I wish they would give us Vet's just one server pre-cu, throw in space ships, and leave it the hell alone! I just say ships because I quit before jump to light speed. I like to see how many people would return if they promised that! YOU probably going too ask why I quit? Cause in those days there where other MMO's I wanted to try and limited resouces(never knew they would go to such measure's that I could never return!).
Agreed and signed. No idea why they as a game company are so against of having this back, can call it star wars classic or something. I think they would be surpised by the number of people that would return.
Yeah, I just don't understand what you're doing here. There's a SWG Vet Refuge in the SWG section, you can whine there.
Yes there is a forum www.mmorpg.com/discussion2.cfm/forum/802 where the disgruntled vets complain about the past. Don't make this forum into another crying forum. And yes I too enjoyed the old SWG...and a few other games that have been WoWified over the years...but hey, ya get over it n move on.
pre-cu is no longer just a catch phrase calling for a rollback. it has taken on a bigger meaning on many game forums. it is a call for the return of the golden age of mmo gaming and a reminder of better days.

Aye, but I think that inference goes right over the heads of the 'Target Audience'.

Ah, that elusive "target audience", people who want to play a simplified dumbed down game and pay for the priviledge. That betrayed SOE and the "brilliant designers" of the NGE... by not existing...
To this day, the greatest irony is that the parts of the current SWG game that people point out as being it's best points are ALWAYS parts of the original game that SOE hasn't bothered to remove.
You didn't miss a ton. The game was buggy and broken from day 1. The only thing that saved it was the fact that fans clung to it because it was Star Wars, and because they left you with a good amount of freedom to insert the fun on your own that the developers didn't put in.
On the contrary, I don't consider myself to be much of a Star Wars fan. I didn't actually see the trilogy until I had been playing SWG for a few months. When I started playing I had a pretty good idea beforehand of the characters and plot, but seeing the films wasn't magical for me like it would have or could have been if I'd watched them in the early 80's. I can say that I definitely didn't cling to the game for the fact that it was a Star Wars IP.
I had been playing another game and many of my friends from said game were trying out or making the move to SWG. I joined them near Christmas 2003 right at the time when vehicles were added. We'd had many (past) in-game discussions about what elements and mechanics we would like to see in the next MMO we played. SWG not only met the criteria we sought, but exceeded many of the ideas we had shared for the recipe of a great game (Yes, even with all of its Pre-CU bugs and imbalance). I loved the game for its innovation, sandbox gameplay, immersion, character inter-dependence, community and depth.
*Has had his head in the clouds* So wait has SWG gone class specific now? Or can you still be a dancer fighter or what ever you want? because I was thinking about re-subbing.
I really really wish that SOE would open a pre-CU server, just to show that most people would probably hate it today. Memories have this bad habit of making unattainable things of the past look much better than they were. While I agree that the NGE was a bad mistake, you just can't completly change a game after release, the original game was a lag filled bugfest. It took 2 weeks of casual play to max a character and there was not much to do once there. I'll wait for SW:Tor and hope that Bioware lives up to its name...

Time certainly has a way of making happy memories happier, and bad memories worse... fortunetly for us, there's a version of SWG out there (albiet incomplete) for all of us to taste of it's greatness. And yes, you can still taste it's greatness.
BTW, awesome handle there Red_Rider, love that movie,

The issue there is that comes down to what type of player you are.
I played UO from 1997-2002 I honestly have never played another MMO (with no breaks) for 5 years straight.
I can honestly say that I would still be playing "pre-cu" SWG... then again I always had something to do.
Blanket statements don't work one way or the other. If they opened Pre-CU servers... The people who were still enjoying the game (if they went back) would most likely still enjoy. The people who didn't enjoy the game or couldn't get the idea of how a sandbox works.. still wouldn't enjoy it.
That would be a more accurate example.
What you said actually reminds me of when a developer talks about "rose colored glasses". All the while ignoring the fact that "back in the day" they actually had a subscriber base. Now with all the current changes.. they don't.
And the above isn't just about SWG... Even in DAoC when people wanted a real classic server they were told the same thing relatively. People then counter that all games lose subs over time... that's true.. oddly enough all games change over time too. One would think this might be related...
Well one MMO doesn't seem to lose much sub wise over time so far.. but I hate talking about that game.. so I won't.

Thats just it, people were not enjoying it all that much and leaving, thats why the panic set in and they did those kinds of changes. I played UO from release for 3 years and then EQ1 for 5 ( with about 6 month overlap playing both). And since then I have been jumping around between several games.
The situation is far different today than 11 years ago, choice abounds and there is always something new on the horizon.
As for them losing subs because they made changes, I really think they start making changes when they start losing subs. And sometimes it even works, I don't think EQ2 would still be alive today, had they not done some major changes. And like it or not, even SWG has a rebuilt a viable subscriber base, even though I don't think it will survive the release of SW:Tor.
As for WoW, they lose tons of players, but gain new ones at least as fast. The game boxes have been on the top ten lists for 4 years, while most other MMO's can't even get a new expansion on store shelves.

SWG has NOT been successful rebuilding its playerbase. I suppose if you are on one of the populated servers that are seeing character transfers from the dead and dying servers, it would be easy to believe so. Also, $OE is giving over three months or more free play time a year via vets trials, so during those times, the population numbers are sure to be padded. $OE wouldn't have developed free transfers if the population issue hadn't become as serious as it has now. Like it or not, the dead servers attest to this.
The release of the NGE devastated the playerbase, and although some players came back as content was put in, another unwanted revamp, the C6CD occured and that chased off many of the newly regained players and the dead and dying server became painfully evident - which caused the mass transfers, rerolls and cancellations that more obvious. Collections that should have been side content became the framework for quests. Group intensive heroics (nonscalable) instances were put in, which were not friendly to the majority of servers that were sparsely populated.
Changes are needed in the course of a game's life, but it is the type of changes that have to be considered. Removing or nerfing content, items and abilities which negates players' time and effort is not the types of change that endears a playerbase to a game and the company that runs it. Not fixing bugs and addressing exploits in a timely manner are not going to attract and keep players either.
Changes that add immersive and innovative content and gives more choices and abilities that actually enhances what is already in the game is desirable and players benefit as a whole. A great game will attract and keep players by offering a quality product, good customer service, challenging content and positive changes. SWG has been unable to regain the playerbase it lost almost overnight and still has serious issues with player retention. $OE has failed to learn any lessons from their blunders. I do agree......it is highly unlikely SWG will survive the SW: TOR release - - especailly since it appears to be appealing to the same target audience.
this game was the sandbox of mmo's, the class tree was amazing, the player housing, beastmaster, all of it, it was such a great game and they blew it.. how did they not realize this and switch it back to pre-CU .. if thats possible!
I was thinking about this today, I sometimes still do when Im itching for that special gaming fix. SWG just DID it for me. Like that maybe not the best looking girl in the world but the one that you always end up fantasizing aobut kinda way. Sadly the reason they wont bring back pre-CU server is because it would tank. Not because it was a bad game but because it requires a healthy community to be fun probably more so than any other MMO to be created. With the bad press they've recieved, the amount of time that has elapsed, it wouldnt save SWG and just thin out what is left of the population on the servers they already have. It was a great niche game and my favorite game of all time but its not coming back. EMU even if/when it works properly will not be the same game. There just wont be enough people interested anymore.
