New addon = Influx of idiots

As usual, a new addon and an influx of annoying children and adults (who insist on behaving like children).

I logged in this morning and all I could see was people announcing every step of their levelling process (50% until 51, 5% until 52 etc), people who obviously only came back to race to 60, tell everyone about it for a few days and then leave until the next addition of content.

The more I play MMOs these days, the sadder it makes me. Back in the day, MMO communities were helpful, elaborate and it was a welcome escape from RL, now it is just like RL. The commercialization of MMOs, as inevitable as it was, is simply tragic.

I guess Ill log in 2 or 3 weeks from now when most of these idiots are gone.

True enough, but even better to wait for that crowd to plow through the content and leave .... it doesnt usually take them very long.

I agree with you OP coming from UO and DAoC in a time when players played the game for the thrill of the game and not how fast they can max out a number. It is very annoying.

We don't need chat filters, we just need less idiots typing over chat.

And ruin most games for others with their selfish "Im the best" attitude. The problem is that their way of thinking does not promote teamplay or any kind of group cohesion. It is simply "Get to 60, brag, brag, brag and then leave the game"

When I said something about it on OOC, some of them openly admitted they hadnt played for months and had only come back to get to 60 before anyone else!

I guess Im just not wired to understand how that is "fun". I think it stems from being totally inadequate IRL and TBH, its the only explanation I can come up with.

Yeah, i have to say that ever since I logged into the first day to open beta from closed beta, I was shocked at some of the "chit chat" that was going on in OOC.

It completely ruined the game world for me.

I suppose that goes back to another thread on these boards of "why don't people talk in MMO's anymore".

I now make sure OOC is turned off so that I never have to deal with that. I doubt I'll even notice these guys.

I"m not quite sure that would work they way you would want it to work.

Part of how we hear has to do with our brain being able to discern where certain sounds are coming from within a 3d environment. Our ears are able to focus on certain speakers even though we are in a crowded room.

With the "everyone in the same small area Idea, we would have a problem filtering out some of the other speakers unless the the area was very very small and we weren't next to another group of speakers.

Also, given the quality of these online chat systems, whether it be built into the game or vent or TS, I can't say that the experience would be all that pleasant.

The only way I can see it work is if your characters had to be in a very small diameter for the voice chat to interface with the next player. You would also have to be far enough away from other players so that you didn't pick up their chat.

And then once that was done you would just have the same quality of voice chat you normally would get.

My personal opinion, go head and enjoy your game ! shout to the world what you did ! that is what the lotrO community is about, you can be yourself with out having to deal with people nagging about it. These people have every right to express their enjoyment over the game as much as you like to be silent and make the game feel empty.
Bottomline is that they give the motivation to people who may not be as high , but in ear shot the will power to continue to play, with out that batch of first run to the top people, a lot of other people who don't do that don't have the motivation to continue to play .
Yes , maybe they sound like chilfdren "to some" but for the health of the game it brings a balance of complete bordom and emtyness, to life and enthusiasm. Seriously think if your that disturbed about people being excited, then maybe you should wait to play.....  Shoot even I shout about things I do  cause I'm proud to have accomplish it .

You clearly dont understand what I mean. Im not saying the game should be silent, I just dont need to hear that you have 5% of a level left or that you're the greatest thing since sliced bread because you were the 1st one to Lvl 60 in what amounts to a fairly simplistic video game.

As much as I agree with the OP with the fact I hate when people say "ding" all the dam time I think we are the minority in MMO's as every game I have played has this now.

Its a way to get other people to pat them on the back and say "good job" just like mommy used to when you cleaned your room or got a good report card.

Guild chat is usally the worst for it but I usually just deal with it as even my close friends do it also. My server had set up a global chat channel for finding groups and I am afraid so many people may not use it now because of it being abused by the "ding" players.

So I am sorry to say but we will probably have to hear every time someone levels or gets a good drop for the next 2 - 3 weeks or so.

