Character wipe response from a GM (CB Screenshot)

Some guy posted that screenee on IRC. Yea, it has been censored with photoshop and all but I doubt someone would photoshop a screenie just to scare people out. But It's still possible.. ohwell.. take it like you want. Anyway I belive most of people here aren't in CB and are not concerned about that so much.. :)

**EDIT**
Sorry the link was taken down like 1min after.. and can't find the screenshot in my tempfile to rehost it :(, but what we could see on the screenshot, was a GM whisperin to a player like "Open beta is coming soon and there will be a character wipe"

**RE-EDIT** (thanks Jimhus)

It doesnt suprise me. If Blizzard is smart they would keep do a wipe before open beta and then keep open beta characters into retail. Why? Because the first two weeks the beginner zones will be packed. I mean worse then stress test. Now if people get to start a little earlier it would get rid of some of the crowds in the newbie zones and allow people to enjoy the game more. Im just hoping thats what they will end up doing, otherwise Im gonna wait to play until 2am everyday to get a break from the crowds ::::19::

    Whats wrong with a wipe?

You dont beta to get a headstart, you beta to help make the game better. At luanch everyone should start over.

Open Beta is no longer considered a beta.. Companies use open beta as a way to advertise their game and show people what's it like. They only way companies will try to squeeze OB as a way to test the game is by saying they are stress testing their servers but most companies just do mass closed beta invites.

Wipe CB and wipe OB. Its what blizzard will do and it is the right thing to do.

    LlamaScat - PS - Emerald
Zimok - WoW - PvP Server
    Zimok - SWG - Bloodfin

The only game I can think of that didn't wipe was Lineage 2, correct me if I'm wrong I didn't bother playing after beta thankfully. To let people, especially in a game with pvp, have a head start has got to be the stupidest idea since... well I don't know. But it's still a bad idea.

Considering over 100,000 participants signed up for the stress test beta - just imagine what open beta will be like with no limit on sign-ups?

Imagine if Blizzard kept that entire database of characters after retail. A large portion (when you consider kids that wont get parents permission, freeloaders, etc) may not even decide to purchase the game afterwards. I've seen several posts from current beta palyers stating they werent going to continue playing when it came time to pay. Why fill up your database with stats on non-paying players? Just a thought...

I thought thats why the companies usually offer the first month free.

    Character wipes should happen.

That said, I've heard all kinds of stories and although I can't see Blizz retaining characters from OB to retail, I'd say there's a chance they'll let the CB testers keep their characters through OB so the devs can keep working on higher level content.

Also, it does not seem professional for a GM to use the expression ":(" . At least in Lineage ][ it didn't. Howvever GMs spoke Engrish in L2 so there goes that theory.

City of Heroes also let preorders start the game before others and one more thing. How is keeping character from open beta a head start in a sense? Everyone starts at the same time, when OB starts. Anyone whos interetested in WoW will , for the most part, participate in it. I know, I know, what about the people in stores who never heard of the game. Well if they seem interested in the game and buy it but when they log in the servers and see its over crowded and cant accomplish anything, dont you think its going to turn them away? It benefits them also by allowing them to enjoy the game more. Just my thoughts

Of course they wipe, its a beta. What people that just want to play for free think about that is completly unimportant... They do not ever matter to anyone anywhere.

I think the phrase you are looking for coldmeat is.

Oh Boo-hoo! You guys got to experiance World of Warcraft for 1+ months. The only time I got to play World of Warcraft was on Stress Test. And that was only for one week! My character got wiped, now its your turn. Also, Open Beta will only last 1- month. That means if I get into it, I wont have much time to experience World of Warcraft. Be glad that you got to play World of Warcraft for free cuz starting Nov. 15 you will have to pay to play ::::31::

If you look at the text box closely you will see that there is text above it he just spray painted it out like the characters, not saying that it isnt a hoax or anything just that there is conversation before the GM comment image

I've spoken to GMs in game. They do not volunteer information about anything, much less about sensitive things like character wipes. I'll leave it at that.

I agree.  Open Beta is now a sort of free trial of the game before it goes to release.  With so many mmmorpgs coming out, completing with eachother AND the games already going, they are putting their game out there for an "Open Beta" trial and letting the players get a feel for the game.

Thhis applies to a small numbers of players.  Obviously most players know they want to buy WoW and play it, but some people, like me, are fans of Everquest and plan on playing Everquest II.  By putting up and Open Beta of WoW, it allows people like me to try it, and maybe even change my mind about which game I want to play . . .
