It has not been announced as of yet but taking into consideration most if not all player's use an open beta to test the game is there a need for an open beta?

When the game does release you can download it for free and play in the free zone(maybe to level 10) and you dont have to pay a sub until you know you like the game and want to move out of the free zone, sounds pretty much like an open beta but it is the game client you will be playing on.

I am not saying they wont announce an open beta but just pointing out you wont be losing anything anyway, well except getting into the game a bit earlier .

If someone had came up to me in 1980 when I was on my Atari 2600 and said we will be playing games with thousands of people at the same time.I guess my response would have been,"but I only have 2 joysticks"

Don't they use open beta to test the servers out? If everyone plays the "free" zone and the servers randomly crash then they won't get many people paying for it will they?

    MMOs that I'm waiting for:
    WAR
    Aion
    SGW
    TCoS
    Darkfall
    STO

That would depend, they can test the server's out with beta tester's also, they could just make posts asking the testers to come on at a certain time to try and crash them, you dont need 50k of ppl to do that.

Like I said they may very well announce the open beta just before launch I dont really know,I was simply pointing out it is not like you have to buy the game without having tried it 1st.

My guess would be if there was an open beta it would not be everyone that could join,I would say a set amount more than likely made up of members of the official forums being invited into it,again just a guess.

I think free zones are a bad idea, a free open beta with a full content acessible game would be better.  With a free zone you can make it look great since you are working with a severely limited amount of content and area, sound familiar, and when people get into the open world it could be totally different.

Not saying that this game is doing that or that it will be, just the fact that a limited little area to evaluate a game of this size is insufficient.  An open beta that lasted a week or so would give people enough time to start getting into the meat of the game and see if they like it.

Maybe after release a free zone can be implemented, but I think if you really want to grab all of the early adopters you'll need to show them that the game is as good throughout.  Not just in the starter zone.

I don't think it's too much of a problem. Most games glorify the newbie zones and the "end game", and in between is a grind. This is with or without a free zone. I think it's healthy for a MMO to allow people to try their game free. Get rid of all the "Hand us the money first" slimey mentality.

I do think it can hurt though in one respect, and that's that the free zone doesn't do the game any justice. Not sure if this is the case with Spellborn, but I've tried Vanguard three times since it's conception. Once when it release, and my friends couldn't run it, so I didn't play. Once about a year later, and I got to level 10 in about 2 days and just explored and had a great time and almost bought the game. Once more recently with the trial island, and I didn't even play out the whole trial. The fun of Vanguard was the huge world, exploring, and you can't do that in a free zone.

But, hopefully Spellborn has enough new gameplay ideas that they can sell the game in a free zone alone. Overall I think it's a great idea.

How can you say it isn't too much of a problem and then re-iterate my point of starter zones not giving you as good of at the game as a whole?  From what you said, that is the reason you did not go with Vanguard on the 3rd attempt; I would consider that a big problem of a starter area.

Because I would've never even tried Vanguard without a trial. 0% chance of me being their customer without it. Had Vanguard been a better game for me, thanks to their trial, I would've purchased it. It's not a very popular game because it's not a very good game.

I agreed that a free zone -can- be a problem, but I think the good outweighs the bad. And it can be a great boon to the game. For me, all vanguard really had going for it was an amazing world. The gameplay wasn't fun though, and my friends didn't like it. If Chronicles of Spellborn is a better game, then when we try their free zone, they might land a couple customers.

You can agree and disagree with someone at the same time. It's called a grey area. I think a free zone is better than paying for the game without trying it, but I don't think it's as good as a simple 10 day, unlimited access trial.

Honestly, nobody really knows for sure how the "F2P area" is going to work yet.  The release date I last saw was like the 27th of November, so open beta probably isn't a major issue.  The good news is that without an open beta, when you do try the game for free, if you decided to stay you don't lose your character.  In the end though, I am not positive how well the subscription model is going to work in today's mmorpg market.  It is different, maybe it will work well.

No Open Beta for this game. The release is  in 11 days and then you can try it for free (starter area's)

This prolly a better idea anyway. Open betas are little more than free trials...most ppl just want to get into the beta to play for free. Then ppl complain cause the 'beta' is not a perfect running game.

While that's true, it does leave the door open for the servers being overwhelmed on release day, as happens with a good many games.  Sure, some games get their open beta and still get rocked on day 1, but without the large influx of players for an OB...well, I hope it turns out alright.
