There is reason why I say something so rediculous. My point is that you should not be able to test a game before buying it unless you see a friend playing it or something to that extent. Do you get to try Halo or any other console game before you buy it? Not really. So I dont think you should try an MMO before you buy it.
You do have a point.
However, if I may make a counter-point.
Console games usually do not require a monthly subscription.
Console games usually are not something that you may ask you entire guild to purchase as well, sometimes well into the 100+ of players.
Console games usually have a co-op mode built into them that enable 2-4 more players to play at the same time even though only a single unit was purchased.
Console games usually can be rented at most local video stores for a very small percentage of their actual price.
Console games usually have a very active after-market business where it is quite easy to pick up a used copy at a fraction of it's retail price.
Those are a few reasons I could think of off the top of my head why I believe that the MMO to console comparison is comparing two very differnt genres. Even though the games themselves may not be much different in the look and feel.. they are to me at least very different indeed.
Would you pre-order Duke Nuke'em Forever based solely on the assurance of the "developers" that it's almost finished (for real this time)? (aka, without a playable demo)
That goes for any mmorpg, not only DF. Buying without trying isn't necessary since most of them offers a trial at some point. And if the trial comes several months after release, that's actually something good, since you get to see how the game managed through the first vital months.
this is my answer for any videogame im looking to purchase not only mmog or DF in special. i'll never purchase a game which i can't test before buying.
Have to vote a NO here, too many times have i purchased an online subscription game to only become very dissapointed in the game. Now i go for trying to go in and have a first hand look befiore i buy it.
To date only WoW has proven to hold me from this and at least 5 others have had me cursing. Now if i dont test/play it before i purchase it i wont get it.
No because this company asked me to PAY to beta test for them... vaporware extreme..
These are the kind of idiotic, brainless, and unfounded responses that bred the fanboys you all hate so much. Maybe if you guys could pull you collective heads out of your asses we wouldn't have this situation.
I mean, I don't think I could have produced a more contradictory, troll ridden, and inaccurate statement if I tried.

Given what we know of the MMO genre, I guess I'm surprised there would be even 1 who would buy not just DarkFall... but ANY MMO without an Open Beta or Free Trial.
Sure, why not? In most countries you have the right to return any purchase, including software, if it is faulty or not as advertised, regardless of what the shop says. Just clearly and boldly state to them that under the relevant government Act, you are entitled to FULL REFUND (not just an exchange) if goods are faulty or not as advertised. Note that this also usually covers internet purchases and credit card purchases.
There is normally a consumer-oriented government website that summarises all this info, in the UK it is consumerdirect.co.uk
i returned AoC after 2 weeks saying that it was buggy to the point of unplayable, and that it said it supported massive sieges and DX10 on the box, which it didn't. I got a full refund in the UK.

I would, and personaly I think half of those that say they would not would crack as soon as they saw the box in a store and get it.
Let's face it anyone who's played a decent share of MMO's has done it and know's that everytime a mildly hyped mmo comes out you just feel a need to try it out, I do anyways. For some reason there's always this lingering thought in the back of my mind that maybe, just maybe this game will meet my expectations, so like other's have posted I have bought crap in the past purely off hype alone and would probably do it again. Even crappy mmo's I usually get at least a month of play out of, so its not a complete loss.

I never give money to developers that think we are a bunch of morons that would buy anything they throw at us. I am very careful. I was about to buy WAR, I even ordered it when I read the first wave of good user reviews, but I was lucky, EA store was not working well and I cancelled it, just when the next wave of really bad reviews started to appear and decided not to buy it.
So for me, if I see a Darkfall box in a store, it can sit there for years unless general consensus is that the game is what we all are expecting from it.

Nothing says "I'm cool" like not buying something because people have conflicting opinions..
But in all seriousness..
Every game will have bad reviews. Some of the worst rated movies.. are the best (herald and Kumar!)..
I'm not taking a shot.. just saying that you really shouldn't judge your views based on everyone elses opinion. Hell, the biggest changes come fron one man standing against the rest..

Yes, I would buy the game without a free beta/trial, provided it got good reviews by companies like PC GAmer, IGN, CNet, and so forth, and I liked what I read in the reviews.
Thanks all for the many responses. Too many to respond to each individually. Thanks as well for keeping the banter fairly civil... with perhaps just one or two exceptions.
No. Only MMOs I would buy without trying first are either ones that are sequels to game I like, Guildwars 2 is one or are based on a RPG world I love like world of darkness online or if someone actually do a forgotten realm based game. If they don't at least let me try for a few hours I would suspect that they have something to hide.
I agree wholly with this poster's comment.

I decided to not play betas anymore. Never liked them because they spoil to me some of the best moments of a game: a fresh start in a new game at launch. Moreover i failed miserably to evaluate AoC because i limited myself to play chars till lvl 20 in the beta and i bought it. Then no more betas.
I said that one of the best moments to me is the start in a new game at launch, but i know I'm going to do it only in games developed for the couple of companies (may be 3) i trust because my past experiences.
For the rest I'm not going to buy them until at least 2 months after launch and after tried them. Aventurine is not a company yet in my list. May be they will be there after DFO launch. I hope so.
Obviously not a lot of votes yet, but I'm curious if one of those that voted Yes would like to expound upon their reasoning? Given what we know of the MMO genre, I guess I'm surprised there would be even 1 who would buy not just DarkFall... but ANY MMO without an Open Beta or Free Trial. Perhaps the promise of what DarkFall could be is enough? I guess I just don't have that kind of trust anymore. Hopefully the DarkFall Devs will do the right thing as they've stated time and again that they will... we'll all find out soon.
I would Ive followed the game activelly since the end of 2003, but I have known about the game since 2000 when they got their first investor.
I dont need prof that things are good or working, the prize of mmoprg etc.. isnt really an issue, money in terms of mmorpgs isnt an issue, hell a pint of beer cost $12 here
I think this poll is being read in different ways by each person here. What if it was A:) Free to Download and 10$/month to play the beta? Or even a flat fee 25$ and you get the first three months free? Something like that...?
Some people are like slinkies, they dont really have a purpose, but they still bring a smile to your face when you push them down the stairs.
im going to say no. i got sucked into the AoC hype and will never do that again until i am able to at least beta test an mmo. i would never buy one blindly and not know anything about it again. i first would want to read some reviews on the game and at least talk to someone i know who has played the game.

It's basically the same question.
My vote: No

If they are gonna sell it then Im gonna buy it.
if its not playable it wont hit the stores.
Yah maybe there will be issues like AOC but heck if I can play AOC for almost 5 months now I can play anything :P
Why not? AOC and WAR both had betas and they suck!
Beta isn't what it use to be...
i voted No,