I hear that, Ive been in so many guilds full of attention whores who need to have their ego massaged everytime they fart. May as well have "grats" hotkeyed somewhere really. But thats part of it. People doing it in public chat doesnt really bother me. Im not going to tear someone down just because they feel good about their in game accomplishments. If they want to shout it to the rafters that they're almost to level 52 good on them. I find it easy, maybe they dont. /shrug

Anyway if you like whining so much, and are such a "back in the days" bit**, i guess nto many people will be missing you during these 2-3 weeks

Some of the upcoming next-gen releases break the mold set by WoW style mmos (which of course includes lotro), which means you will see a lot less short-attention spanned childish players in them, since those types tend to aggregate in the easier mmo's.

It'll be a while.. but it'll get better.. there's a couple of said candidates up for possibly next year.

No, not whining, just making an observation about that type of gamer and how unpleasant their presence is in any MMO. We didnt use to have that when MMOs and computers in general were a little more exclusive. Now everyone's an "expert".

It's pretty funny tbh and easily avoided by waiting the requisite week or so for them to move back to AoC or WAR.

There is nothing wrong with enjoying a sense of accomplishment, Im all for that. There IS something wrong with announcing everything you do in OOC.

Some who have posted here understand the difference.

i'm gonna just throw something out there here... the thought just crossed my mind, but could shed a little light/truth on this phenomenon that's being discussed here.

so, the cross section of people playing mmo's are generally going to fit into the brackets of well off (have money and have leisure time to play) and are either unable or incapable or uninclinded to socialize predominantly in person to person relationships. these assumptions follow the logic that to afford a computer, internet, game, subscriptions plus make enough money to have leisure time to fulfill the hobby of an mmo. (some people need to work multiple jobs just to pay rent and eat and don't have extra time for gaming, etc...)

if this assumed cross section of the population is correct than a couple deductions can be made:

    a) being well off tends to provide an individual with relatively few life challenging moments forcing a person to learn lessons in humility, acceptance, loss, etc. being well off by definition means that your life has relatively few set backs. it's been said that a person learns nothing from winning, but the act of loosing can elicit great wisdom.

    b) being uninclinded, unable, or incapable of socializing a great deal in public, face to face, robs a person of learning what the natural laws of getting along with others in a society or community. a person has to be either born gifted with natural charisma or do a great deal of socializing in person (where you're faced to deal with both your winning and loosing social steps) to be able to learn what works and doesn't work in relationships.

while this horribly simplistic, i'd say the unfortunate circumstance is that the cross section of people that tend to play mmo's tend to be spoiled or just unaware of how to communicate effectively or appropriately in a social situation, albeit a virtual social situation in the case of an mmo.

heheh, i crack myself up... flame on!

That its a great Idea, but also be able to filter out stuff and only hear your party members only. I think True Fantasy online was going to do that but it got canned.  If done right in games  it will not ruin immersion unless there is a guy talking and hes playing a female character.  I like to use voice chat in parties cuz its a lot easier to talk than type and fight.   I know some people don't like voice chat but to me those people seem to be the shy type.Or they say if  I wanted to talk somone i would go outside and talk to somone,  but yet they type and communicate with people in the game.  But thats cool with me to each their own.

As for the OP post, I say just use the filters, thats what they are there for, its only a  few clicks away.  Yeah it may be annoying but your not going to get a long with everyone in this world and everyone likes to play games differently. If everyone played a game the same way I think it would be borring.  So if you are not going to log for a few weeks because of some people you don't want to filter out just boggles my mind. You paid for the sub why not play the game.

Its the same thing as Chuck Norris jokes.

NOONE CARES IF CHUCK NORRIS CAUSED MT ST HELEN TO ERUPT DUE TO A ROUNDHOUSE!!!!

The above is an example of the massive stupidity blasted across most games in a general chat situation.

It has even been taken a step further now in WoW is "Anal" [Skill]

    Examples:

Anal "Intimidation" <- Hunter Beast Mastery Talent

Anal "Scorch" <- Mage Fire skill

They will sit there for 6 hours straight using Anal and just about any skill known to wow after it....

Seriously how friggin stupid do you have to be to think this is funny or a good idea.

So yes OP many of us DO know what your saying... and you are right.

Now 6 hours of that will most likely get on my nerves but Id just filter it out. But Id have to say Anal "Scorch" was quite funny when i first read it. . It doesn't take someone stupid to think that its funny,I guess some of us are blessed to think that most everything is funny.    I love to laugh that's why I think that most things are funny.
