Not of the quality Guild Wars offers, I hope future MMORPGS follow what Guild Wars has started.

Everyone knows the phrase you get what you pay for, well GuildWars just blew that out the water.  Being an EX Star Wars Galaxies player, I felt my 15 bucks a month was not justified with the games content, or lack of and fun factor.

Now GuildWars, the time I got to play it from the open E3 thing, I got hooked and so far is an awesome game for no fee.  People will say "but you still have to pay for the clients and Xpacs."  Well, I paid 80 bucks for my SWG collectors ED, and the Xpac is coming out for 30 bucks and I still have to pay 15 bucks a month (16 if you live in Texas like I do, TAXES) GW will still be a better game and a hell of a lot cheaper to play.

You still get what you pay for, I say. Guildwars, after release, will have to prove that they can support the game on that sort of business model before we should be making claims about anything.

Then again, in this high-competition MMOG market we are in, perhaps GW is just upping the bar that others may have to follow. Just remember, though, you have to run in the black for the thing to last and for others to follow.

well diablo2 didnt have a monthly fee and from what ive heard and seen from the e3 test Guild Wars isnt really a mmorpg (more like diablo 2 battlenet gameplay)
Only difference i can see is that they are using a graphical lobby + that you can battle other groups in the arena.

  • SilkGoDSilkGoD Member Posts: 7

you are still basically paying monthly. THey will be doing expansion packs every 3-4 months, that cost probably 20-40 dollars, so lets say its 4 months at 30.00, thats about 8.00 a month for the expansion.

On the other hand you don't have to buy the expansion if you don't want to, but I think most people do buy the expansions.

Either way though guild wars will continue to get your money through expansion packs which they know almost everyone will buy, but hey least its not 12.95 a month and 30.00 for expansion packs when they come out.

Oh, then this makes much more sense.

I have to make 2 correction here:

Expansion packs will be released every 6-9 month, not 3-4. You do not have to buy them, and you will still be able to compete with the people who has bought the expansion pack.

"Only difference i can see is that they are using a graphical lobby + that you can battle other groups in the arena. "

People will not run their own servers. Everything is controlled by Areanet. GuildWars is not a MMORPG, it is a CORPG(compedative online RPG). It feels more like a skill and PvP based MMORPG than D2 BN.

If you have any questions, head over to and feel free to ask  at http://www.rpgstars.com, or one of the other official fansites

They've never stated anything about expansion packs every 3-4 months.. although I've read this misinformation here a few times now.. they have stated several times that they will be every 6-9 months. Not that much more often than other mmorpg's.

i think going buy what they said on there website that they will not come out with om on a planed basis. for example one epansion pack could come out in 3 months and the next one might not come out until 7 months.

Well, it's actually 50% "real" MMORPG, 50% "D2-style" ARPG in my opinion...

sorry, thought 6-9 months was in the faq.. 6-9 months for each expansion was the estimate given on one of the fansite friday's.

I think they are being bold by trying this business model and I like it.  And they aren't sacrificing on the content.  I like the idea that they aren't going to be a traditional MMORPG, but still allow alot of those elements to seep through.  I think that because they are free they will draw alot of people, and because the game content is awesome, that they will keep those players.  Who doesn't like some guild on guild action every once in a while.  Just to prove whose boss. image

I couldn't disagree with the D2 comparison more...

    No point and click

    Graphically tis a gorgeous world

TONS of skills to be had

I cannot wait for this game to be released

  • dtritusdtritus Member Posts: 139

They will have to sell a LOT of boxes off the shelf to stay in buisness.

Unless it's being funded by some very wealthy person who doesn't mind taking a loss...

    Yeah, I'd do Betty....
But I'd be thinking about Wilma.

  • sipsik20sipsik20 Member Posts: 9

Yah, I like the idea of no monthly fee, I guess we have to wait and see if it's worth it or not. But I'm also guessing there will not be much of ingame customer service then, right?

I just dunno how they are gonna survive.  Bandwidth costs so much.  Okay I know that the creators of Guild Wars have programmed the game so it really does not take a lot of bandwidth to handle the game. But imagine if the game becomes very popular.  The servers could get overflooded and one of the worst possible scenarios to kill a MMORPG is none other than the three letter word known as LAG!

All other MMORPGs charge a monthly fee so they can own huge systems capable of handling so many players at once.  Heck I was shocked when I heard that Star Wars Galaxies and Planetside were being ran on the same servers!!!

Anyways, I have yet to play this game.  The screenshots look amazing!  Sorry to say but I find them even more nicer than Everquest 2.  Problem is, the game isn't being released until 2005. image

Everquest 2 is coming out next month... well nothing will stop me from buying Guild Wars when it's released.  No monthly fee!!!  Who could refuse!  Aw well, I'm hoping GW will kick EQ2's butt... that way I could cancel my EQ2 account, save money, and play a MMORPG that's just as good (or better)

Bandwidth cost are so lowered with their streaming technology... basicly, you don't need server to constantly run unplayed zones just in case someone runs by. Look at EQ, most, if not 30% of the zones are unused. Plus, the highest player count they currently handle in one instance is 48.

I would like to note:  Having MORE players means that the bandwidth problems should be LESS.  The fact that that doesn't happen in most MMORPGs pisses me off.

10 dollars would be quite enough to pay for the bandwidth of a player on Guild Wars...for around 6 months or so, at least.

10 dollars is more than enough to pay for the badnwidth of a dedicated player who stays on every second of a month on any other MMORPG.

Essentially, monthly fees are ripping you off, and remember, more players=more money to pay for bandwidth/servers.

well note that there is single player missions(which i heard of i read it either on like ebgames or gamestop or on guild wars web site). so they cant charge for a game with online play and single.

WoW EQ2 Guild Wars ?! I cant decide!

Anybody can charge for anything they like. Btw, this game is online-ONLY, not either/or like D2.
