Mortal Online!

Mortal in a next-gen MMoRPG in development by a swedish company named StarVault.

It's a sandbox full pvp game close to what is promised with darkfall, but in my opinion it looks much better and i like some of MOs features that darkfall lack.

I guess as MO doesnt have a forum here alot of you have never heard about it, so i will do some copy paste of the features they have talked about so far.

History doesn't repeat itself - Is your goal to face a legendary monster? Well, that is usually suicide – if you can find one. But if your guild would actually manage to kill one, it’s dead. Gone. Rare monsters and quests do not resurrect or come again, whether it’s an ancient beast, a crumbling temple, an island rising out of the sea or a great ritual that fails or succeeds.

You might get away with an item never seen before, or the unique scar that tells about the experience. There are not many of these opportunities but they are usually important enough to affect the whole world and its history. All you have to do is be at the right place at the right time.

Real skill, Real-time combat - We want you and your character to be one. Your skills as a player combined with the skills of your character will determine the outcome of any PvP or PvE fight.

In the first person perspective of Mortal Online you virtually perform every action your character does – there is no such thing as automatic combat or your character doing the job for you. Aim and strike anywhere you want, and experience your characters combat skill increase as well as your own.

Live the free world - In Mortal Online we want you to be free. We create a world for you with a minimum of rules but with endless possibilities, meaning you decide the path and goals of your progress, and where your actions are reflected back upon the world. As you decide the fate of your characters during their lifetime, responsibilities and consequences arise with many different options to choose from:

Do you want to walk the dangerous path of thieves and assassins? Or would you choose the path of the honorable, using law and strength to prevent the murderers from ruling the world?

Choose to be a lone wolf or hermit by finding a secluded place to build your house for storage or studies. Or form a guild with others that desire a keep and eventually a fortress.

Steal from or slay whoever you want and loot their items, but prepare for the aftermath and watch out for the long arm of the law.

Devote your life to a crafting profession and become famous for your reliable quality goods. Discover new formulas and recipes and explore the lands to find unique tools and resources.

Choose to believe in one of the Gods and watch its power grow. Fight heretics and burn their temples to rob their Gods of power. Or start a new cult: with enough believers your God might be powerful enough to enter the Pantheon.

Explore the world to discover new places and name them. Venture into ancient caves and temples to find the buried history of the world, including its forgotten knowledge, spells and items. New resources are to be found everywhere in flora, fauna and minerals.

Mortal has one video, which has been around for quite a while, and one screenshot.

It's supposed to release in "Summer 2009". So, I'd say give it until August 31, 2009, and after that it's another Darkfall.

Yeah except MO devs have not missed a single deadline they have given us yet. Not a single one. Darkfall on the other hand, you're blind, retarded or a rabid fanboi if you deny that they haven't missed a day.

And yes, this is being made by a small team, just like DF. They are also (realistically) promising about half of the features and have one of the best engines available right now, Unreal 3. Unreal 3 > Aventurines piece of trash engine. Having licensed a well-established engine also greatly decreases the development time of a game, especially an MMORPG.

Anyways I'm done with this thread, because just like every other MO thread, it's going to turn into DF vs MO, and um, yeah, nobody cares.

Highly doubt it's going to release next summer, since (like the previous poster said) so far it has one movie and one screenshot. If the developers are promising just about everything that Darkfall has, and probably more, you'd expect at least a good fan community and info by this time around to match that release date.

Uh, Vanguard used the Unreal Engine, and had a lot of problems using it for an MMORPG.

They will probably not release this summer no, but atleast it probably wont take 8 years..

Anyway the people at StarVault are surely are a more compitent and reliable bunch than those at adventurine, atleast that's what my opinion is after reading their report etc..

Here is an interview from swedish television if you haven't seen it yet http://playrapport.se/video/1308943#/video/1308943

They stated Summer of 2009, so taht's all they get. If they don't release in Summer of 2009, then I'm calling them a Darkfall.

Thanks for the link to that report, although I have no clue what they are saying. At least it shows that the game is a work in progress. Although I'm still not sure where they got the funding for the project.

No no, you should only call them a Darkfall if they claim to be releasing in 2009, fail to meet that objective, and then claim again they will be releasing in 2012, but again look like they are going to miss it.

Tried: LotR, CoH, AoC, WAR, Jumpgate Classic
    Played: SWG, Guild Wars, WoW
    Playing: Eve Online, Counter-strike
    Loved: Star Wars Galaxies
Waiting for: Earthrise, Guild Wars 2, anything sandbox.

And Priston Tale II uses the Unreal 3 engine and it works great. So, point being?

This isn't Vanguard or CrappyAsianGrinder9284, this is Mortal Online.

And please tell me what that has to do with the Unreal engine working or not?

Is Quad Software working on it too? I see a logo  linked back to the site from Mortal site..it's using one of their softwares.  That was actually one of the companies that worked on that Mourning MMORPG... looks like they moved on from it pretty good...

  • sandboxysandboxy Member Posts: 153

Once they produce an actual gameplay video, I might actually start getting interested.

And I will e-kick anyone who claims that cinematic cartoon movie as a gameplay vid.

So you think a company with these reviews from Ubisoft and Eidos and SAAB is a scam company?

Vanguard is using unreal Engine 2.5, which is shite and not MMO friendly because it was made for FPS's. Unreal 3 engine was built up from scratch as a versitle engine to be used in different game types.

First of all i have a very close eye on this one as it looks quite promising.

And everybody who cries DARKFALL LUL...i highly recommend to watch the interview posted on page one of this thread.

    or simply here -> playrapport.se/video/1308943#/video/1308943

Yes its in swedish BUT you get a nice view into their office, their work and there are a few seconds of actual ingame footage. Which is much more information then you get from "other" companies in such a short development time.

It is also important to mention that this is a first person mmorpg in a sandbox world! This might turn of some people but there are tons of waiting for one. There is also a lot of good and direct communication on their boards with the devs, every gamer should at least take a look at this one.

  • bcrankshawbcrankshaw Member Posts: 547

I've been following MO for about 5 months now .It looks really promising. The Dev's are ex UO players and programmers .Also they are active on there forums and actually respond quite consistently to questions.

This is one game I really suggest people watch :)

My main issue with this game is that they are not creating their own engine for it, normally games don't turn out too well when devs do this in my experience.

  • Thoric485Thoric485 Member UncommonPosts: 525

I don't have enough fanboism to spend on both this and Darkfall. Maybe a few in-game screenshots and a in-game video would get my attention but for now they haven't shown anything worthwhile.

I hadn't really thought about it, but so far that's true. What MMORPG s have turned out well that used and existing engine?

But then again, existing engines that can be licensed haven't been around for that long, and I don't know that much about Unreal 3 vs. 2.5.

Usually it's the network code that causes the problems.
