I tried EVE about a year ago because I was interested in the game and its unusual style. Unfortunately, the games steep learning curve got to me and after the trail period expired, I simply just didn't sub.
Since then I've been holding out hopes for games like WAR, AoC, Vangaurd, etc etc... only to feel after awhile that the games just were not for me. I hopped onto EVE this past weekend BUT before doing so I took the time to read through this excellent guide created by the community...

This was a tremendous help, and I'm now really enjoying myself in game!
Anyway, now that I'm starting, I was wondering what kind of advice more experianced players had for us new guys?
My char is a Gallente primarily focused on Intel/Mem and specced to special forces... My primary interests are in merc work and pvping, but I am also interested in exploring aspects of the game such as player owned structures, mining, and mission running...
Learning all these concepts and ways to play the game is pretty overwhelming.
Does anyone have some good advice on how best to start out exploring these options? Other than 'join a good corp.' I'm trying to get a good sense of where I should start focusing and appreciate any advice!

Best advice is to join a corp player run besides that always keep your ships insured and your skill points. Never take ore that you did not mine or open a can that is not yours, Always moniter local channels and take a relitively safe route to distanation. Scan ships killed in last hour and pods killed in last hour.
Do this and you shoud be ok till you get a suicide player or alt gets after you.

Read the stickies on the newbie forum and keep actively following the discussiosn there as well, it'll help a lot. Join a decent corp that's ACTIVE and able to help new players (not everyone is able to explain/teach) like EVE-UNI. Keep reading, asking, learning and planning before doing.
My honest advice to you is you are interested in PVP is to join a player corp that will tech its newer members and doesnt live on the high horse of "need xyz SP to pvp properly" and dont buy into the carebears who say you cant pvp till you have played for 2 years... A frigate + warp scrambler is all you need to be of assitance in a PVP situation and dont let anyone tell you anything else, you may not be as effective in direct dps/tank ability but you are helping the team, POS's will be a bit out there to try to be honest as the only way to work on these is to have access to the whole corperations towers, this is a serious security concern so this is usually left to trusted members (in eve trust is rarely given due to the harsh nature) as for mining and mission running thats dooable from the starter corps.
but the key in all this will be to find a corp that will help and train the newer players.
joining a good corp is a very useful bit of advice, but beyond that, if you want to learn some PvP join red verses blue, or faction warfare. you'll need to do some missions to get into FW.
earn a little cash, then buy a ship and board it and say outloud to yourself as you do "this ship is gone, if i dock this ship again, that is an unexpected bonus" then go to losec
For a player interested in developing PvP skills I would temper the above advice by saying, choose carefully whose ore you steal, whose can you flip, or whose loot you steal. These acts of thievery can lead to some 1v1 PvP engagements that can be quite constructive.
As far as corporations, hisec pirate corps are a good place to learn a lot about PvP, hisec aggression mechanics, and how to PvP solo and in small gangs without risk to sec status.
Best advice I got for anyone starting out in EVE and want to PvP is; be all that you can be with an interceptor first! Forget about Assault frigs, Cruisers, Heavy Assault Cruisers, recons, Battleships or even Battlecruisers. Learn to be really useful with an interceptor, and how to maximize your contribution to your corp.
My corp use ceptors on a wide scale. They're cheap, they're hard to hit, they're great tacklers and they can easily be fitted for +200dps. For fun factor there's nothing like crashing a mining party with a roaming gang of ceptors.
The new Certificate system is amazing for new players. It really helps will choosing right skills, etc.

I will just add to this that this problem too can be lessened to a degree first of all when moving your stuff from one location to another [for example if the corp you are joining lives far away] DO NOT put everything into one load otherwise if you do get ganked by a suicider or palyer alt you will at least not lose everything.
Also when transporting stuff use a fast ship such as a frigate for the more valuable stuff and fit a something module wise to make you harder to kill because Suicide and alt gankers usually have a limited time frame to kill you before Police arrive so anything you can do to make it ahrder to kill yourself is a good thing.
So to summarise.
- Dont carry all your stuff in one go.
- Make yourself ahrder to kill.
- Use a fast ship and above point to transport valuable stuff.
Another great example of Moore's Law. Give people access to that much space (developers and users alike) and they'll find uses for it that you can never imagine. "640K ought to be enough for anybody" - Bill Gates 1981
Wow, thanks for all the replies. My char is currently highly spec'd to use drones, what's been everyones experiance using them in combat? Are they typically only useful in large numbers? Any tips there?
Drones are okay but you will need gun skills or missile skills to supplement them and add to your damage. In missions you have to know how NPC rat aggro works and which missions have NPC rats who instant aggro your drones, or trigger new waves of rats, and how to kill those rats without losing your drones. For PvP you need to know when to deploy drones and which drones to deploy. IMHO guns and missiles are better alternatives then to go strictly drones all the way. A combination of both are always good though.
Games I've played/tried out:WAR, LOTRO, Tabula Rasa, AoC, EQ1, EQ2, WoW, Vangaurd, FFXI, D&DO, Lineage 2, Saga Of Ryzom, EvE Online, DAoC, Guild Wars,Star Wars Galaxies, Hell Gate London, Auto Assault, Grando Espada ( AKA SoTNW ), Archlord, CoV/H, Star Trek Online, APB, Champions Online, FFXIV, Rift Online, GW2.
Game(s) I Am Currently Playing:
GW2 (+LoL and BF3)
Drone boats (such as the Vexor cruiser, Dominix battleship, Ishkur HAC, Myrmidon BC, and Ishtar AF) do the majority of their DPS with drones, with the guns being a supplemental weapon system. This is why in pvp you see things like Vexors with small guns and domis with only neuts fitted - they're just not that important when the PG/CPU can be used for something else. On mission ships generally the guns are mostly to get aggro, then you drop your drones, drones kill stuff while it shoots at you and you tank the damage.
As far as damage goes, drones are, overall, the lowest damage weapons in their size class when you add in factors such as ship bonuses and skills and all that other stuff. Plus they can be individually targeted and destroyed, which can be crippling if you don't have spares or run.
Their great strength however is that they operate independantly of your ship, and thus work roughly equally well against any target in your control range, giving drone ships even greater range versatilty than long-rangen missile boats, and unlike missile boats which have to fit BCUs (and now target painters and webs and such), a drone ship can devote exactly zero slots to DPS and be fine, thus allowing it to focus on tank, speed, and e-war.
Mostly you see people using Gallente drones, because they do the most damage (generally used in PvE), or Minmatar drones, because they're the fastest - thus gunners have a hard time shooting them and they can keep up with fast ships. These are generally used in pvp.
Droneboats in PVP, while not soing uber DPS, can be quite nasty to deal with. Apart from that; the recent changes made it so bigger ships have trouble hitting smaller ones, this was already the case a bit but they changed it a bit more. This means that 5 midslot droneboats all of a sudden have become the overall best solution since it CAN deal with small ships (just launch small drones).
In big fleet fights they're not so useful, so small gang/solo work, that's what they're best at. That and missions ofcourse.
Drones are okay but you will need gun skills or missile skills to supplement them and add to your damage. In missions you have to know how NPC rat aggro works and which missions have NPC rats who instant aggro your drones, or trigger new waves of rats, and how to kill those rats without losing your drones. A combination of both are always good though.
I agree. Don't put all your eggs in one basket. Make sure you have decent gunnery and/or missile skills to go along with your drone skills. If your drones are killed and you have no other combat skills built up, you're pretty much toast.
