Is there really no completely free mmorpg?

I'm just curious, I mean you can many mmorpgs but in the end or when the beta testing ends you are going to have to pay for it, So i'm asking myself, is there really no completely free mmorpg? that will never ask you to pay anything?

Thanks for the help (Again ;))

Guild Wars..but it isn't out yet.

I had the impression that Guild Wars wasn't free. I mean, there's no subscription, but I thought that you'd have to go out and buy a CD of it. So... it's just one-time cost?

p.s. by the way, Rubies of Eventide wasn't free a while back, but it is now. The thing is, it's not really worth it in its current state. www.cyberwar.com

Guild Wars will require purchase of the initial box.  If future content after release is something you want, expansion packs will also have to be purchased.   Not completely free but no monthly subscription fee.

Rubies of eveningtide is free... free to download..free to play ...it's not the best, but it's not the worsed either. I'd pay the $40 and get GuildWars :). But feel free to look Rubies up.

I played maplestory before, i really liked it, but just like the others, it's just in beta stages right now, when i found out about it, i deleted it, cause i will not be able to pay after it, so it's pointless for me to play it now. thanks anyway ;p

Depends on what you are looking for. There are a couple of space sims and some 2D stuff, and some games where you play to a certain level for free then pay for any further advancement. There are also a few where you play for free but pay for items, cash, etc, ie you need to pay to stay competitive. But in general if you want complete development and ongoing content you are going to pay for it one way or another, Guild Wars included.

Guild wars is free after the initial cost of buying the CD.

    there is no monthly fee.

    <sigh>

I'm not having this argument again here. Look up the GW threads. If you want ongoing content, new items, and new areas in GW, you WILL pay for it.

Conquer Online, its completely free (you can buy dragon balls though, to increase skills (I think...)) and its decent fun. The download for the game and the updates is really slow though.

There is Runescape but it costs money if u want to be member($5 per month).
  •  1. Runescape is the most famous completly free MMORPG.

They have over the past 6 months doubled the game world. The new parts require one to pay to play. But the "old world" is still 100% free to play. And has enough content to easily last a casual gamer 6 months to 1 year.

     2. There is also Strive For Power which is a 100% completly free MMORPG. It might be the only MMORPG that allows players to create an entire party/group of players instead of having to play 1 character per account. It has perma-death so you have to play smart heheh. Though it's rare your entire group will all die at the same time.

If you cannot afford to play major MMORPGs, I suggest you stick with school, going after a good job. Those should come first. Computer games are are luxary (sp!). Keep priorities straight. Later on when you get a nice job, come back and play the major MMORPGs.

    1)-Rubies of Eventide.

    6 races.

    25+Classes.

    Decent Graphics, relate to EQ1.

No PvP yet (It's a new game, give it time).

The game is ran on freeware and uses its donations to upgrade, im sure this game will be awesome in it's future stages, I already enjoy it now and it can only get better.

The only thing you PAY is optional, it's a 50$ Account upgrade for 3 rare items, and extra upgraded account zone and 2 extra character slots. Not that much for 50 bucks, so enjoy yourself and play free.

You question is "Are there any free MMORPGs?"

The answer is Yes there are. Rubies of Eventide, Shattered Galaxy, 2nd life is CHEAP 9.95 for a lifetime account, There's a few others...Do a search.

If you asked the question "Are there any GOOD free MMORPGs?"

The answer to that question is No. It takes 10's of millions of dollars these days to make a good MMORPG...You don't get that for free.

    That's your opinion.

I think all a good mmorpg takes is a creative mind.

    free or charge.

The problem is that servers, bandwidth and development time costs money. Even if the developers work for no money whatsoever, they've still got to cover the cost of running servers, including bandwidth, upgrades and backups.

MMORPGs are also probably the most complex gametype to develop. You've got to strike a balance between graphics, network data and security. Even with the average modern FPS you've only got to cope with a maximum of about 32 players. Even with a small MMORPG you've got to cope with hundreds or simultaneous players. You've also got to come up with continuous storylines and events.

Many UO servers often have a hard time breaking even, even with donations, and they generally only have to cope with a peak of a couple of hundred simultaneous players and a single modest server.

My guess is that even the open source products like Planeshift will be pay-to-play if/when it's released.

But then, why is everyone so against paying to play a good game? Do you not think that all the developers hard work was worth a few measly $'s?

Roma Victor is going to try to make the game free.  I think you might have to pay to download though.  I guess we'll have to wait and see how it turns out for them.  Personally I don't mind paying a few $'s a month to play.
