"Vaporware is a term used to describe a software or hardware product that is announced by a developer well in advance of release, but which then fails to emerge after having well exceeded the period of development time that was initially claimed or would normally be expected for the development cycle of a similar product."
I don't need to personally try it, nor do I need to try every MMORPG on the market. I've played MMORPGs for a long time now (7 years), so I am pretty adept at knowing if I will like a game or not. I'll pretty much be relying on player reviews from the target audience, not the mainstream gamers that give it a try and find out they hate it (big surprise).
If the majority of reviews are good and they say the game is stable and balanced, I'll give it a try eventually. I say eventually, because I actually like WoTLK and can see myself playing it for many months to come. Plus SW: ToR is out there in the future sometime and that takes priority over everything. So we'll see how the reviews come and when they release the game in relation to how long WoTLK has been out and how long SW: ToR has until it will be released. DF really is my dream game though, too bad it's being made by Indy Developers without much money to release a polished game, which I am used to by now. Adventurine needs to earn my respect before I buy their game and they will earn in when they can maintain subs from their core audience.

Obviously not a lot of votes yet, but I'm curious if one of those that voted Yes would like to expound upon their reasoning? Given what we know of the MMO genre, I guess I'm surprised there would be even 1 who would buy not just DarkFall... but ANY MMO without an Open Beta or Free Trial. Perhaps the promise of what DarkFall could be is enough? I guess I just don't have that kind of trust anymore. Hopefully the DarkFall Devs will do the right thing as they've stated time and again that they will... we'll all find out soon.
I voted "Yes " for the same reason I buy a single player game without playing the demo. First, $50 isn't going to break me. Second, I can rely on reviews from others that play it, since I'm experienced enough in the genre to know what type of game I like. If players are reviewing the game to be what I like, I might give it a try eventually.

If it got released and people and press says it's great. Then Yes, I would buy it.
Without any words about it. No, i don't

I bought Age of Conan knowing fully well that it would probably suck. It did and I boxed it back up and sold it on Amazon for 2/3 of what I bought it for. So I got to try a game for less that 15 bucks.
I also bought WAR and canceled it (I'm keeping the box for this one - it's fun in smaller doses).
I will buy DF, and if it sucks I will put it back in the box and sell it to someone else. If it's decent I will let it collect some dust and if it's great it will be the best surprise all year. It won't be the last game I buy. Plus, I spend that amount of money on two movie tickets with popcorn and drinks.
From what I have read on the forums, and heard from other players, I think they may have a very solid game here. I am greatly impressed by some of the stories the mmorpg guys have been writting, and lookforward to the game release. I have only EVER bought 1 MMO having not played a demo/trial, and that was StarWars Galaxies. I absolutely loved that game. Once SOE changed everything about it to what it is now, I have been looking for a game to replace the fun, expandability, character choices, and social options SWG once had. I believe this game has the capibility of doing so.
Now I say this on screenshots, hype, forum posts, mmorpg stories, and game description alone. I really hope to not be dissappointed if I can ever buy the game. I intend on buying atleast 4 copies from the start. One for me, one for my wife, and one for each of my kids. I really hope this game is as good as it sounds.
Keep up the great work everyone at Aventurine. It sounds like you have a solid product. AND WHATEVER YOU DO, DO NOT TAKE POINTERS ABOUT GAME UPDATES FROM SOE!!!!!
I honestly was curious how Darkfall would play out. I think its an interesting type of an MMORPG but given its gameplay im having trouble wanting to pay 15 a month for this game. If this game was free id prob play it alot. But for a fee? I dont think its my cup of tea. Even with a beta/free trial I dont think I would pay for it. All I see so far is more bad posts then good regarding the games health from this site and others.
Now if Darkfall was done a little differently I may have considered it. But most of the pvp gameplay looks like you spend most of your time running around in circles pressing 1-2-3 buttons max, and the pve is basically standing still pressing slash. Now this is my opinion based on a multitude of youtube videos and other links from various sites. I wish everyone that is enjoying the game a blast, Im glad the pvp realm of mmorpgs have something in regards to full loot.
The only MMO company I would buy a game from without trying it first is Turbine. I have played all four games they have released, and greatly enjoyed them all. (Yes, even the commercial flop that was AC2. Still think it was under rated). They have proven themselves to me in a way that no other MMO company has.

Not a chance. When I smell DFO, I smell D&L all over again.
Fear not fanbois, we are not trolls, let's take off your tin foil hat and learn what VAPORWARE is:

Exactly my thoughts.

Same here, was ready to say this before opening this thread. I won't fall for another bullshit D&L. Hopefully it won't be like that.

Not really seeing how I can get burned here.
No.
With so much promised and so little scene that is believable...this is a must try before you buy game.
Looking forward to giving it a whirl though.
I said yes.

I wouldn't even play it for free, why the heck would I pay for it.
Says the guy with the warhammer pic. What a horrible game that is. The only game to take the carebearness of WoW and multiple it by 10.

Umm... just pointing out that slamming another MMO does NOT automatically make your favorite MMO better. Just saying.
AS the OP of this thread... it was kinda funny to go back and read some of the responses from back in November of 2008.
Thanks for the necro... it make me lol at some of the "old-timers".
