EQ2 will be successful because of EQ. Mainy of us have wasted or lives on EQ and some will continue that with EQ2. Sony definitely has reutrning customers that will keep EQ2 alive and well. Like someone said, World of Warcraft and Everquest 2 seem like they will be more casual friendly as well as the hardcore. Vanguard is being headed by old EQ devs. This reason and this reason alone is causing me to step back from Vanguard and really what killed interest in it right away. I really don't agree with some of their beliefs when it comes to what makes a good game and what makes them interested. I really noticed this when SOE came out with Shadows of Luclin which as a result made traveling easier and leveling easier, and the game less like work and more open to the casual player. The people doing Vanguard are those that made the original EQ world and really would rather force grouping and long traveling it seems. I believe they basicly say as such or point to that in their FAQ when talking about their plans for Vanguard.
Vanguard looks really good, no doubt but I highly doubt it will kill Everquest 2 or Worlds of Warcraft. Both seem to be aiming at both casual and hardcore. After these year I think players have gotten their voice out, that while they enjoy a challenge and like to feel they are accomplishing things, I don't think anyone wants to feel that they are actually working while playing a game. Those that are really hardcore might really enjoy Vanguard or those that agree with the devs of the game. I know I won't really paying much attentiont to it, not my type of game.

Not necessarily. EQ was the idea of the people who are creating Vangaurd, Saga of Hero's. EQ was really only fun for me from Regular EQ, Kunark, and Velious, after that the game lost its fun and all it was was a cash spending fest on new expansions, upgarding hardware, upgrading computers.
The designers that designed famous dungeons like Lower Guk, Mistmoore, and other places like that are the ones that are helping design the places in Vangaurd.
Don't expect EQ2 to be anything like EQ1 was when you first started it. Expect Vanguard to .
I agree. EQ2 won't be like EQ1. SOE has constantly said that. Because of that I'd expect Vanguard to be different then EQ2 and the other games. Different teams, different ideas on what should be done and what shouldn't be done and how to expand things.
Suggesting that EQ2 will be killed by VSoH is kinda like suggesting that Ferarri will get killed by BMW.
Both (we hope) will produce a high quality product. But neither has exactly the same market.
My hope is that VSoH will bring back 'the vision', in moving away from the hand-holding and spoon-feeding that is dominating the newer MMO's. I believe that EQ2 is somewhat embrassing these things. Neither being wrong, neither being better. But certainly they are different, and appeal to different people.
The best thing that could happen is exactly the disparity in goals. Everyone has a chance to get closer to what they really want out of a game, and both games can have strong communities.
Vanguard has one compelling thing going for it that outshines all the rest (most of you know this, but I need to expound):
It has the soul of EverQuest--the game that kept people playing for years at a time. This is huge. You may think that EQ2 has EQ1 to learn from. All they have is intellectual property. I am looking forward to EQ2, so don't get me wrong, but Brad and friends have learned a lot and none of that inspiration is going into it. It's all going to Vanguard.
That's one of the main reasons Vanguard is one I am looking forward to with keen interest.
They also have Microsoft with their clout behind it. Some may cringe at this, but MS has a history of not meddling with the creative process. A friend of mine who used to work for Microsoft in the games department (he worked on UIs) was saying that Vanguard is a game to be looking forward to. Everything MS Games has is going into it, he said. Brad and company will have an awesome framework from which to build this beast. It will be the premier XBOX 2 and PC title of late 2005.
Its really 'the vision' that bothers me to be honest. I hope it does well but I"m just so glad that other companies have changed their visions and attmept to take different approaches.
At first I might be tempted to agree with you, but it's The Vision that kept me hooked and gave me that "feeling" that we EQ players can remember. I would tend to think that Vanguard will be a refined Vision, perhaps without the slag that we could do without.
This is a game to watch and wonder about. For those of us that got hooked onto origanal eq, we have been waiting for something to bring back what eq achieved. Alot of games have tried since with noone capturing what eq had.
With the limited information we have about Vanguard, we won't know for awhile exactly what they are doing in this game. The summit is soon which should release some information and I imagine as soon as wow and eq2 are released more information will come. No doubt Vanguard has a very talented team working on this game but time will tell as to how the game evolves.
Actually the original eq <none expansion> fanbois should go for Vanguard. I will probably play that as well as EQ2, was going to play WoW, but can only afford 3 mmorpgs. I guess I will have to settle for EQ2, Vanguard, and DDO.
Originally posted by aeric67 EQ2 is SOE's last chance with many gamers. I don't think they will let it fail easily. It's the flagship...
I truely doubt that. The reason I say that is the former lead designer from Ultima X: Odyssey is currently working for SOE on a project that hasn't been named yet and he said he wasn't working on EQ2. Not sure what his actual role is but as soon as he left EA, he announced he was working for SOE. There is a post about it on it at the forums at uxo.stratics.com. That is if the section hasn't been taken down already. I wouldn't be surprised if SOE was already working on another mmorpg of some kind already or in the process of developing one.
Oh I wouldn't be surprised either, but with the alleged failure of SWG, expansionitis of EQ, and the rejection of Planetside, I'd say that EQ2 is the last chance SOE has to impress the gamer community. After that they may be too lacking in credibility to convince us they can produce...
I guess someone could have said the same thing about SWG being the last straw, and some have already said that. The failure of EQ2 to impress will make it worse, no one can disagree with that. It needs to succeed, and I think SOE knows this.
EDIT: More than it just needing to succeed, I'd argue that it needs to steal marketshare from WoW to succeed. It's a precarious spot they're in right now.
Naaa,.. Although I believe Vanguard will indeed be a great game that many people will enjoy. I think the market for these types of games is large enough to acomidate many high fantasy rpg's.
So eq2 will live on after the release of Vanguard, as will Warcraft.
Vanguard and EQ2 are two totally different types of games. So I don't think it will be an EQ2 killer. Hell, EQ2 is geared towards totally differnt types of games. Most power gamers will tell you they won't play EQ2... Vanguard is going to be a much better, more refined version of EQ with differnt lore. You have some genious devs working on the game, they aren't goin gto release something that won't work. they know the competion they are up against. I think it will blow alot of games out of the water, but I also think there are new games in the making that might just pull alot of interest because they are so different. IMO eq2 will be a great title for casual players, and WoW will be the game to play til Vanguard, Dand D or even TR is released. All these games are catering to different kinds of players. EQ2 will survive just for being different.. and balanced. I won't play it, but I know there's tons of people that will.
Personal opinion is that SOE didn't know entirely what to do with EQ once they got complete control. I think EQ2 will kill itself because of that. EQ1 at least had the original insight and talent of Brad and some of his current crew. I consider myself a "casual" player. I might put in 50+ hours a week, but I don't want to spend everyhour at the xp grindstone. That doesn't mean I am not interested in Vanguard.
I'm trying to figure out what i'm going to do until its release, because there's nothing on the market, imo, that compares to Vanguard's dev team. I'll find something else to do before i touch an SOE creation. Twiddle my thumbs for two years, I'm sure that will provide multitudes of entertainment above and beyond EQ2.

