This game is what i have been waiting for, for a very long time. Since i left UO renaisance i have missed so many aspects of that game and cant help but compare just about every game i play to it. The comradary, the housing, the skills set, the freedom. These have all made up what ive always considered the best MMO ever, but only one thing was lacking that was graphics. They did try and bring the UO graphics up a bit but they still fell short, then with graphics there is that problem with not enough users haveing the rig to run the game.
WoW was lucky in the fact that nobody minded the cartoony graphics everyone was used to from the RTS titles, so when people started playing it they fell right in love with it. Plus no one had any problems running the game so they didnt need to spend any money and getting there friends online playing wasnt hard cause none of them had to upgrade anything to play it.
Now Runes of Magic has come into the picture, the only downfall i forsee for this game is the lack of following, it doesnt have any past games im aware of to pull a fan base from, which was the key behind WoW's success. But it has everything any good MMO has ever had, it has simple but attractive graphics, it has skills which the player gets to customize, it has multi classing, it has housing right from the start. Most importantly about the housing is the ability to customize them, make them your own display and show off your spoils, trophies and valuables from your adventures. This is partly what brought on the multiplayer aspect of UO, was the conversation pieces that players would display. They cause envy, they cause drive, they create goals for lower level characters. The value of having a customizable house is almost infinite, plus its a refuge for people to go to when they want to get away from the constant grinding.
Just imagine, you been grinding levels, quest, and your crafting for about 2 hours and you really need a change of pace something to change it up a bit before you go back to "work" so to speak. Now you go to your house and begin rearranging your special items in ways that will bring "oooohh's from peoples mouths as they enter your humble abode. The sudden sense of accomplishment you gain from this is enough to let you go back to the grinding work of leveling, crafting, and questing if nothing else to look forward to the next trophy you get to mount on your wall.
I personally feel this game will be underrated and overlooked, like so many games out there have been. People dont realize what this game really brings to the table, they look at some pictures and make assumptions about it without actually reading anythign about the game on the website. I just hope that people can realize that not just the names we know can be good games, but anyone at anytime could come out with the next big game that sets the new standard for games of all genres.
Thank you for your time.
Beware the "Shadow Rogues"!

Ill try RoM, but im am very sceptical of F2P MMO's. In my experiance they are very shallow. I hope RoM breaks this mold but time will tell all. As long as I am having fun thats all that matters. If i am having fun I will most likly spend 10-15 a month in an item shop to support the game development as this is what I would pay in a p2p game..
Waiting for:EQ-Next, ArcheAge (not so much anymore)

Worst MMO: FFXIV
Favorite MMO: FFXI
RoM is the best F2P game, no dobt about it. But it's graphics have very hard to compete with the new P2P games. I love the amount of quest that's in the game, no need for a lot of grinding there. The sounds suck badly, particulary the "Swosh" sound mages make.
Still, it is not the main game I been loking for, a good secondary game to play at times when the main game feels boring however. No, I still wait for the perfect game, hoping for Spellborn, Guildwars 2, Worl of darkness online or the old republic... Off course I might never find one to fit me perfectly and even if I do, ROM is good entertainment as an alt game.
For Free to play games. I pick Runes of Magic. Its a very awsome game. Almost beats some of the pay to play games but only time will tell. Open Beta we will all get to see.
-GUILDMASTER OF WICKED RED-
hmm is there a date set for open beta?

