How far can a duo go?

I was considering playing FFXI with my wife. She uses a Mac so we are really limited on what we can play together (totally burnt out on WoW after a couple of months of that crap).
I've got an Xbox 360, so I was going to pick up a Xbox and PC copy so we could play together.
I've heard that FFXI is not really solo friendly and that most content takes a group... so my question is... if we play mostly as a duo, will we be able to get far? Or will we come to rely on finding a full group?

You can duo all the way to end game if you wanted.
I know a lot of husband/wife, boyfriend/girlfriend, butch/bitch combos in the game that all they do is party with each other. If one person wants to pick a tanking job and the other person wants to pick a healing job and you want to build your own parties you would have absolutly no trouble getting people. The hardest roles to fill are tank, healer, refresher in this game ... DD is everywhere so it isn't a problem. You might hit a snag on some days, but if you are doing the healer/tank combo you can easily go out with just the two of you and hack at things until the right things pop lfp.
I recommend finding peopel who you can play this game with that you know in real life. It make the game so much better and going at FFXI alone is very very hard.
My wife and I duo a lot of stuff. You can duo exp if you want. But as Icon said, if you make yourselves the key jobs for a party, you won't have any issues with parties. What the wife and I did was one played a less than desirable job and the other played a highly sought after job. They would have to take us both for exp, so that was a good way to level jobs we liked without getting passed up for parties.
Anyway, yeah, you can duo a bunch of stuff. It'll help hone your skills as well when you only have each other to rely on.

Duo and small party is very doable in FFXI. Other combos besides the tank/healer are playing versatile classes like Red and Blue mage. Two Red mages have enough weapons at thier disposal to duo well. Also Beastmaster plus another pet class (Puppetmaster, Dragoon, Summner) or Red/Blue mages make for great duo and small party setups. Duo Beastmasters can access a lot of the game that other duos might not.
I've found the FFXI community is a pretty friendly one and if you ened help there are usually nice players around to lend a hand.
