Hey There!
I was just wondering if anyone would know the cause of this, while playing Far Cry 2, or GRID for a while 30+ minutes usually, on the highest settings on 1680x1250 (or watever it is) my computer just turns off without a warning, I'm thinking it could be the temperatures of something and it just goes off, i dun got a PC Speaker, my graphics card is 8800GT Evga... 2gb ram, win xp, quad-core q6600, if anyone has any ideas i wud appreciate it... thanks D4rv3n!

Do you overclock? What motherboard do you have and power supply and it's specs. What type of memory also.
Need that info before I can give you some suggestions to try. Could be a setting in bios or hardware issue.

Sounds like an emergency shutdown due to high temperatures to me.
This is what I initialy thought but a stock q6600 will run well below the lowest auto shutdown threshhold for over temp which is 70c in the bios if he even has it turned on. So if he overclocks then it could be getting to hot.
This CPU will go up to 60c full load stock settings on stock cooling, however small OC have been pushing this CPU past 80c for some people. This is why I never bought this kentsfield quad and being 65nm it had more heat.
But your right it would be temp issue auto shuting down to protect if it reached the threshold but the OP needs to give more info about his temps and system setup to make a more informed opinion.

well yes you guys are right...
it is from overheating...
after turning it back on it said 107 deegres celcius on my cpu (only 1st and 2nd core in nvidia system monitor)
i don't overclock however i put my computer together myself, i got some average cooling on it ($25) but it shouldnt go that high.... maybe when i was putting it together the cpu paste thing wasnt put on properly? what could this be now?
It is the Q6600's inherant flaw. This is why I never bought one. So many of our overclocking community have seen this cpu get extremely hot upwards of 100c on full loads with small overclocking.
You may want to make sure your CPU fan is on max full time and not being auto adjusted. Go into the bios and disable it so it runs max. You could reseat the HSF on the CPU but that is some work. If your going to do it make sure to use a good thermal paste such as arctic silver 5 or better. Follow the instructions.
You want a good HSF for this CPU and I suggest a cooler that has heatpipes and a good fan, arctic cooling freezer 7 pro is a good cooler for low price of $20, all the benchmarks prove its cooling effectiveness over expensive ones.
Check your BIOS and turn off or raise the thermal threshold at which the CPU will shut down. You have yours set to 70c right now. Your temp of 107 I take it was from a windows measurement, the actual temp is more then 107 at full load.

Strange mine runs fine OCed to 3.1 ghz on all 4 cores. Idle stays around 30c Crysis in full detail maxed out I really do not see much rise 38c maybe 42c tops if the room is warm but never ever have I seen this go over.
Thanks for the heads up on this I will be sure to monitor it as dust collects in my case However I do clean the case out once a month to maintain my system.
Edit - I think I paid more for my cooling then anything this maybe why :P

Yeah it is strange, some will and some wont. I remember from many threads on the OC forums that there is a difference between steppings and batch dates. It seems the ones in a specific stepping and batch date have had abnormal temps. Could be poor processing of the silicon, but intel still has not said anything of it yet.

Your graphics card may be overheating as well, fit a system blower to help keep it cool.
This is true also. I had a faulty GTX280 that I had to return because the card was hitting 125c before comp would cut off. It is best to check with CPU and GPU temp reading software before you go about replacing or getting better cooling can save you money in the long run.
Also what is the Air Flow in your case like is there loads of room how many fans etc?
Ok i have said it often the q6600 is one of the coolest cpus i have ever owned (idle 30c max 49c (room temp 95ish F)). if it getting hot there are a few things to look at.
1 What is the v-core ? The Q6600 is between 0.85 – 1.5V. (i have mine at 1.22 which is so low i know if i take this to 1.35 i can boost this baby to 3.4-6 easy [but there is no need for that]). Now becuase you have it set on 1.5 does not mean anything. A program called cpu-z will tell you your REAL core voltage (its normally lower than you set it in the bios).
2 Maybe you put too much or too little thermal paste etc. betwen the heatsink and the cpu. (you need very little). (also there something called tuniq or something mx-2 i think best stuff out there but any artice silver is good also).
3 Maybe your cpu or heatsinks surface is curved very baddly (any true stright edge will point this out, ie place it on the bottum diagnally and hold it up to the light if you see a TON of light or through it you know you have a curve, PS ALL OF THEM COME CURVED A SLIGHT SLIVER OF LIGHT IS OK , NOT IDEAL BUT OK. You can lap the surface if you wish to change this).
4 maybe your heatsink sucks $ means nothing - http://www.frostytech.com/top5heatsinks.cfm
The xigamatec rules. Cheap around $20-25
5 No air flow in case (take side off put a fan on it )
6 You have a bad cpu or sensor, in this case you take it up with intel.
If ya have an questiosn reply to this post and ill try to help.
The taking out the battery is what i have always done then i take a piece of metal and touch it to all the junk the bttery would touch clears it safely everytime. (I Do not do this anymore as my systems normally have a safe oc mode, but sometime i clear peoples bios passwords this way .)

Well I opened up my case and found tons of dust on my cooler, i havent cleaned it since I got it and that was the issue... now it runs at around 45 - 60 deegrees celcius which is still pretty high but ohh well... my graphics card Evga 8800GT superclocked stays at around 70+ and up to 90 at full load at all times, but i guess dats how the card is since everyones coplaining about it.. but ohh well thanks for help guys...
D4rv3n!
They have programs like rivatuner that can adjust your fan speed on your gpu. I did this with my 4870 before ati released a fix just because I didn't like it constantly running around 80c. See if you can bump it up a little without it getting to hot. Good luck.
