A work in progress: (Update: 08/09/10)Easily find your favorite type of MMO
For great crafting try Vanguard or Star Wars Galaxies. Both games give you the possibility to be a crafter first and adventurer second.
Personally I would suggest Star Wars Galaxies because of its housing system, factories(which also have to be crafted) and player vendors. In the case of Star Wars Galaxies check first which servers are most active and find yourself a guild.
Games like WoW/LOTRO and EQ2 also have crafting, but are more evolved around adventure and combat. Crafting is second grade (or even worse).
well i supose you like gaming and crafting and a good familiar game look once hero online i play it 3years now its quit addictive)..... and the game is evolving to hero online 2 and ya can craft evrything)
You've been given some decent suggestions here, but I too am a crafter, and personally, I have to disagree with the person that put down the crafting in EQ2. HONESTLY, of all the games listed above (and I've played every one mentioned except Wurm Online (which for SOME reason, I could never get to function well)....EQ2 was by FAR the most involved crafting. And crafted items actually SELL and make you quite a nice "living" in that game, as well.
For people that want to actually do more than push one single button that pops out a nicely crafted item, at least EQ2 FEELS more like you're actually DOING something, besides just "gather mats, push button, poof....creation made." To me, most other games have ridiculously boring crafting.
If you like CRAFTING....EQ2 warrants a DEFINITE try. It's also still a pretty populated game. I don't know the exact subscriber base, but you're never ALONE in empty zones, that much I can say for sure, and the community is among the best in MMO gaming, as well.

I agree. EQ2 has one of the best crafting systems I've ever used, really the only one that I've actually been able to take.

Waiting for: anything better than whats out now.
Wait till Darkfall comes out. It is the best game ever for Husbands and Wives. It will blow away all other MMORPGs when it comes to being fun for Husbands and Wives. Just kidding. EQ2 crafting was very involved, way to involved for me. Everything took so many steps. You want to build a chest? Ok you need 10 items. First item a board. You want to make a board? Ok, you need 10 items. First item a saw. You want to make a saw? Ok, you need ten items. Anyways that's waht it seemed like to me.
perhaps this one: ve3d.ign.com/videos/play/37089/PC/Aion-Tower-of-Eternity
This video is of one type of craft, there are 4 I think: www.gametrailers.com/player/usermovies/133541.html
Velika: City of Wheels: Among the mortal races, the humans were the only one that never built cities or great empires; a curse laid upon them by their creator, Gidd, forced them to wander as nomads for twenty centuries...

Even though I do not play Vanguard any more I have great memories of my crafting days there. In fact I would have crafted more than fought and that is a good sign. You gain levels in Crafting and there are missions you can complete to gain better items. The clothes you wear give you buffs as well as the type of tools. There is a mini game so making an item can be challenging if attempted too early. I liked it because I could sit on Vent or TS and chat to my mates while we all crafted away. A nice touch is when you are in a group you get to see what the other players are making to. Its such a shame I have not seen a crafting system like this again in other games. AoC could do with this for example.
Well that will be AoC hands down. There are so many couples that play AoC that really enjoy it. The game offers more looks for females (lets face it a orc woman is not really that flatering). You wife would really like that. Also the new PvP system works in your favour as you can support eachother in combat and level in the PvP domain if you'd like.
Darkfall
Don't be terrorized! You're more likely to die of a car accident, drowning, fire, or murder! More people die every year from prescription drugs than terrorism LOL!
I know a game which has a lot of opportunities regarding crafting and player driven economy. It isn't an easy game cuz it's an Asian grinder. Myself, I played it for 2 years. It's Lineage 2. I don't even have a maximum lvl char but I become a billionaire in Lineage2 just by crafting and trading. As I said: Not everybody's darling game but regarding crafting: unique
A game I beta tested that had a real crafting base was pirates of the burning sea no one person can craft effectively so A duo would be perfect. also saga of ryzom has crafting from level 1. Any EQ has tons of crafting (although I personnelly steer clear of anything $ony) My friend plays vanguard and told me he crafts alot and makes good gold. You allready know about eve if you carft well in that game you can play for free basicly. I hear that crafting is getting good in warhammer at higher end.
It took me about 1 hour to go from 0-200 crafting in WAR .. So its pretty pointless since anybody can do the same. EQ2 probably is at the top of best crafting systems in place.
If you would allow EVE's ship building to be crafting, that would be the best. After that, EQ2 is the best.
Let me guess... you didn't even read the contents of his post... especially since you're suggesting games for all other reasons except the one he listed. Good job, way to go.
Anyways.... When I gave EQ2 a test drive I felt the crafting was fairly involved. You'd have to actively monitor what you're doing and would have to remove impurities as you're making stuff, or add specific ingredients as the item is being created. I thought this was a very interesting take on crafting and wish more games would do the same. I'm a firm believer that crafting of any kind should be a valid option in regards to fun, effectiveness and even advancement.
I also gave LOTRO a shot about a week ago. Their crafting is the whole "gather resources and push some buttons" but it wasn't all that bad. You can go get the trial yourself and give it a shot as well. Other then that, I have no other suggestions.
No required quests! And if I decide I want to be an assassin-cartographer-dancer-pastry chef who lives only to stalk and kill interior decorators, then that's who I want to be, even if it takes me four years to max all the skills and everyone else thinks I'm freaking nuts. -Madimorga-
Darkfall, Expansion for couples.
If you like Crafting/Manufacturing then try either Everquest 2 or Vanguard. Both offer some of the best crafting MMO's have to offer. Vanguard also has a third sphere apart from the typical 2 that is Diplomacy. From a crafting standpoint, I have to give my vote to Vanguard. Im really torn between which game I prefer, Vanguard or EQ2. What EQ2 lacks, it makes up in its artwork and character models. Both games are very content filled. Vanguard is a little more computer hungry.
AoC will not really suit you since crafting in the game requires you to be level 40 to begin, not to mention without a strong guild you wont be able to craft certain things.
Darkfall, well I wouldnt recommend anyone to "wait" on that game. You sound like you guys want something to play 'now' anyway.
"If you want a picture of the future, imagine a robot foot stomping on a human face -- forever."
I haven't played many mmo's but the best crafting system I experienced I think it would have to be Everquest 2. That game also have beautiful graphics.
Anarchy online also got alot of crafting, but you have to get xp points from battle to craft in that game. So you have to level up to craft.
Have fun
A Tale in the Desert is pretty much all crafting or things to do with crafting. It's definitely not for everyone though and it'd probably be a good idea to wait to start the game until they do the next 'telling', which from the looks of it might start in the next few months.
For some people the game is just what they need, for most it's lacking something or other, but it is fun in its own way. It's nice in a different way than most MMOGs. Never before or again will you have been so happy to find a sheep or a patch of mushrooms than you'd be in ATITD after a few days of playing.