A. EQII will be pushed out buggy! *the way SoE is* To compeat with WoW release.
B. WoW will be released around same time as EQII and even its beta is running smother then EQ'1.
C. Vangard is still 2 years off maybe 1 1/2. They havent even started to mention Beta where EQII and WoW have release dates next month.
D. By the time Vangard does come out EQII will be on its 2 Expantion and poss nurfing half thier clients toons.
E. A large wave of MMO games are coming that going to suck up alot of people. * Middle Earth Online, Matrix, WoW, Wish these are the stronger ones I have looked at and they all look to be good canidates to kill EQ2 or atleast Cripple it to the point Vangard will finish it off.*
I am actualy a EQ player *since Kunark* and will not go to EQII due to what I have seen SOE do in the past. I will be one of the first in line to log in Vangard when they do finaly come out! From all the info I have read and even the reviews they have been having. Just makes me want it more! I think the better question is Will EQII be strong enough to stay around for Vangard to kill it?

I completely agree. I am playing CoH now, but will switch to WoW, and may switch to Vanguard, or play both WoW and Vanguard. CoH is fun, but a completely different genre that I don't see holding my interest for more than 3-6 months. I can see playing WoW for a year.
Vanguard looks to be immersive, which I love in a game. I want a huge world that takes a ton of time to explore. I don't want quick and easy. I don't want cutesy graphics.
I may play EQ2, it depends. It certainly looks interesting. Vanguard, on the other hand, looks fascinating.
My only complaint is I AM TIRED OF WAITING!!!!!!!!!!!!
Developers really need to take a closer look at sci-fi as opposed to continuelly cannibilizing fantasy. With sci-fi back drops you can add kool things like ships and laser guns e.t.c but some crappy fantasy setting you are stuck with mid-evil sh it.
As for topic at hand .... I dont think any game would crush eq2 but thats not say that eq2 would ever grow to be as big as Eqlive was at its prime. The biggest problem i have with eq2 is that its like you are gettting bosseds. The are too many rules in the game such as limiting raid size or requiring a certain amount of players to be able to get into an instanced zone. Labeling mobs as solo and group (complete BS). Lack most of all lack of pvp (I rarely pvp but its nice to know that i have the option to duel with friends when bored).

Wow...50 hours a week and you are casual? Jeez...I wonder what that would make me. I might get in half that at best.
50 hours a week is a full WORK week with 10 hours of overtime! Wish I had that kinda time.
P.S. Oh, and Vanguard won't kill EQ2. If EQ2 is still running strong by the time Vanguard comes out, then it will have enough of a loyal player base to continue. If its gonna die, it will be long before Vanguard comes out.
