Well, you still kind of have to accept that the game is a translation of the 3.5 rules and many modifications and alterations have been made for the sake of "game play".  I also bought it when it came out and thought it was "interesting" yet lacked what anyone would expect from an MMO let alone one based upon D&D.

Coming back a year later the game still had the core design but the improvements upon the dynamics and game play made it an incredible experiance that I've yet to experiance elsewhere.  The game isn't perfect, but it's a hell of a lot better now then it was when it first launched.

The community is also pretty good and it makes the questing so much more enjoyable.  Get a mic, DDO players generally enjoy conversing while playing the game and helps to facilitate strategies on the fly.  ;)

There was some stuff I liked about Warhammer (PQ's & RvR) although the community seemed to be full of less then skillful players.  I was on Phoenix Throne which is a RP server and the community was mature.  The standard servers on the otherhand seemed very similar to the community level of what I experianced in WoW.

You're bound to find an asshat in DDO although it's genrally a rare occasion.  I personaly would say the most negative experiance encountered is people just having too much fun on a friday evening and they characters stumble about as if they were as drunk as the players controling them - this can actually be a lot of fun as long as someone's not blurting constant profanity.  ;)
