RPers: Is TCoS the game for us?

glordglord Member UncommonPosts: 338

I'm probably moving to TCoS from CoH when TCoS is out. CoH is too 'child friendly' as far as violence goes.

Do any other roleplayers think this will be the game for us?

Im a RPer and im very eager to play TCoS. A good character cusomization and a non item based gameplay is a RPers dream MMO.

There are 'items' in this game, they are called sigils. You will be required to quest and win sigils as you would gear in other games in order to use them to imporve your character. They serve the same purpose as gear  in terms of game design, albeit 'low powered' gear. Low powered or not though, you WILL need them to compete with the other players out there, so you WILL be questing etc to get them.

I don't know why people are struggling with this tbh.

I believe he is pointing out that the possibility to make your character look like a Firemage with cool red robes is tehre even if the most epic robe you can get is pink it doesnt matter, since Items doesnt make the stats, only sigils/Tatoots and whatnot.

    Thats my guess thou.

They are not the same as epic items. They have only slight effects on your character stats and damage. two level 50 characters one with full sigils and one without, the one with sigils will not automatically win against the one without .

Think many are goin off topic with discussion of Sigils rather than answering the OPs question about RP.

I personally hope to find a decent RP communinty in this game. Reguardless of you sigils, it looks like we will get very nice cusomization to our chars in COS. Which I find helps alot with the RP community. It is hard to RP when you all look the same, have the same stats, armor, gear.

i considder myselve as light rp meaning i want to play in character and dive into the lore but im not hardcore rp enough to sit for an hour in a tavern just having  conversations

from both these aspects i think tcos did their homework in creating a unique and exotic setting free from typical clichees, dwarfs and elves with strong lore to back it up

im definitly trying out the game, i even ordered the premium edition at amazon today wich i find reasonable priced compared to some other launches recently

In all honesty, I'm glad theres a game where 'loot lovers' can go bitch about being unable to 'progress'. With loot-based gameplay, there is no 'progression'. Just getting better loot to get into a better instance/zone to get slightly better loot.

As a rper I am looking forward to the game. The world is different than the normal fantasy and honestly I need that. I'm a bit worn on elves, orcs, etc. Nothing against them but I am ready for a different setting and this should be refreshing to rp in this environment. Of course the fact that I like to pve and pvp a lot helps since this blends those elements but that's off topic *smiles*

The lore is rich and deep. I really like where they went with the story in regards to this world, the Oracle and the individual Houses.

As for the sigil conversation, what the OP meant was that you can wear what you wish no matter stats or what not because as a rpers that dictated what we could and could not wear. After all, who's going out to kill a dragon in slacks and a shirt? Sometimes your outfit is what you are known by and defines you and this characterization in this game will actually allow that. Maybe you want to be the warrior wearing a robe as if you are a warrior priest of sort. Or maybe you wish to be the mage heavily plated like a warrior mage, etc. That is his meaning.

Anyway, hopefully this can be the game for me because I am worn of bouncing around and got friends ready to join up if that is the case.

hmm....yeah! It was kinda the look of the character i was speaking about here.  And i just have a feeling that the "questing" for sigils wont be such a big thing as "questing" for über items in WoW is.

Seriously thou, i do not care much if the big time raiders have big advantages over me in fights, as long as getting that gear was hard also (WoW honor gear is prime example of pure shit), aslong as the gear you can get by events (like one time spawn bosses), epic time consuming questlines or like epic farming 5k rats for Ratdooms left glove are fairly on par with the raid gear.

If its easy to get(i.e soloable by casual player) it should take a freaking long time to get, unlike raid/rating gear wich can go in short time but will take friends/organisation and so on instead.

The best thing about spellborns item system is that those ratdooms left glove i was talking about wont be some shitty rag looking gloves that misfits with my plate armor of the shutgarrian doomsmiths!

Im also in love with the way they are taking endgame PvE, smallgroup content FTW! - all dungeons should be made for small group content imo. Leave raids for epic bosses and events, theres no need to make a raidgroup for that, just include questslines and eventquests that needs you to participate and zerg the bosses with shitloads of 4man groups :) - Raids are shitloads of soldiers in a chaotic battle, not exactely 25ppl dancing around a dragon.

Lineage2 has it pretty much covered and is similar (althou everything else differs compared to spellborn)

most day to day hunting and dungeonrunning is in small groups of 2-9, the big clans go for the epic bosses and raidbosses on weekends with either perfect groups with great teamwork to minimize the number of player needed, or on epic bosses where the more the better, zerg the dragon with a big raid! (ppl die like flies).

This is where i hope Spellborn will go(or any other mmo for that matter), day to day hunting and dungeon running will be in small packs (including the really hard bosses that has a hard cap on numbers of players fighting it), with events and epic raidbosses having close to unlimited numbers (or a limit far above whats really needed - zerging is a valid and often fun tactic!) for ultimate raid chaos - preferaby with pvp involved in the mix to spice it up, One can atleast dream :)

edit- saw that i went way oftopic there o_0 - sry bout that.

The best thing about not having armor with stats is that you can fight naked and suffer no penalty!  That's roleplay isn't it?

    Okay here's a good link:

    Dress to Impress

Like City of Heroes, I'm sure you'll find that items are useful to you. However, unlike other games, gear weigh in much less in combat. As detailed in developer combat videos, you use your personal player skill to decide hit/miss.

I feel that using your own personal skill assists in immersion greatly and will help enhance roleplay. When you swing at the creature and you're right uptop of him and 'connect' that is much more immersive then other mmos where you are clearly swinging right at a rat but yet you miss for no reason due to dice rolling in the background. So even if a player has all the best items they can acquire- they can still lose a fight in this game due to poor personal skill.

That makes the game more in line with shooters. In a shooter, you also have Classes and another player might also have a bigger gun he found on the map. But due to your personal skill- you can win the fight. That is the goal of this title

Being able to put on what you like for looks is also very nice and helps enforce roleplay. I never felt immersed in cookie cutter fantasy mmorpg where every mage wears a robe. Thats lame.

In this game, everyone can look unique. If you want to be a big guy for roleplay go for it. Make a big guy. Give him a shield. Make him a Warrior.

OR- make a scrawy little mage. Give him no armor.

These are the 2 biggest features of Spellborn

There will also be no raiding for items. So no outrageous grinds.

The only problem I forsee there is no way for pvpers to acquire sigils through pure pvp. That';s where I think they are making a huge mistake. PVPErs dont wanna be forced to even do a 4 man. We'd rather do 8 man PVP content for sigils or be able to loot them from another player

Usually by the time I hit max cap I dont want to Quest / dungeon crawl much anymore.

But at least you wont lose any battles due to sigils we expect. Since the devs seem keenly against grinding for items. But who knows games change overtime and usually for the worst. But no matter what you can dodge/aim here anyway. So your personal skill will always be a much more huge factor then gear regardless. So I dont fear uneven fights anyway

    Brave Sir Robin ran away.

    Bravely ran away, away!

When danger reared its ugly head,

He bravely turned his tail and fled.

Yes, brave Sir Robin turned about

    And gallantly he chickened out.

    Bravely taking to his feet

He beat a very brave retreat,

Bravest of the brave, Sir Robin!

Yes, I think this game will be fabulous for roleplayers.  Looking forward to seeing you there.
