With only a week left before Moria launches I think I have finally settled to make a Warden character first.
I have played a bit in the beta but didnt really have enough time to get into either but I'm fairly confident I will like the warden better.
The big choice though is which race to choose... race is a funny thing in Lotro, the benefits of one race over another are very minimal yet once you choose a race you can not switch of course so you are stuck with that choice for the rest of your characters life.
Every race gets one major skill and a few minor ones
Minor Benefits:
Hobbits and Elves get an out of combat stealth. This is useful for wardens because they have a javalin attack that is upgraded when used from stealth.
Although the primary weapon of a warden is the spear the warden also gets special benefits to using a sword or a club. Both men and elves get an additional bonus when using swords and hobbits get an additional bonus for using clubs.
Spears do the most damage of the three, swords have a bonus to hit more accurately, and clubs will apply a debuff that causes enemies to attack slower and thus deal slightly less damage.
Man get a passive +1%block/+1%parry/+1%evade but elves and hobbits do not get any passive avoidance skills.
Man also have very slightly better base stats, hobbits are somewhere in the middle, and elves are the worst, but only by a very small amount.
Hobbits get +1% shadow mitigation and +1% fear resistance, Elves get +1% disease and +1% poison resistance. Men do not get any passive mitigation skills.
Major Benefits:
Hobbits get a feign-death like skill which causes them to drop all aggro while they pretend to be dead. If you are solo at the time it will cause the monster to reset, if you are in a group the monster will go attack someone else instead.
Man get a big heal 2200 - 3000 points of moral.
Elves get a 10 second parry bonus of 75%
For the Warden class I would say the Elf abilitys are nearly tied for usefullness with the Man ability, but the Man ability is slightly better.
Wardens health does go down rather quickly, they need consistant healing in order to stay alive and useful, it is very possible to loose 3000 moral in 10 seconds especially if you get hit with a heavy crit and have a couple mobs on your back. with the Elf parry ability you will basically take zero damage for 10 seconds as long as the monsters are in your frontal arc, you will still take damage though from monsters at your sides or behind you.
For PvMP I would say the man heal is the best, often in PvMP you get zerged by lots of players coming at you from all sides, they know you are more vulnerable from behind so of course skilled players will try to stay there.
Also, in PvMP if they see that you hit your elven parry ability, they just need to stop attacking for a few seconds and wait till its over then finish you off, but with the man ability you get a large heal so they need to keep pounding on you if they want to take you down, its almost like starting the fight over again.
The hobbit ability is not that usefull in PvMP because when you are pretending to be dead you can not move, so once you stand up you are right back where you started, which was probably in a bad situation.
I hope that this helps someone, to be honest I'm still not sure which I'll choose because i dont know if I will be taking this character into the Moors or not, and I already have to many characters of the race of Man.
The real question is what type of character do you want? An Ettenmoors PvMP'er? A PvE Tank? A solo'ist who looks out for himself? Once you answer that then it becomes easier to choose a race.
Good luck and happy hunting!

Ive decided to roll a warden too. What race is still open. But it will prolly be a man becouse of the heal trait.
Hauken Stormchaser
I want pre-CU back
Station.com : We got your game
Yeah?, Well i want it back!!!
One of my mains is a man , the other a elf. I prefer men because of the Return to Bree skill. Elved get return to Rivendell which may become more usefull after MoM. I also have one low level hobbit and do not care for the running animation of hobbits.
I miss DAoC
As far as racial traits as return to Bree or Rivendell, they wont really factor into my decision, once your character has progressed, at least for Man and Elf there are much better racials. Im currently leaning towards an Elf for Sylvan shadows, parry and increased agility, but man heal is such a usefull tool, both PvE and PvMP. With that said I may very well roll an elf, I've made and deleted several characters (all men) and I'm pretty sick of the Archet/Combe/Staddle starting area.
I think mine will be man mainly as i pretty much know there starting area like the back of my hand so it will make for easier lvling and such, but i am also fond of the Elf....mmm now you have me thinking, decisions decisions.
You probably know this, but you can always take a non-human character from Erid Luin (or the shire) into Combe if that is where you prefer to level.
I did this with man character except in reverse, I left Combe and took him over to Thorins Hall because I know that area really well and it saves time.

I go with man for all my chars. Nothing beats the extra full heal you get. The other races class traits are good, but a full heal and return to bree..cant beat it.
See you in the dream..

I know dude, there little legs are moving so fast, freaks me out. So funny at certain times.

ya i think ill pick a man bc of the heal that they get and i dont have a man in this game yet.
Elf, so I can party immediately with my wife's new elven RK
I'll be creating a Man Warden. I just like the feel of them over the Hobbit or Elf for the class. They also seem like the race that would have a general militia, which is what I see the Warden as, the farm boy who joined the general militia to protect his home.
Warden sounds great, i've got that far vs. the RK. I'm leaning towards Man also for the man heal which is good and the starting quest area.
