I have to admit, while it's slow...it is very involving!
This is the first game where crafting is literally crafting. I remember in SWG I had to grind grind grind grind 1000s of pieces of items to progress up the chart.
In this game the items you can make is the same as mobs: easy, medium, hard, and very difficult.
They give you various crafting abilities also to help with it and it is very very involving. Also, you don't have to grind away either. You just have to make the necessary parts to make the bugger product.

This review, althought negative in aspects, has a pretty long artisan commentary, even though some seem issues she takes a little personal. Just wanted everyone's opinions on this compared to hers. Oh and the artisan stuff is about 1/2 way down.

I like to know if you can get your own raw materials (mining your ore, cutting down trees for wood)? I really enjoy that about UO and like to see it here. Thank you.

Yup, that's how you get those types of items. Either buy them off other players or go mine them, forest them, etc.
At the moment you just click on a rock that you can mine, and a bar will fill up, and it will say "You mined a.." or "You failed to mine anything from..". Though I asked a question a few weeks ago if there would be any kind of animation for it, and a dev said they already had animations, and now they just had to code it.

hi, yea i hope the crafting system is good as i prefer to craft and find my own resorses. last i heard from WOW was could only learn so many skills per avatar and i dislike that. ill mine, chop wood, fish, what ever to get my own items to craft and have as much fun as the person who goes out and kills everything
Well EQ2 is kind of similar to WoW in that you can only specialize in one craft.
There is no limit to how many things you can mine, forest, etc., but you can only choose one craft.
For more info go here.
EDIT: I think at level 10 artisan skill is when you choose one of the 3 subclasses, then one of the 9 at 20?
I'm not sure.. but I've gotten myself interested in crafting now so I'm going to go check it out. :P