Open Beta is on December 9th or if delayed, on the 16th.
Yeah, this is quite possibly the best f2p I've played. The thing I like the most is the dual class system and the amount of quests.
For me It is the best F2P MMORPG I have seen. Even better then some Paid MMO's
Hands down the best F2P on the market. Being so similar to WoW will be both a blessing and a curse. It will be met with derision from the WoW-haters, but will draw in a huge playerbase mainly from those who want to play WoW, but cannot afford to do so.
Well it ain't a WoW clone imho. TBH WoW is a bit more balanced when it comes to questing and skills.
The only similarity might be the gfx. The Craft system is different, the PVP system will be different in some parts. There is a housing system (could be better in RoM), there is the dual Class system.
I hate when people say it is a WoW clone only based on movies people has seen.
Well, I have wow as well as well as a friend of mine. He watched me play RoM and we both agree it's pretty WoW clonish.
You have a bit of the graphics, the way you accept quests, the layout of message boxes, the layout of the HUD, the skills system, the spells system.... the thing is, it may not be a absolute WoW clone, as in WoW copy/paste, obviously because it's a different game, but there are so many obvious similarities the games are definatly related to each other.
That said, I DO LOVE RoM as a free MMO. Since I dont play wow anymore, Im looking into the F2P world and besides GW, the best Ive tried so far are "Perfect World" International, and Rubies of Eventide.
But this game beats them. SO even though it's very WoWish, I still like it.
I wish the creators would have a mind of their own though when they make any more changes instead of making more wow features.

Well my opinion is different. If you really want a WoW clone, try Lotro.
The hud stuff is older then wow. Try Lineage, or Horizons, that is also the same sort of ui. So WoW is a clone of those games too???
Guessing you havn't read what the devs of RoM have said from the beginning but their entire inspiration for RoM was from UO and WoW, and they planned from the beginning to make it similar but with many changes. Like the housing and PvP and other things...
I'm looking forward to it as well, as I don't mind the WoW look, but the additional options and things that WoW doesn't have are pulling me in.

Sure, I know that the developers has wow in mind, but almost same HUD just looks silly. But as long as it's free, Im not mad at anything. Im just saying, admit it's wowish.... more WoWish than just about any other game. Not bad, but stop decieving yourselves.

Well, actually those games' hud is quite different. RoM looks identical with wow.
TOTRO looks more like Dungeon Seige.
Lineage looks very different.
Have you seen the RoM hud layout?
Like I said, it may not be bad, but it's plain silly to copy a game to very close similarities.
Like the XP bar isn't solid, but has the wow bubble thing. It didn't have to be that way.

i'm in the beta, no doubt it's the best f2p out there.
But (for the moment) it cannot compete with p2p best games. if the devs do a very good job, it may in the future get very near the top
This game does look pretty good, but like many have said before, the F2P piece doesn't do anything for me. They're just not up to the quality of P2P, in my experience.
I'll keep an open mind though and check it out when it's released.
No doubt about it, the next best mmo is not going to be anything anyone expected, one or three of the low key independent games.
Runes looks alright, but as previously stated, you get what you pay for, or there's always some catch, with free to play games. Because they most certainly are not cheap for the company to run, so they need $ somehow.
No doubt many many of you are just as tired as me of the generic same-old same-old that f2p and p2p mmo devs put out too, how does Runes fit in that?
oh btw the dual class system is really great! allows you to build a very unique character, by mixing up different classes (rogue with basic healing, or war with casting abilities etc...)
this feature is the defining caracteristic of RoM

all this carrying on about WoW is pathetic, WoW is not really the standard for these type of games, it just happened to have a very large following and a very simple dummy tutorial so literally anyone could pick it up and play it. as far as similarities, the graphics, which include the UI, are about the only thing similar to WoW. Everything else is pretty much the same old basic stuff from your average MMO which is used in all sorts of MMOs all the way back to UO. But none the less this is not the point here, this game has taken elements from diff games whether intentional or not and combined them to make one really interesting game. They even said themselves that they want to appeal to everyone, which is what MMO is all about, not just having a genre of MMO, which i think is absurd, but having something for everyone. The real challenge will be staying up with updates and expansions, which is alot harder when your a f2p game. But if RoM can maintain even close to what the people ask for in ADDITIONS not in stuff to be taken out, then they will succeed. That is why this thread is about this game being possibly the best MMO.

your making a fool of yourself, you should read before posting. he just said they said from the beginning its based on WoW, the main premise behind using the WoW look is the lack of high end hardware it requires to run. the WoW engine can run on just about any machine with just about any hardware in it, that is part of WoW's success.

Right I meant they are copying the UI a bit too much. And they did so claim to have wow as their influence.
