Hi folks
After going through several free MMOs and a few years of Anarchy Online a few months in CoX I'm still or again looking for the right game for me.
Mostly I'm the old fashoined type of guy who really remembers playing interactive fiction, Ultima IV Phantasy I when it all came out. Also coming from pen & paper RPGs. Thus I seek a game that offers me a world to play in, to explore and roleplay every now and then and also players who enjoy such things. I remember RPGers were smiled upon and RPG features thought useless stuff on the DNW AO server, exploration wasn't any objective, since mostly old timers were online who just sought after the most efficient way to level. Only few players were willing just to run across a playfield to see what things are out there. What I liked about AO was the vast world and the atmosphere out there. Huge playfield, checking for details left behind, seeing mobs I never saw before, but the community was all about gear, which point to put where and how to maximize efficiency.
So that's what I don't like in games: Minmaxing! People turning games into siences and sports always competing to be the best and if you don't exactly fit in and to everything their way you're out in the cold. I want to explore, play a game and have fun, not constantly being called a gimp because I don't go mainstream, or being frowned upt because I like to look around not rush through missions till I'm dizzy. Geez I can be stressed out at work, have to deal with numbers there, so I want to relax in games and have fun, being caught by the atmosphere and world there is, being part of it. AO went static. You had to obey the rules by the oldtimers, or you had no chance. I don't like the oldies make the rules, I don't like having to grind through some content joining bots collecting some strrange points and everything is set up so those who are there longer than you have all advantages. I want a dynamic world not one whose community outlived itself and doesn't let youngsters in unless they become as static as them. There are enough politics IRL, so no need for them in spare time.
That was what I liked about the few teams I had in CoX. It was all about fun and action. Come together run into the mission and party on. all ran in and it was about fun, in downtimes we changed some words and noone rushed. But unfortunatly the german CoX server is quite empty, so playing all solo and noone talks is no way to play an MMO for me. Great world, but all so empty with nothing but NPC passer-bys.
PvP: Three words: I don't care! I don't like enforced PvP. Having to grind battlestations in AO was nothing fo rme. Even more my experience with PvPers so far was they are the minmaxers and players turning games from fun to sience, taking all into serious buisness and sports. The more a games was geard to a mature audience and PvP the more immature the community was. Nope, not every PvPer is like that. My best PvP time I had on the hardcore PvP sever in Sacred 1 (opposed to the normal sever, wheere the kids hung out), when people actually gave hints to you and tried to help you, not laughing. The moment I got PKed in 2 Moons and called Noob I knew it was time for me to leave. So I don't mind occasional PvP if it's not enforced, or at least the community is casual PvPer friendly.
So all in all I'm looking for a game that offers a huge world to explore (that is what lacked in most F2P games. Not much to see or do) and where crafting doesn't involve staring at my character swinging a pick-axe for hours. A bit RP and a not so static good community who have their choke hold on the newcomers and that puts fun in games over scientific number crunching. Or something like that.
I'd take any recommendation, with info if it's P2P or F2P and what the game is like and has to offer.
thanks in advance.

Have you considered Vanguard?
1) I can't express how huge the world is
2) My experience with the community so far has only been positive. Everyone appears to be friendly. Players stop along their journey to say hi and have a quick chat - often asking if you need help. The game suffers from a slight lack of players, but that's only really noticeable as a result of the world being so huge.
3) Crafting I haven't had much experience with, but it seems fun. Chopping down trees that actually fall to the ground once you've done chopping them makes for a nice touch.
4) I've seen numerous people roleplaying and guilds advertising themselves as roleplaying guilds
5) PvP is apparently non-existent on PvE servers, so no need to worry about them PvPers
6) The world is beautiful and immersive. I have come across a bug or two but if you have the PC to handle it you should be blown away by the graphics and soundtrack.
7) It is a P2P game and a friend got it for me for $19.99 in-store. I'm not sure where.
I agree. Vanguard or possibly Lord of the rings.
If I discover within myself a desire which no experience in this world can satisfy, the most probable explanation is that I was made for another world

Lord of the rings online is pretty good. And you can pay once and play free for life.
Lord of the Rings Complete edition would be ideal for you
it includes both : Shadows of Angmar and Mines of moria.
So the world is realy massive and quite relaxing and has non forced pvp almost all the things you look for trough is somewhat a bid linear, but still good amount of fun and might be worth a try, it has almost endless quests and content, but if your not realy intro Lord of the rings it might not be your cup of tea.
Playing: World of Warcraft.
Played: Lord of the Rings Online, Starwars Galaxies.
Tried: Starwars the Old Republic, Everquest 2, Guild Wars, Vanguard, Age of Conan, Aion.
So what kind of games are they? What do they have to offer (I can read things up, but I don't want advertising texts that praise their games), what sets em apart and so on. What else is out there that gives you a variety of activities? F2P games usually don't have much to offer in terms of different things you can do, any exceptions? Do they have trials to check the games? Any other suggestions?
Nothing else? I read people were only semi-satisfied with both games and I also like to know what they are like, or what they have to offer. Even knowing what games *not* to try with those things I'm looking for would be a help.
