gallente's way of fighting is in your face Mike Tyson style while Minmatar tend sto be the difficult to hit , slippery tactician. Personal preference.

The choice of race depends a lot on two factors,

    1) RP : Do you want RP, if so then find the race that fits the RP you will enjoy. From a pure RP perspective the Minmatar and Amarr are the best as they have the most support with RP corporations.

    2) Ease of early play: for this I did a blog peace, the Caldari are the EASIEST to start from scratch with, followed by the Gallente, Amarr and finally the Minmatar.

If you like drones, ie a pet class, then the Gallente offer the most options, however the Amarr and Minmatar both have some very nice drone ships at the cruiser level.

For pure speed of mission running the Caldari seem the best with their no miss missile system. For PVP there is really no one best race.

Personally I am enjoying the challeneges of the Minmatar.

real question is why start a new character? even with the changes the loss of a years worth of training would make it very unappealing to reroll.  worst case scenario you upgrade your character on the path it was where you more and likely aren't that far behind or you start on a new path and you have all your Learnings, assets, and common skills already trained a bit.

Thanks to all for your replies, really helped me out,

Am starting a new character for a couple of reasons, Wanted a challenge of a new race, feel more confident with starting with some base knowledge so have a better idea what I want and most importantly am starting with a couple of friends who have never played before so we can all be at the same level

IMHO Amar and Gallente are on par in terms of skills needed for gunships. Both use guns and both armor rep for tanking purposes and drones skills can be kept minimal for scout drones. Gallente have the option of gaining some very nice drone ships though if you want to be drone boat pilot.

Caldari are the best at Mission/Complex running and Ratting IMHO and can be trained in a quick fashion if you know what to train. Minmitar on the other hand are the most skill intensive race in the game as they need gun skills, missile skills, drone skills and have ships that vary from armor tanking to shield tanking as well as some ships that have speed bonuses so that means navigation skills are gonna be a must. Of course once you have enough skills to pilot the majority of Mimi ships you can then easily cross train for other race ships.

Games I've played/tried out:WAR, LOTRO, Tabula Rasa, AoC, EQ1, EQ2, WoW, Vangaurd, FFXI, D&DO, Lineage 2, Saga Of Ryzom, EvE Online, DAoC, Guild Wars,Star Wars Galaxies, Hell Gate London, Auto Assault, Grando Espada ( AKA SoTNW ), Archlord, CoV/H, Star Trek Online, APB, Champions Online, FFXIV, Rift Online, GW2.

    Game(s) I Am Currently Playing:

    GW2 (+LoL and BF3)

NOTE: You can train any race on one character. So you dont need to pick a race just to fly that races' ship if you follow.

There are only 2 reasons to pick a race in EVE:

    1) Roleplay

    2) Optimization

Optimization is the most logical path. This means you pick Caldari Achura or Amarr Cyberknight.

The key- these races have low CHA. This means you will have accelerated learning over everyone else because Charisma blows chunks. It just not worth stating at all really. Just get the learning skills for CHA and Implants and you set

Get EVEHQ. Give it a really, really long plan with the skills you think you may want. Tell it to organize the results based on shortest training path. If you have a diverse plan, you will most likely see Caldari Achura top the charts. Now if the plan is narrowly focused and short, another race may be suggested. But rarely do you meet a 'main' avatar for a player and that character is narrowly specialized on a training path

Note- EVE is nothing like other MMOs.

At anytime in EVE, you can 'level yourself' down to fight alongside friends. I sued to do it all the time. If I wanted to help a buddy with a Level 1 mission I'd grab a frigate and Bam- I'm challenged by the content just like they are

Only reason I tend to outperform them is because I had vastly more experience fitting my ships and flying them

Charisma is useful if you want to fly command ships, and for social skills;  EVEmon is the program you want for skill planning, and EFT(Eve Fitting tool) to go over ship fits..check eve forums, you'll find links and info on both.
